Title: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on June 02, 2016, 07:49:35 PM
Will try to get new pictures soon, I'm finishing up 3 quilts, one is a birthday gift for my sister.  No picture of my sister's quilt, yet, hopefully soon.

Finishing up the horse quilt and kitty quilt.  Working on a patriotic quilt.
Pics during work of these two, will try to get finished ones soon.  [Will try to remember to take my camera to guild on Monday where maybe someone can help me take a picture or I can lay it on a table there or something.

This one is in the works, the patriotic quilt, I have most of the pieces cut and have ordered two more fabrics to fill in.
[Trying out a couple fabrics from my stash, will probably use one for binding or maybe a border, we'll see when I get that far.]

Looks like these two fabrics will be the start of a quilt for Diane's new grand baby coming in the fall; will need to pick a couple more to go with.

I like that horses quilt.  I may have to check to see what the 10 year old adopted "brother" may like, when I get the new grandson one in the fall.  I think it would be nice to give one to him too, to let him know how important he is to me, as well as the new grandson.  This poor boy has had a really rough life, and I want him to know how much we all love him, too.

So, I'll be watching!!

And, I've made and sold all these little mug rugs (been selling them on a FB page for people who buy and sell crystals and stones and such, so also selling them as mini grid mats).

We can certainly do up a kid sized lap quilt for "brother" come fall, find out what he likes and we'll make it special for him.

Thank you.

The butterflies in the elephant fabrics are purple and pink and orange I think, but will have to take a closer look and see what may go to add a splash of color.

And, these quilts are finished and available, anytime.

The stripe quilt was made with fabrics I got from a FB group.
The pink one is Quest for a Cure fabrics from Northcott fabrics, their Stonehenge line of pinks.
And, the red, black and white floral.

I'm going to leave you with these for awhile, as I'm going to watch a 1/2 hour show, then go do chore and then watch my other half-hour show.   Then, supper.

You are very talented Chanda :)

Thank you very much.
I'm better at piecing the tops than I am at the actual quilting part, but I'll stick with doing it myself in plain jane fashion over paying someone else to do, I like that my quilts are mine from start to finish.  [I've only ever had one quilted by someone else, and it was early on in my sewing and bigger than I usually make.]

Well I may need one made towards the end of the year but promise to give you plenty of notice.

My sister and her partner have been talking about planning a baby towards the end of the year, which will make me the proudest uncle going around and will probably bring me to tears lol

I know the postage will be expensive but Im not fussed about that :)

And I can swear, you will not be disappointed!!  I can't even remember how many I've gotten, and I love each one!

And this sounds like exciting news, Ryan!  Can't wait for any updates you learn about!   ;)

Well, a baby quilt will help a little in the postage department as it'll be smaller, so can go in a smaller package for shipping.
I'm about done quilting for the season, and will start up again in probably September.  Will be doing a little piecing, but no more quilting til fall.

I don't have any of these quilt nor fabrics any longer, but here are a few baby quilt samples, 2 of the 3 went to my sister (I think one was for one of her kids and one for a friend of her).

I think there was one more that started it off. One you were making that I got for my mom that was all her favorite colors, and she still uses in her chair. And you sent a small mug quilt with it.

All I know it that each one was an immediate "hit" with each child who received one of the special ones you have shown! And each parent of each child was just as impressed!

What are her favorite colors, perhaps I can then remember then quilt.   I'm guessing I don't recall it, as it was one I had already done and it would work for you; rather than one specially made for you.

This is one I made for my sister like 6 years ago, I didn't even remember making, didn't have a picture of it, and their FB pictures only showed the backside of it.  I remember the fabrics, but don't remember making this particular quilt.   :P

[Edited to add: now I think I'm remembering it a little bit, and it was a project for quilt guild, but that's as much as I remember.]

WOW!  That is going to be soooooo cute!!  And I'm so happy for my son!  I've never seen him so excited about anything in his life.  He was the last of my "herd" (children) to finally find the love of his life, and since the ultrasound telling him he had a son coming, he can hardly contain his excitement!  He was getting concerned that by the time he had married and started having children, the other "cousins" would be too old to play with his little one!  Not so!!  I think all the little "cousins" are as excited as he is to be getting a new little one!!

Goodness knows, this grandma is!!

I'll have to make a "visit" to their home, and see what I can see.  I didn't want to talk with Ben about what he thinks Chase might like, since I didn't want to give "it" away, but I'll find out for sure!

Not quilting and also not horses, well maybe slightly quilty...

Mowed the lawn today, moved panels for the horses, did the dishes, made fruit salad for tomorrow evenings Quilt Guild spring salad bar meeting (just food, show n tell and good fun, last meeting of the season), and then made blueberry muffins with the left over blueberries I bought for the fruit salad (so slightly short for muffins).
I have 3 quilts for show n tell tomorrow, will try to remember to take my camera with me and get pics, if I forget, I'll try to find a not so hairy spot at home to get pictures.

I had a busy day too yesterday as it was Matteo's 17th birthday plus my parents arrived for a weeks holiday. It didn't help that I went away to the beach with my girlfriends all weekend. lol It was a bit crazy when I got back trying to get everything ready, and my hangover didn't help at all.  ;D

Hey, Diane, I have this cute Zebra print, if it might work for the older brother to be's quilt.  Perhaps add some primary colored fabrics or jeweltone fabrics and make up a pattern.   Just a thought.  I know you are sleuthing to discover his likes.

I'll save enough for a good size lap quilt; as it's a bolt, I have plenty to sell some, and save some for a quilt.  I couldn't resist it when I saw it, even though, I didn't know if I'd use any myself.    I'll be geared up to start new quilts in like early September, so start sleuthing, so I can hunt up appropriate fabrics for the big boy quilt.  Already, have the elephant for the baby quilt, and I'm on the hunt for fabrics to go with (have two, and my sales rep has her eye out for the other two I want in something less than a 15 yard bolt).

Thank you.  I'm probably going to make a simple strip quilt at least to start.  Never know what pattern you'll end up, as it depends on the number of fabrics used.

Here's the last one I made, I think it had 5 or 6 fabrics in it, but I'm not certain.
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on June 23, 2016, 12:55:11 AM
here's one that I made with a Jelly roll (pre-cut strips), and I think it had like 30 different fabrics in it (same print, different colors).

OOO, nice!  Those are colors that I like (the jewel tones) and that quilt will be beautiful!

The other strip quilts...  not really anything there does anything for me.  What are the length wise ones like to sew?  I've never  made anything from precut fabric, so I'm really curious.  The hardest part of quilt making for me is the cutting.
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on June 23, 2016, 10:17:39 AM
For the quicky strip quilt, you sew 40 strips end to end, cut 18" off one end, then start folding it back on itself.   Look up strip race quilt for better instructions and even a video demo

Working on a concept for a friend.  I made up a sample of the blender fabrics in her colors, and her butterfly fabric finally came in, so I laid the little sample block over the butterfly print, and I think it'll work together.   I think I'm going to make a slightly smaller strip quilt (like the one Diane claimed) and add a butterfly border and I think she'll have what she wants.
The strips are purple, fuschia (pink), aqua, teal, and 3 shades of blue.  I think it's going to work, at least it looks pretty good in the picture.

I wasn't sure when I ordered them, but I think they just might work in the right quilt pattern, also have a zebra stripes print on order, but that might be too much, but should be enough there for a backing, if it is too much for the top.
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on June 30, 2016, 03:39:26 PM
No picture at this time, but also have another horse quilt sort of planned, in as much as I have the fabric.   The fabric is Laurel Burch print plus some coordinates, just have to figure out a pattern that'll work with the jewel tone horse print and coordinating fabric.

I need to add borders to make the quilt big enough for the requirements for the project, but the charity Patriotic quilt is getting close, I've finished the center of the top.   I rather like it.

Yes.  I'm interested to see what kind of pattern you come up with.  The prints next to the zebra pattern now look a bit busy, I'm thinking. Maybe the stripes you're talking about might be better?  But, I'm not the designer, and I'm always happy with what you come up with!!

I have enough fabric to play around a little bit.   It was hard to see the size of the print in the pictures, we'll just have to see what happens.   The zebra will be here next week, and I have til fall to figure it out.

Out of curiosity I checked UPS tracking and surprise, surprise my package is arriving a day early...
A small shipment of fabric, that includes:  some zebra print to try with the zebra fabric, some cute hearts on blue (two different shades, thought one might work the elephant fabric, if not, it's pretty darn cute), some snowflake print with gold trim, a cat print, and a blue butterfly print.   Oops, almost forgot, there is a Horse panel print in there too.  Might be something else in there too, but I can't remember at the moment.   Just happy UPS is coming early.

Think I have the right fabrics to start this quilt.   Made up a few sample blocks with the fabric I bought hoping it would go, then laid them out with the focus fabric.   Not sure I like the floral print, but the color is right, so probably will go with it anyway.
We are experiencing thunderstorms, so not much I can do outside, so might do a little sewing while the power is one, we've had at least one power outage a day with this storm system.

It's only been 5-6 weeks, since I last posted here.  Time got away from me, and I need to finish up a patriotic quilt for guild by the 5th, so I sewed my blocks together on the Laurel Burch top (will need to add borders before it's ready for quilting), so I could fold it up and set it aside to finish up the patriotic quilt.  The patriotic quilt needs the borders added to make it big enough, then quilting and binding before the 5th.  I can do it.
[After it's done, I'll start the first of 4 commissioned quilts before getting back to the Laurel Burch. Might even have one done by October quilt meeting to show off, they will all be done in time for Christmas.]

Quilt Guild has a late night quilting day the last Friday of the month (tomorrow), 3pm til pooped out; so I'm taking the patriotic quilt in tomorrow and I'm going to pin it together for quilting on their tables, rather than use a bed (stooping over the bed is uncomfortable, and the tables just work out better).  Also have an appointment for an overdue oil change and will get a few groceries.  I won't be staying late, just a little longer than I need to pin my quilt.   Once it's done I can get started on the commissioned quilts, can't wait.   [Still waiting on some fabric for one, but the others I should have all my fabric, just have to plan patterns and sizes.]

The elephant fabric stays, but trying out an eclectic selection of fabrics to work with the pattern.  I think it looks pretty good with the variety used, and at the moment, nothing screams "not me".
Title: Re: Quilts...

Was able to take the patriotic top to town yesterday, and join the girls at the center for Friday quilting and got it pinned together and ready for quilting.  Doing that work on a couple tables shoved together is so much easier than on top of the bed.   So, it's ready to quilt, and I'll be off and running on those commissioned quilts in no time.

Nothing screams "not me" either, but unfortunately, the father hates purple/fuscia.  Perhaps something else?  The baby's room is blue and white, with some shades of grey.  Kind of "beachy" sounding to me, but haven't seen it yet.

I really like the colors, but my boys -- all of them -- are so particular about "girly" colors like pink, purple, fuscia, etc.  So silly, especially when the "baby" boys play with dolls.  Nearly makes them cringe!  LOL

LOL

While there is purple in the elephant print, it's a tiny amount, so I'll see what I can do to find a different color to replace the purple.  I see about what I have in shades of aqua, that would be beachy.   No problem.

I pulled these out of the cupboard, what would be your pick.   I rather like the stripe, although I'm not sure if it fits the quilt, it is from a "beach" collection (can't remember the actual name, but it had beach in the name).  Then, middle left or top right for my picks.

Well, "Ribbons" will be coming to NC as a gift for a very dear friend.

Her mother is in final stages of colon & liver cancer. My friend is in KY saying goodbye now. :-(  I'm hoping that this quilt will absorb all the aches of her spirit and give her a bit of peace.  Any prayers that you include with it will be greatly appreciated!! Particularly since she herself has only been in remission from breast cancer since January of 2013.

Oh how lovely.  What a wonderful gift!  And you won't be disappointed in how beautiful the quilt is.  I have several that I've purchased for grandchildren, and now starting to work on the children!  LOL

I like the stripe, too, Chanda! VERY nice!

I might pull the navy as well, it's so dark.  But, I'll pull the purple and insert a replacement, check it out and decide if the navy needs to go too (it's kind of dark,  but there is navy in the elephant print, it's just a small amount).    I'll try out the stripe (it might be too busy) and I think the top right will be the right choice).
[I have another baby quilt to make, so will use the extra cuts and make another similar, but smaller quilt.]

I replaced just the purple in one pic, and both the purple and dark blue (used that stripe, it has blue in it, but not so harsh) in the other.

No picture yet of Diane's quilt, but I did finish the top.

Took the extra pieces and I'm making a smaller quilt with the purple and blue.  A neighbor requested a baby quilt earlier this summer when I wasn't quilting and had nothing made, so we'll see if they'll like this little one, or maybe one of the printed pre-quilted panel quilts that I have a couple already with binding on.  [Need to swap a couple pieces around before a sew, but otherwise, I think it'll work.]

Next batch of fabrics, the blue top right might be a little dark to have good contrast with the grey; but I might still use it.  Might need to pull a tan fabric to use as background for that fabric.

Didn't have to search too far, I found a beige blender that should work for background for the blue fabrics (and the grey will be background for the beige/brown prints).

Found another blue and beige in my stash to add.  The blue is a tone on tone with stars, and the beige has a scroll like print in it.   Should make for enough variety and interest.

Ok, so I need another blue to make one more set of blue/beige blocks or the color balance will be off.  Not sure if I'll just use more of the blue star fabric or find another blue to add.
These are just the base blocks, they aren't done yet, but getting too late to cut and sew more without making mistakes.

7 blocks complete, only 13 more to go.
One is laid the wrong direction in the picture, but here are the first 7 blocks, somewhat as they'll be in the quilt.

I sell quilting supplies too.  I was on eBay, but prices went up and sales went down, so I've moved to FB, if you'd like to check out my fabric page, let me know, and I'll get you a link (or you can PM me your name, so I can add you with your permission; it's a closed page for now).
That foal blanket is adorable.  I never got the hang of sewing other things; tried clothing hated it and haven't had much luck sewing foal blankets ( the Velcro gets me in trouble).

We had a Baby Shower for the little one coming in November!  The whole family is getting very excited!!  And this Grandma can't wait!  Since my son Ben, the daddy-to-be is an identical twin, I'm dying to see if this little boy looks like his brother Jon's son.  We know there will be differences because of the mommies, but he's getting the same DNA on daddy's side.  Ought to be fun to see!

Sorry grandma didn't have her main gift for the shower, but hopefully Christmas works for grandma; we can do that.
It's amazing how alike siblings and/or cousins can look.  [And, equally amazing how different.  Shayne's brother looks more like his uncle than brother or dad.]

Ryan,
Here's the baby quilt I did for our post mistress, she did have a boy, but would have worked for a girl, too, since it's all primary colors.  Bright and cheery.  [She loved it.]  Thought I had a finished pic, but it's almost finished here, just had to bind it, I think.  [I put the blue binding on it (not the orange).]

Thank you.   Should be ready close to actual baby time.  The top is done, but I'm working on the blue/grey/tan, so it'll be ready about the same time.  I've done some sewing today, and have another 6 or 7 blocks done, so 6 or 7 to go; I'll have a couple extras.   So far, I really like the blue/grey/tan quilt; in addition to the cat and dog silhouette prints, I have aviator prints that are so cool, they fit the colors.   I may have a picture of the finished blocks laid out by tomorrow afternoon, if I get the chance to do some more sewing.

Ryan,
do you think she'd like a juvenile cowboy print?  I found a really cute print in my cupboard, it has a blue background, but I think with the right colors it could be less boyish.  I also have a pastel heart print.  And, a cute kitty print.  I can get you a picture to see if any interest you.  And, we can always go a completely different way.  I was just looking to see what I have.  And, by the time I'm done with my already started commissioned quilts, my supplier may have a new super cute kiddie print that would be perfect.

Yes, I think I need to find a softer yellow than the one I have (on the right of the picture).  I think I found a red, if it goes, but I like the print.  I'll look for a different yellow, a softer one (I sold out of all my soft yellows, so time to replenish stock).

I hope it's loved to death, and the next generation needs a new one.  Only the pictures of it being loved are passed on.

I can get these two prints in yellow, just checking if I can get them in the size I want (I can get pre-cuts when available or whole bolts); the yellow is nice and soft:

I'm trying to get the prints, but might end up with plain blender as the prints are currently out of stock.  I was leaning towards the swirly one, but will let my sale rep know, the butterfly is preferred; so to look for that one (they are having an open house this weekend, so lots of fabric will move through the doors).

They are doing their open house, Sunday.  She's holding the two pieces for me now, and we'll check to see if they do more pre-cuts for the open house.   I'd like to have the butterfly if I can, even for the backing, so there is a bit more "texture" in the quilt.

Been running all day the last several days, we're harvesting wheat, so busy.  If weather holds and there are no more breakdowns, we could probably be done in about a week; but the next 3 days are 100% precip predictions, so might take a bit longer to get done.

I'll hopefully be able to get back to sewing fairly soon, but don't hold your breath.
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on September 22, 2016, 02:08:59 PM
Finished the top, and if this rain continues and keeps us from harvesting, I hope to go to town tomorrow for the sewing day and get the layers pinned together on this quilt and the elephant quilt, so I'm ready for quilting when I get the chance to start on that.
So, Diane, here is your blue, grey, tan top, what you think?   And, how do you feel about flannel for the back?  I have some grey and some tan flannel, just plain, no print; would make it cozy.
And, I'm pretty sure I'll use the blue star print for the binding, since I still have some and it should be plenty for the binding (and it seems to go really well with the grey and tan background fabric).

Oh, that sounds exciting.  Never to early to plan for next Christmas season!!

Well, my little Ryan is trying to make his entrance a bit too early!!  We expect when he arrives he will be heading to the NICU, but of course, all of mine made early appearances and were "NICU" babies, so we're all prepared for what comes next.

I've been at the hospital most of the day, and just came home for clothes and a quick nap.  Then, back an hour to the hospital, and we'll wait it out some more.

Can't wait to see those fabrics, Chanda!!

Working on deciding on a pattern for the blue and zebra quilt.  I think they'll work.  When I'm taking pictures, I'll try to get a picture of the blue, zebra and black fabrics.

Found a pattern, my zebra fabric is different and I would be using blue instead of browns, but here is one that I like:

Thank you.

Put together my first block, well, almost, short fabric with my test strips, so almost have my first block, but you can kind of see what we have going on.   Will make as many of the blue blocks as I can, and see how much zebra I need to cut to fill in to make the size needed.  I think I'll use the zebra stripe print for the backing, as the coloring is a bit different from the zebra print.  [And, the grey doesn't go and isn't really needed, so pulled it.]

Made a few cutting mistakes or there would be another block in there, but here are the first several blocks laid out with the zebra.  I can make bigger zebra pieces, if you'd like; but think every other placement works pretty good.   The blue is fabulous, if you ask me.

We went to supper tonight, so no sewing this evening.   I'll get to work tomorrow, since it's snowing right now, there will be no harvesting tomorrow; I'll just feed then come in and sew a bit.
Hope Matthew doesn't slow down your package shipment, but it's on it's way.  Two happy boys in the near future; ok so one happy boy with a new quilt and some happy parents with a baby quilt for a new baby.

7 blocks completed, at least that many more to make, depending on how big I make the quilt.  It'll be about the same size as that stripey quilt you picked up, so that both are similar in size, and I'll be making a pillowcase to go with (like the other one has).  We're on a roll, but I should have done more today.

Ended up going to town with Shayne today to get more t-posts, then clipping wire on posts on the fall pasture on the way home (he still have more to clip).  So, that means no sewing today, perhaps tomorrow, it's supposed to snow, so would be a good day for it.

Did a little sewing yesterday, but then needed to help Shayne, so didn't get much done.
Today, I haven't started,  yet, but hope to get a little more done.

Chanda -

for the quilting challenged, can you post some links to block patterns?  Even a sampler type quilt would be cool.  I prefer doing 2 color type (at least that's what I'm looking at right now) in larger blocks (for now) and I'm having troubles.  I've found pics but no sizes...  Maybe sizes are what I need - have an extensive file with 4 & 9 patch pictures, just don't have a clue how to size the pieces to make a block.  Lately, it seems like all the sewing places are only teaching/selling the intricate block patterns making an even more intricate quilt (beautiful, but totally DAUNTING for a beginner).

I'd really like to make a quilt at some point this winter - maybe start with a lap quilt so that I can get it done!!  Bigger pieces mean less handling and faster piecing.  I hadn't gotten to the point of foundation or paper piecing.

I've actually just downloaded several PDFs on quilting (one is a book w/ patterns) but don't have time to really look at them right now...  Even a book/PDFs of SIZES to cut the peices to make 4 & 9 piece blocks...

Also, what I'm looking at is using what's left of mine and my hubbies OLDER uniforms (Army - mid 80s to mid 90s) and some others I'd gotten.  The fabric is not all 100% cotton and most is a bit heavier in weight.  Need to find a source for tan, green, brown for sashing and the 2nd color in the blocks, etc.  Mostly want solid, but could do small patterns like I've seen some of yours in...  Can't do supper expensive cuts like they do sell here at the main fabric stores - unless that's all there is OR that is really what is recommended as the "counter" to what I have.

If needed/wanted, I could send you some swatches?  I've done some quilting in the past (no pics  :(  ) w/ uniforms, and used cotton sheets from Wal-Mart.  Last sheets I bought though, weren't heavy enough (maybe not large enough thread count)...  Pretty - had a nice little 9 block hanging quilt with a cross stitched "Home is where the Army sends you" in the center.  Some of the blocks were appliqued, some pieced and a friend and I took them to the Holiday craft fairs here.  Lost our patterns (& material, finished hanging quilts, 2 sewing machines and a serger) when our storage unit was broken into and "stolen" years ago when we were out of state.  Have never replaced all of that...

I'll try to get you some links when I'm on the computer, later; I don't know how to on my kindle.
A good basic book is "Your First Quilt Book, or it Should be" by Carol Doak.  It's the first book I bought, and has all the basics in it.  I still sometimes refer to if I'm stuck.
If you have a JoAnn's near you, they'd have some more reasonable priced fabrics.  Just check the quality, feel, of the fabric, as they do have some thin stuff.  We can discuss swatches, if you'd like.

What's black and white and blue all over?
A zebra quilt with blue accents, that's what, and it's getting there.  I have blocks sewn into 6 rows, and will be sewing those together shortly, then adding a border and the top will be done.  Hopefully, the stars and planets will align and I can go to Friday Night quilting in town and get the layers pinned together so I can quilt it.  Picture when I'm done with the top, maybe later today.

Just ordered and I'm going to try a different batting in the middle of my next few quilts.  I really like the batting I've been using, but it's more expensive and comes in rather large lots when I order from my supplier.  So, I'm going to try this other brand that has similar qualities, but it comes in half-sized lots compared to the other brand, so easier to order and store.  Also, ordered a blend that is fluffier to try.  So, we'll see how it goes when I make up these next few quilts.  [Zebra quilt will get my usual batting, as I have it here, and I'm working on it a bit now.

Chanda!!!!

I found a really cool YouTube channel in the Missouri Quilting Company.  She generally uses Moda and the Jelly Rolls or Charm Squares in different sizes (I will have to cut my own - cutting is what has always taken me so much time).  But then she shows how to do different squares and patterns - w/o lots of extra cutting & no pinning.  WOW, so cool.

REALLY like the Jacobs Ladder quilt - she shows it in a shade on shade pattern from Moda and then a 2 tone (red/white).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itUKAJ6RaOc

I think I've finally found what I was looking for in beginner easy.  No to get all my stuff actually unpacked and set up so that maybe I can do this.

I like the Serendipity quilt, too, but that's just way to busy for me.  I'd have to do more of the same color - to many fabric patterns in her demo.

Watching some more now while I drink 2nd cup of coffee before chores...

Hi everybody!!!  Chanda, I really like that blue striped one! I'm heading over to the other quilting thread.....just to take a peek, mind you.....

I very much love the IDEA of quilts and quilting. Space (actually the lack thereof) limits the things we can do here. Even when we have the big trailer ready, it will still be space-crunched. Are there any suggestions for beginners who lack space??
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on October 27, 2016, 11:33:32 PM
I make smaller quilts, partially due to limited space, and partially due to lack of patience.

Store your supplies in water proof bags in water/animal proof bins/tubs and store somewhere on your property.  When you have the time to quilt, pull it out.  probably if you go smaller like what Chanda mentions, that means fewer pieces - to cut, to piece and to have in your lap.  The cut pieces take up much less room - you could hang the bag of cut pieces up somewhere (or scrunch it down?)  You can do the cutting, planning & piecing all separately.  I did that with the small wall hangings I did - not just because of space but time issues with the three girls - from 1992 thru 1995.  I've never gotten back into it since the loss of our "stuff" (not sure u kno that story?) - but want to now...  Working on that.

*** we will finally be working on the floor in the "fireplace room" (back door/door we use entrance) this weekend.  After that, I'm hoping to set up the "library"/craft area...  Crossing my fingers I get to start pulling out material/supplies/sewing machine this winter my ownself.  ******

Can't wait to hear more about what's going on Julie. Would love to arrange a time to come visit.

Seeing that quilting looks like it involves math is what keeps me from even trying. I don't want my head to explode from the frustration of starting something and then not finishing. Can quilting be done without math??  ;pray

Julie, I think if you find the right pattern and or book, you can do basic quilting with minimal math.  There aren't a lot of patterns in it, but the book "Your First Quilt Book or it Should Be" by Carol Doak, is a really good beginners quilting book.  Has a couple basic quilts in, the math is all done for you, lots of good beginner basics information in it.    [It was my first good quilt book I bought, wish it had been the very first, then I probably would have passed on buying a couple I did, that I didn't like as well.  I made my second quilt from this book, a lovely little Irish Chain for my mom.]

Hmm, I went back out to the link and not sure where you are seeing graphs?  Is it because of the quilt(s) in the back ground that might look like graphs?  Or maybe the little cutting boards & rulers she uses - that DO have the numbers and lines on them - to cut the fabric?

Is anyone else seeing graphs?

In all actuality, the Jacobs Ladder pattern IS NOT a beginner quilt - when you cut each individual piece the way I started out doing many years ago.  But it is a pattern I've always loved and it can be done in just two colors - the MSQC shows it in a finished quilt that does a lot of pattern shifts due to the color gradations of her fabric AND the demo is done in red and white - just two colors.  I was fascinated by the EASY (or EASIER?) techniques she demo'd  that made it so much faster to do.  Putting the pre-cut strips together first, then cutting those to make the squares.  Then putting those two color squares together with the next one and it makes a larger 4 patch square.

One of her other videos shows how to do a "string block".  I always thought that meant they were using string or something, I don't know.  It is actually a way to make many types of blocks with different materials (patterns) - by piecing on paper.  I still didn't understand that - until watching her video not once but a couple of times before the "AH HA" lite went on.  W/O cutting fabric into little pieces (you do need at least one proper straight edge on the piece and preferably 1 on each side), she shows how to use the pieces to make a block in a design and then again cuts that block from 1 corner to the other & then another corner to the other - making striped triangles that can then be made into different designs.  It was/is fascinating...

I can't find the paper pieced one - will look for it later, gotta go!

818pm - AH - found it!!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ02NM9-USw

I think this is the one, though I thought I watched one made with Xmas fabric - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05OwI46u1oY

The one is shown with striped fabric - not precut - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8xgM1H2X18

I decided that if half my quilt is made up of Army uniforms that have been taken apart (takes forever, breaks fingernails & seam rippers, lots of blisters) - then maybe for the contrasting colors, investing in precut squares and strips would make it much easier/faster to do a quilt.  I hope to eventually find out.

Part of what I liked about the MSQC's You Tube videos is the fact that she's working with a lot of pre-cut fabric that didn't require doing a lot of measuring - the measurements are built in due to the sizing of the precut fabric (5" & 10" squares, 2.5" strips that are 40-45" long.  Honestly that's where a lot of my own hang up is - so for me - that was a revelation!  Even if I take materiel that I already have (I have a LOT of clothes that I've sat and taken apart) and then cut it into strips or squares like the precuts they sell, then use the techniques that she shows for sewing them (had never heard of putting two 10" squares together, sewing the WHOLE THING all around the edges in a complete square, and then cutting it from one corner to the next and then again from the other corner to the next making 4 separate units that are now triangles that are sewn together and  when opened up and pressed flat are now squares).  Saves time, no measuring or very, very little.  I was fascinated and excited and HOOKED....  I've watched several others of her videos since then and have been looking at/studying the various fabrics...

Hmmmmm

Thanks for sharing, Chanda.  It's been inspirational.  I had some plans this week to do some cleaning in the office and go thru some boxes - but this fever and hacking cough has put the brakes on the project.  I'm barely dragging out to do chores and then I'm thoroughly exhausted.  But then cough doesn't allow good sleep either...   :(

I'm not all that crazy about the combo either, but the frog print pulls it together.  And, for all I know she was talking about grass green, royal blue and chocolate brown; but these are the fabrics I have in my cupboard (green is on order, hope it works), so these are what I'm using.  I love the little frog print.

I love those!  I've been eyeing those two prints.

Where did you order yours from and how much fabric do you typically order from each cut that you purchase?  Just curious...

I actually put fabric on my Amazon Wish List (quite a bit,  ::)  ) and we'll see if any of my family truly checks it out (LOLOLOL).  I'd actually love to get some fabrics for Christmas.

Paula,
I order from wholesalers, mostly for resale, but some for personal use.  I got my Tax ID 14 years ago so I could buy wholesale for resale (I had an eBay store then, closed it in 2014).   [I moved my inventory to FB, started on a couple established fabric sale groups, then started my own group for  my fabric.]
I have these two Christmas horse prints for $6/yard plus s/h.
And, since I'm buying wholesale, each print is usually 5yard to 15 yards (I can get 5 yard cuts from one supplier, otherwise fabric usually comes 15 yard bolts, sometimes a little shorter).

When I want small yardage for personal use only I order from Fabric.com  FabricDepot.com  Connecting threads, and Craftsy.

Question for you quilters. My mom makes a lot of quilts, I am having her help me make two small kid size quilts for my grand babies for Christmas. They are 2&3 yrs old. We are using old denim jeans we have cut into 8 inch squares. The top row is all pockets, so cute!!
My question is, because it's made of denim, it's not soft so I am using a fleece backer. I am not sure if I should add a layer of baton in the middle or not. I am not sure if it would be to heavy.
The quilts are for their beds, and are 5 x 7 approximately.

Holly, often the batting is left out of denim quilts with fleece backing, as the weight of the denim and warmth of the fleece is plenty.  Also the bulk is plenty to work with, whether tying or quilting.

Since, Ryan doesn't need his niece/nephew's quilt for awhile, I'm working on a quilt for a neighbor for their new grandson.  Mother said their colors are blue/green and brown.  At first I didn't think I had any fabric in those colors, then I remembered I had this frog fabric (and a coordinate), so I found a blue in my fabric stash and ordered the green on-line (ordered two actually, and my first choice was the right choice, so now I have an extra green).  Got started on some blocks today; pictured is half the blocks I'm making, then I'll make pieced sashing strips for the right side and bottom to complete the pattern.

I hope so.
They just said blue/green and brown; not sure if these are the shades of blue and green they wanted, but the frog fabric is so cute and has a brown back ground with a blue and a green in it, so we'll try it and see what happens, if not I'll have a froggy quilt available.  :o

Looks like some I'm going 2 b ordering.

I do have a small amount available.   I have 4-6 of the 2-panel pieces (they are already cut, came that way), and a yard or two each of the border stripe and blue tree print (I'm about out of the greyish snowy print, so I'm keeping what I have left for my projects).   When you decide you want some, PM me, as it probably won't get listed on FB.

Debating if I should add borders or not.
Baby quilt.
Without borders it's about 35"x42", with borders it would be about 45"x 55" (I think).

Thank you.
I'm nixing the borders and going with just the blocks.   Partially because I want to be done, and partially because the fabric I want to use for the border only has enough left to do the smaller size.

I never would have picked these colors to go together, but they asked for blue, green and brown (just hope these shades of blue and green will work); and I had the brown frog fabric with the blue and green in it.
I might be done with this tomorrow sometime, and if they are home, I'll take it over and see if they are happy with it.  Hope so.

I think I can come up with something and should have time to make it this winter.   Nice lap size quilt for Diane in pretty bright horse print.  Will see what I can find in brights to go with it.   do you have a favorite color, so perhaps I can pick that to be the main complimentary fabric.
thank you.

And that size sound so perfect.  Just something to cover up with while in the recliner!

I'll see what goes, as I'm not sure forest green is in the bright horse print, but will come up with something using blues and greens as the complimentary colors to the horse print.   TY.

Definitely no neon green, but it might be a grass green, rather than a forest green that compliments the horse print.

I thought I had two layout ideas for you, Ryan, but I don't think I have enough of the heart fabric to do the every other layout (would be one block short, I think).  I added one more fabric, I've sewn 6 of the 12 star blocks (6 completed in the pictures, plus 1 partially sewn - 2 of each color).
[On the stars around layout, there would be stars in the corner too, just don't have those sewn yet.]
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on December 11, 2016, 07:56:03 PM
It's up to you, Ryan, but I'm leaning towards the every other arrangement, and I do have enough heart fabric to do 4x4 layout (that's 4 blocks wide by 4 block tall, it would take 8 heart print blocks, and 8 pieced star blocks).   Might add a border or two to that to make it a hair bigger.

Love them Both Chanda , happy with what ever you decide on :)

I should be able to get back to making blocks in a day or two, then I'll look at it some more and see just how much of the heart fabric I have, and go from there as to which layout, but I really like the every other arrangement.

Post by: Chanda on December 17, 2016, 05:20:51 PM
Darn it, I miss cut one piece of the hearts fabric, so will need to adjust the pattern a little bit, which doesn't look as nice.   On the search for a piece of that fabric, but I'm not going to hold my breath, since it's an older fabric.    I might have to make the stars and heart section smaller then add borders to make the right size.   I'll give it a few days to find a piece of the fabric, then will likely need to adjust my pattern.  [Perhaps 3x3 with borders or 3x4; instead of 4x4.]

Diane,
Colors aren't true green or blue in the horse print, and the "green" is lime or neon like, so here are the fabrics I picked, and the yellow will either be used very lightly or not at all, just depends on the pattern I find.  And, your son won't want it, as it will have purple in it.   ;)

I'll have more orders, I'm sure, over the course of 2017 -- but decided I want this one for me.  I gave the other quilt I had chosen for myself to one of my daughters-in-law who gave me that wonderful "colt", so I'm replacing my "empty chair" for myself!

I'm attaching a new picture of my last "colt" - who will be 3 months old on the 6th.  He's come a long way since his arrival at 4 pounds 6 ounces, and is growing just fine having doubled his birth weight!

I've been quilting somewhere around 15 years, my piecing skills are a bit better than my quilting skills (I still go with basic straight line stitching; as I want them to hold together, be a bit fluffy, and for me the piecing is more important).  Some years I do quite a bit of quilting, other years I don't get anything done.   I'm not exactly sure how I got started, other than there isn't much to do around here in the winter (lots of dark hours to find something to do, and lots of cold).
It's single digits at the moment with a bit of snow falling.

Done with the top per the pattern/directions.
It's 50x58", so similar in size to the red floral you gifted rather than keeping (that was 45x66").  I don't know how I could make it bigger without affecting the look, but could do it, if you really want it bigger.

Still a work in progress, and pattern call for cutting the corners diagonally making it an octagon.

Here's the second one, all sewn together and corners cut to make it an octagon.  It's about 23" across.  The light green fabric next to it, is the likely binding.   Both will be available when finished in a week or so (I have 2 bigger quilts to finish, too).

Need to get a bit more fabric for this one.  it's a guild project charity quilt for local Vietnam veterans.
It's currently only about half as big as it needs to be, and I'm all out of the fabrics I used from my stash.  I've ordered a red/white/blue fabric that says peace and love on it, looking at a blue star print, and I need more white on white.  I was hoping to just use stash fabric, but didn't have enough red, white and blue fabrics to do it.

Then, I have a little tote bag to make for someone, and I have patriotic quilt in the works for the guild Vietnam veterans project we're doing.

Diane, yours arrived in Tampa at 1:57am 2-12, so it might make the Monday delivery prediction.
Ryan, yours is still stuck in our main state sort facility.  [It only shows it arriving at the facility Friday night.  Hope this isn't the start of a long journey with no tracking, although it's supposed to be tracked. Hate it when they don't scan like they are supposed to.]

The patriotic quilt is still sitting on the bed waiting for more sewing, but I started a new quilt tonight anyway.  No pictures, but it's a strip quilt all from one fabric, it's an ombre fabric, so the affect should be interesting.
It's the same pattern as the center this quilt (no border), but all the fabric is from the same bolt:

No two of these quilt will ever look the same, even with the same fabrics, but I think I really like this ombre fabric in this pattern.  It's about 50x64".   Just the top is done, will need to put the layers together, quilt and bind it.

WOW! OMG, OMG, Oh my gosh!!!!  that is fantastic.

I usually do not like the quilts made from strips.  They do nothing for me.  Most are either too busy or the colors "clash" for me.  Must be the color pattern on this one.  I LOVE IT!!  I sent you a pm.  When you respond, can you also send me your mailing addy?

Sent you a message, as I have enough fabric to make another, if interested; color placement will vary a little, as it always does with this pattern.

Quilted, but not a quilt, and I don't know if I'll ever make one again; but someone asked me to make them a little tote bag for a specific purpose, so I gave it a go.
It's about 10"x10" closed, and 10x20" open, one side has an open pocket, the other a flap pocket.

Newest project.  Sewed 80 blocks today.  Made with 5" squares instead of the 10" squares the pattern calls for, so it's 1/4 the size of the pattern.  Have an extra row top and bottom, so may pull them out; but may leave them with the interesting pattern the extra blocks make.

uh oh!  Saw some fabric on a FB quilting group, not for sale but someone using in a quilt, had to have some.  Just saw it tonight, so stole her pictures.
I've ordered the panels and the blue horse.  Not sure if I want the floral on black, I think that might make it too busy.

Need to enlarge a quilt project, so I've been looking for a fabric to use as a border, I may have found it.  I think it goes pretty good, and it's not always easy to work with blues and yellows.

Im not a huge fan of yellows, but that is nice!  I think that flower/butterfly fabric cgoes really well with it, too.

I'm not a huge fan of yellows; but blue and yellow are complementary colors are do go well together.  Glad this floral will work.  It'll probably be fall before I get back to work on this quilt, as I have to square up all 80 of those little triangle blocks and that's going to take quite awhile, so I think I'm going to start something quick, so I can finish up before June quilt meeting.
Title: Re: Quilts...
Post by: Chanda on April 16, 2017, 12:06:55 AM
Put the blue and yellow away for now, as it's a lot of tedious work to do, so started something simple today.
I need to make at least 3 more blocks, maybe more depending on if I decide its a tabletopper or a lap quilt.  The focus fabric is a horoscope print.

Getting  little closer to fall, so I'm starting to think about quilting.  Actually, I started a strip quilt, just to get back in the swing of things.
Also ordered some new fabric and had a previous backorder finally show up.

New fabric is the trio, horse print is the back order.

I'll probably sell most of the yardage, but the farm animal print would make a cute baby or toddler quilt.   I really like the horse print, might have to come up with something for it.
