Suggestions for a first timer
« on: February 07, 2018, 06:52:34 PM »
Hi friends, I am travelling to the states for the first time at the end of May. This will be my first time to your country. I am Flying into L.A then to New Orleans. From New Orleans, I head to Vegas and then fly to San Francisco. From San Francisco I am driving down the coast to Anaheim and spending a week before heading home.

Ive booked a few tours in each place but unfortunately I am only in each place a few days.

If anyone has any suggestions for places to see or even eat( as you know Im a bit of a foodie) Id really appreciate it.

Cheers Ryan

How exciting for you!!  I've been to California many times, but not "native" enough to be much help on "foodie" places!  You will love New Orleans also, at least I do and Vegas is always good for a gamble or two!  Been there many times too, but like California, that was in another life and always on business, except one trip as a girl with my family -- visiting all the National Parks across the country.  Of course, Anaheim has Disney Land, and San Diego has the wonderful zoo.  I think I could quote verbatim the talk at the Alcatraz Island Prison, I've been there so many times.  Always, people I traveled with for business wanted to see that, so I've seen that many times.  I especially liked the Sequoia National Park better than the Redwood area, and NAPA Valley was always nice -- but with all the wildfires in California this past year, I'm not sure what it looks like out there.  They used to host lots of wine tastings (which I liked), but not sure what's available now.

ENJOY YOUR TRIP!!!!

Thankyou , I have booked the city tour in New Orleans and Alcatraz in San Francisco .

I cant wait !!!!  I have waited or should I say wanted to do this for many years, 15 Hours in a plane is daunting , so fingers crossed I can sleep.

Im definitely interested in the wine tasting ( head to top of the list).

With a bit of luck , I win lotto before I head over then I can add to my trip and get to meet a few of you lovely people.

Well, I don't travel much, so don't have much advice.  I haven't been to California in almost 20 years, the only touristy thing we did was go to Disneyland.
When I was a kid we went to California, and my folks did a Napa Valley wine tasting tour.
Hope you enjoy your trip and visit.

One thing I wanted to do in new Orleans was the swamp tour, unfortunately  we ran out of time... if you like that sort of thing it could be exciting!!
We rode the ferry and that was nice and relaxing!

Like others, I haven't been to San Francisco since the last century. (I love saying that! LOL)  My twins were born there, we stayed in the area for 3 years. The first year, however, I was homeless.  I got to know a side of SF that most people don't know.  If you'd like to see a less touristy side of the city, I'd recommend:

Haight-Ashbury area.  This was my introduction to the extreme tolerance that California is known for.  I also learned about how GREAT thrift shops and consignment stores are...nothing like what we have here in the South.  These were actually shops that sold good quality, lightly used merchandise.  Also, you will surely, yea most definitely, encounter a cross-section of people, beliefs and cultures.

The Mercado area. (Market street)  This area is a concentration of open-air markets. There is food, food and MORE delicious food!!  You'll see native culture, from the Spainard and Mexican points of view.

For a bit of reality, that all in America isn't wine and roses....the Tenderloin.  It's only a few streets away from the Mercado area, but it's a totally different world.  Here, you'll see the tired, poor. The wretched, the homeless........and yet......they all have a certain dignity.  Here is where you will also find hope, generosity, kindness, understanding.  The many good sides to humanity.

Golden Gate park.  It is so very beautiful.  You'll find various sub-gardens in this park.  You can hug sequoias, a Japanese themed area, tunnels and green spaces.  I lived here while I was pregnant and homeless.  It was my safe have, my protection and my bit of sanity in a time of craziness in my life.  I was here from the time I was 8 weeks pregnant, until two days before I delivered.  This park saved me.

I only saw Alcatraz from across the bay. For myself, I never could understand the attraction to a place that was there because of the inhumanity of man toward man. If it was going to remain, I always thought it should have been made over into something positive. Even better, let go to return to nature.

I envy you that drive down the Coast Highway!! Be sure to check out Monterrey and Carmel.  They are both beautiful!!  The Napa Valley is golden, and amazing how they've been able to cultivate the vineyards out of a semi-arid valley.

Try not to be disappointed when you see Las Vegas in the daytime.  After all, it (like much of Southern California) was taken from the desert.  If you see it first at night, you'll be SO impressed!  It's eye-catching, flashy, brilliant, full of noise and light.  The casinos are easy to get lost in. I mean that on a metaphysical level. No clocks, no windows, a clinging, clanging, hodgepodge that will cause you to lose track of time.  Not to mention the buffets. OMG!! Every type of cuisine one could desire!  During the day, however, you see the concrete, and dust and tiredness.  So, again, just try not to feel disappointed. My brother lives there, so I can ask him if there's anything or any place he'd particularly recommend, if you'd like.

Can't help you with New Orleans though. Sorry. :-)

Such a good holiday , Loved everywhere I went. Vegas was an eye opener & out of this world. Weather was brilliant. Really loved New Orleans. Tried Alligator for the first time and very much enjoyed it. Did some serious damage to the Credit card shopping up a storm.

Hired a car ( Camaro Convertible) to drive from San Fransisco to Anaheim and then onto Santa Monica ,ended up having to change the car to  pick up truck as we couldnt fit all the bags into it hahaha.

So now Ill try and start saving so I can plan another trip to see some more of America.
