Looking up horses
« on: March 03, 2017, 04:03:39 PM »
How do y'all look up a horses bloodlines other then the ones showed on the registration papers? I found one place I could do it but anyone could add a horse and say it had certain sites/dams. So that makes me wonder a bit. I just like exploring who mine are related to and and seeing pictures. Thank you!

You need to pay to subscribe to the studbook for each registry to look up horses and their pedigrees.
I've not done enough myself to warrant paying for my own subscription, but often if you ask, you'll find someone that does have a subscription and is willing to help out.   I've been lucky, so far, and my inquiries have found someone willing.  I have one friend with AMHA subscription and another with a subscription to AMHR.
And, there are people out there that will do pedigree searches for a nominal fee, I have no idea where you find them, as I've never retained the information when it's crossed my path.

Elizabeth, I have access to both the AMHA and AMHR studbooks, as I do a lot of pedigree research for people, and also have a good collection of horse pictures to go with the research (I'm also always looking for more pictures if someone wants to share) and would be more than happy to do the research for you if you'd like, and I also do picture pedigrees for people.

I'll be posting a few FIPA pedigrees here for Holly, as after doing some research I found she has some Falabella Blends that are being registered in FIPA (Falabella International Preservation Association) a group I'm President of internationally, to preserve this special breed of horses.  Those will give you an idea of the pedigree's I do and I'll post a few "general" ones so you can see the difference.  But I can also just provide you with a copy of the pedigrees from the studbooks of either registry.

I have both, because usually combining both in a search is more productive, since several times you'll find that somebody's parent was registered in say AMHR, so the AMHA just shows the parent as "unregistered".  But I can combine both together, and keep the pedigree going back additional generations.

Anyway, I'm happy to look up horses for you. And you, too, Chanda!

Thank you, both. Diane, that would be wonderful if it was possible to get that information. But if it is too much right now, that is fine too. I'm just curious.

Holly,

Here are the 2 Pedigrees from FIPA on Precious and A Patch E Shadow.  I'm going to do the others, and then send them all in one USPS envelope so it can be tracked.

Elizabeth,

This is basically the format I use for American Miniatures pedigrees too.  I also have a format that does not include the FIPA information, but if I find a horse that is a Falabella Blend, I can register it into FIPA's Registry.

Hope you enjoy, Holly.  I'll do a final proof and make corrections (as I see a line and title that's slightly out of place and a couple of other things, but I'm at work so can't fix now and is driving me crazy, but I'll get it corrected before I send them to you.

I am confused, it has her listed as a chestnut Appaloosa? What I have says she's a black Appaloosa, she was born solid black then varnish.
Thank you so much for this!!!

I've made the change Holly.  Trouble is, somewhere the pedigree colors are wrong in the registries -- and we all know how wrong they can be over the past generations, because 2 chestnut horses can't produce a black horse.  But I've fixed it to black before I print it out.   ;D

Bet there was a silver somewhere in the mix, so one of the chestnut parents was probably actually a silver bay;  she didn't inherit the silver gene or agouti, so is black.

No problem, and yes, Chanda, we know there are so many mistakes in the Registries where color is concerned.

I've made the correction on the pedigrees, and will be finishing the others up over the weekend for you, and when I mail them to you, I'll PM you.

I did post an interesting appaloosa genetics question on the throwing appaloosa spots thread (in reference materials), you might find enjoyable.

I dont mind filling in more information, or starting new pedigrees for the horses that arent on there, just hit me up.
