Grapes and ponies...
« on: June 25, 2019, 03:57:39 PM »
I had some grapes in the fridge getting a little old, but still sweet; so thought I'd try them on the minis.  Out of 15 equines, only 3 would even sample them, and only two liked them; the rest turned away upon first smell.   Bonny sampled, and I thought she was interested, but she walked away.  Both Dolly and Belle went nuts for a little bit of grapes; had a mix of white and red (the red were sweeter in this batch).
I've tried other fruits and veggies in the past, nothing really trips their trigger in the way of fruits and veggies; but, there are a few commercial treats that they flip for.

Do you know Ive never tried grapes. I have tried a lot of things as snacks , especially when I was trying to find an alternative for the standard apples and carrots. Pumpkin was a winner for some and not for others. The reason I liked it was low in sugar and gave an amazing coat shine.

Ill remember to try them later in the year  :)

Watermelon was always a favorite here in Florida.  I know many who feed their horses and cows the melons from the fields that go unpicked and start to rot.  I wasn't a treat feeder, except for some flax seed treats the horses all liked so I used sparingly.  With 45 horses it could get expensive for treats.  ~~Diane

I don't treat excessively, I buy some commercial treats and use them at farrier time and sometimes for catching.  I only try people food treats if I have extras, they don't seem to be fans anyway.

Same with one mare I have , I have to bribe her with a treat at farrier time , otherwise I dont use excessively at all. At one stage I was a sucker for treats.

Anyone ever make their own treats ?

I've googled recipes, but to be honest... Just to lazy to bother when there are so many choices for commercial treats already made.   ;D

I haven't tried either.  Guess I'm too lazy to even make dog treats for only 1 dog.

Have you made them Ryan?
