She's beautiful.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I'll add pictures when she unfolds more, but here are a couple from today.  Probably barely an hour old.
She's already more up on her hooves and legs then when I took the pics.

I am such a great fan of those long legs!!  Just lovely!!

You get longer legs when you like them taller.   both Bonny and Tana are right at 38" tall.

My "Spotty" always put those wonderful long legs on his foals, and their bodies were always "divisible" by three! But he was 34", and the foals stayed below 34" at maturity.  That was one of the things that made me the happiest, as mine were less than the 34" for the AMHA, but had those long legs going on!

Thank you for the compliments everyone.
Loving these two little ones, even if I can't play with them as much as I'd like, it's been raining, so miserable to be out there.  The stalls are a bit small for too much interaction, I don't like to stress them too much.

A few pics today, turned the pairs out with the other mares and out to pasture for a little bit, almost time to bring them in.  They haven't grazed since right before foaling.

Unless I buy a mare, it'll be two years before more, as I prefer to go every other year.    But, hope to have more in the future.

Yes, he does.  I think I want another mare to cross with him, but don't know where I'll find what I want.  When the right one comes up, I'm sure I'll know and I'll find a way to fit her into the budget and talk Shayne into it (he thinks I have plenty, but what does he know of these things).

Well, WE'RE on YOUR SIDE!!  That Topper throws such fabulous little ones, I can't wait until you find that "special" mare you're looking for!!

You should tell us what you're looking for, and maybe "we" can help find a special girl for you!

Still looking for that illusive dark buckskin, no silver; but now that I have little Bliss, I might settle for a different color with pinto pattern.   I no longer have a black pinto, so that would work.   If I could have it all; I'd take a dark rich buckskin pinto mare.   Must be AMHR, and 36-38" tall; I've started looking at Shetlands a little bit if I can find something already AMHR registered (there seem to be a few more of those rich dark buckskins in Shetlands).

You needed some of the dbl registered AMHR/ASPC ponies from Wa-Full Farm (NE) or the IA ones that have gone out of business in the last few years...

I don't know enough about the AMHR horses to help with finding a mare for you, but I'll sure keep my "eyes" open...

They certainly don't understand that.  And, I lost my black and white a couple years ago, so I'm short at least one color in the herd.

Gotta get that cream gene in the mix!!

Gotta get that cream gene in the mix!!

Yep, gotta have cream for buckskin.
I'm down to two cream mares, both double cream, and one won't be bred (Topper is too big and che` is her daddy; but Shayne said a few years ago that she had to stay).    And, I have more silver in my herd than I realized, mostly on the mare side for breeding.    Mares: silver bay dun, silver smoky cream, silver black, sorrel, chestnut, cremello (may have silver, her daddy is silver buckskin).  Stallions: dark bay and silver buckskin.   [And, then the geldings: bay, silver smoky black and grullo.  Oh, and new babies, dark bay appy and silver buckskin filly.]

Oh, and waiting for details from a friend about some mares with foals that a friend of hers is selling, just don't know how long that will take.  But, I may be asking for forgiveness, if one suits my needs/wants.  [Even though I have two beautiful babies, I think with euthanizing two this spring, I deserve a little addition to my herd, if the right mare is available.]

Title: Re: New filly for Chanda!!
Post by: dcwolcott on June 10, 2016, 12:58:14 PM
Make sure they are really "A" sized.  Many people keep their "A" papers for breeding mares to smaller stallions, for their mare that are REALLY OVER 34"

Crossing my fingers and praying for you!   ;pray
Title: Re: New filly for Chanda!!
Post by: Chanda on June 10, 2016, 03:08:58 PM
Well, I told her if anything was close to 34" to let me know, as that wouldn't be too small for Topper at 35.75".  2" wouldn't scare me too much.
Title: Re: New filly for Chanda!!
Post by: dcwolcott on June 10, 2016, 08:47:38 PM
No, that's a quite acceptable difference.  He's not a bulky stallion, he's quite well put together and not the heavy boned style!
Title: Re: New filly for Chanda!!

Took a few pictures this morning, but they weren't overly cooperative, so got lots of dark shadowed pictures.   Better ones of Spotty and they are posted to his thread, he's not as shy as Bliss.
Maybe it's just me, and in this picture they are standing on a slope, but I'm pretty sure Spotty is a couple inches taller than Bliss.

It's so funny how they are different.

I didn't see "Kreature" as a "new foal" - he was about 3 months old when we bought Bell w/ him at her side and his coloration was sooo different...

Before his bath, the 22nd of Sept (day after arriving at home from IA) -

After his bath, wet -

In March 2010 (about 9 months old) -

He was body clipped in 8-10 April, then this taken 27 April - 2010 -

Mature pic, not quite shed off completely - at 5.5 yrs old -

I know that I put "palomino" on his original registration application BEFORE having his dam color tested.  Then it was driving me crazy and when he was gelded, before we sent in the certificate for his castration to update his papers, I had both he and his dam color tested, even though we'd already sold him.  Turns out his sire carries at least one bay gene (he's a cremello - but not tested) - Bell is heterozygous black, homozygous silver - and Kreature carries 1 gene for each color, LOL...  EeAaCRnZn.  So now we officially know he is a silver buckskin, LOL.

Wish I had pics of Taff when she was a foal.  Pretty sure she is a silver buckskin as well.  She is a Bell's granddaughter.

The picture of him standing with sursingle and lines, he looks remarkably like Tana, but Tana is silver bay dun (no cream, had her tested, as we thought palomino and registered as such as a foal - posted pics of her and a few people said no she's silver bay, but darnedest silver bay coloration I'd ever seen; but add in dun and appy and you get Tana).
Tana tested EE, Aa, no cream (silver and dun proven by her color and grulla colt).
Will also attach a picture of her dorsal, which is quite light.  Combining silver, dun and appy really can change the color.

My guess is silver buckskin, too.

I'll see if I can get a picture or two this afternoon, but as it's been raining and Shayne can't hay this morning, I got his help to trim the babies hooves.  What a rodeo!  Even though I've been picking up their hooves, I haven't started their halter training, so needed his help to hold the babies while I attempted trimming.  I think they might need a bit more, but it was enough stress for each today.
I was pooped after our baby rodeo and trimming Tana, too; so pics later, I hope.

Yes, I've got a double registered ASPC/AMHR mare...  UMMM, she's 43" at the withers and the last mane hair?  well above the 38" for minis.  BUT her colt that she produced after I purchased her (supposedly by a much smaller mini only stallion) was under 38" at the cut off age, so he got his AMHR permanent papers.  Well, not so mini now - think he's hit the 41" now and he has "knifey" withers like his dam - so often seems much bigger.  ..  Ah well...

Skye (our daughter) saw her AMHR papers last night in our book and looked at me and said "HOW?".  I just shrugged as I couldn't say.

It's funny how folks say they are either much smaller than they really are (minis/shetlands) OR they say they are much bigger then they are (riding horses)...  :)  LOL.

CRAP!!!!
I had to trim Tana this morning, didn't notice anything amiss before doing that.  Trimmed up Spotty too.  Bliss was a little upset outside the barn with her mom and the rest of the horses; came out after finishing and Bliss has a fresh cut on her lip, a deep one, goes through at least two layers, the edges are already pulling apart because of the muscles in the lip.   Called regular that travels, she's out of the office listed today's date as end of date for being out.   Called other vet, she's just coming off maternity leave so only working half days, and I have to bring her in, as she'd want x-rays.  Called the last resort vet; one is out of the office today, and they don't know where the other one is (they come down from Canada, not sure what their schedule is).   crap, crap, crap.
going out to take another look and see if we are loading up and heading to town.   She's over two months old, so will still need to bring mom, which involves emptying the horse trailer.   My two-horse hasn't been hooked up in at least 4 years, so no idea if the tires are good or nothing.
Crap.  Going to go check her again, now.

I'm home, we are going to survive.  9-10 stitches in two places and two weeks healing, she will hopefully be good as new.
Have pics to share.  My MIL took before pics with her phone at the clinic, and I took after pics at home.
There is something to be said about a tiny horse, a small vet, average vet tech and a good size two-horse straight load with divider...  They all fit.   Vet worked in the trailer as she felt it was a good sized space to work and mare was in next stall to comfort baby; she put her supplies in the manager and they went to work.

Here on the pics, two before, two after.  She has green stitches.

She also has a smaller cut right below her nostril, vet put three stitches in that too.  I didn't think it looked that bad, but she felt it would heal better with a couple stitches.   Stitches come out in two weeks.

Draggin' my wagon this morning, so haven't been out yet.   I'll be happy to see them still in her nose this morning.  Hopefully, she's staying out of trouble.  Put her and Bonny in the little paddock by themselves for the night, hope it didn't upset her and cause her to do something silly.

Doing fine this morning.
After a couple trips around the pen, I managed to catch her, put some ointment on her wounds and give her a short leading lesson; then turned loose to go out and graze with everyone.   Happy group this morning.  Can't find where she did it.   still need to look closer at possible wire, but no nails that I can find.

She has a loose stitch, one knot came undone; but the skin is still tight together, so I'll just keep an eye on it.

It ought to be interesting removing stitches in a couple weeks, but hopefully by then we'll have more halter training under our belt, and she'll be good.

Yeah! My little Syrup had a 2 inch deep gash between her hind legs between her udder and vulva. She has been doing OK with halter training but it was still so hard to get that fixed and to clean it every day! Ended up the only way we could do it was my husband lifting her like a baby and holding her legs open for me to do all the cleanings
Title: Re: Bliss: New filly for Chanda!!

Dang, in two weeks there might not be any stitches to remove at this rate, another loose stitch this morning.   All the edges seem to be stuck together, so hopefully they'll stay that way.    The stitches haven't completely fallen out, but two have come untied and one loop undone.
catching was a little easier this morning, but not much.   And, after a little ointment on her nose, I lead her down to the pasture gate, it helped that Bonny was walking that way, anyway, she's always the first to the gate to go out.

Hope little Syrup heals up quickly for you.

Hope little Syrup does well.  Sounds like you're "ON IT" just perfectly!!

Keep us posted Chanda.  When cuts are sutured within that first 24 hours, you have the best chance of having those edges bond together well.  And you were so fast, I'm praying those edges hold beautifully for you.

Oh and syrup is all good now! Vet came out the first day to totally flush it and clean it really well. Just had to do daily flushes and ointment for almost 2 weeks and all is good now:) I could fit my whole baby finger inside of it!

Never did find a spot where she snagged it, probably never will.
Seems to be healing fine.  Will keep an eye on it and hope no more come loose.

I know it's still early in the healing, but looking at it this morning, she might have one little pucker spot; but I don't think it'll be very noticeable.

At least she did it at home. It's in the same place my first horse's was.

Waaaay back in the last century (I love typing and saying that! ;-p ) I qualified my two year old half-Arab gelding for Region 9 halter. He cut his busy nose in the same place....BUT....he did it on the show grounds the day before his class. *Gaaaaahh!!*  We looked all around his stall and the adjoining stalls and found nothing. When the show vet arrived, he took one look and stated "I know EXACTLY how it happened. Someone cut him with a knife." Talk about a shocker! Seems that several half-Arabs received similarly suspicious wounds. It was a very rude awakening to what can happen on the rated show circuit. We did get cleared to show, and ended up Top 5 in a class of 12. I was so proud, since Gameel was my very first horse. I'd trained him from a wild weanling that was herded onto the trailer, into a respectably competitive show horse. He was the "resume" that earned me my apprentice position with Harlan and Marge Moehlman. They bred/owned/trained '69 National Champion Zarabo++. At shows with them, at least one groom stayed in the barn at all the times. We even slept in the grooming stall. But I never once complained, as I understood the "why."

Well, we were alone, so at least I know she did it to herself.
I can't believe what people will do at a show to win or at least knock out the competition.  I've heard of tails cut (just banging them right below the bone, so they have a whispy tail), forelocks cut off and a few other minor inconveniences, but never actual cutting like you are saying; scary thing is, I don't doubt it happened (I don't live where it's all sunshine and roses, and I know crap happens, unfortunately).

Bliss is gonna have a "bubble" on her lip, hopefully, she'll grow into it, and it won't be noticeable as she grows.  Hopefully, the rest will heal uneventfully and smoothly.

No problem.

I get to stock up hay pellets next week.  I was trying to figure out how to make time for the 150 mile one-way trip to TSC to pick up the hay pellets I like for Topper's treat toy, I buy 10-12 bags at a time, they usually last him about a year in his treat ball (I give him enough in his ball to make up his breakfast in the summer, and just a treat in winter).  Well, I talked to my Mom a week or so ago, and she needed to make an appointment with the doctor down there (podiatrist, she has a couple very bad ingrown nails, that need to be trimmed or possibly removed), and she asked if I'd drive her, so I said sure, but we'd have to take my pick-up, so I can fill it up with hay pellets for the ponies.  She'll likely pay for my gas and buy lunch, so win-win; and I get to spend the day with Mom, always good (although, she is a bit of a bad passenger).  Her appointment isn't til 1:30PM, so we don't even have to get up at the crack of dawn.

Happy Belated Bday from me as well!  Glad that you got your cake and Frozen Lemonade.

What big town do you go to?  It's been so long since I've been in that situation, I can't imagine only going "once in a blue moon"...  A couple of times, I've been to the feed store here more than once in 1 week.  Just seems so weird, LOL.

We did that when I was in Montana for groceries.  Dad (step) was retired Air Force and we'd go 96 miles one way to go to "the big stores" for shopping 1x a month.  Took coolers in the back of the truck to get meat at the Commissary and other perishables from both Commissary and other stores.  We got our feeds (at the time) at a feed store 9 miles from Mom and Dad's place.  There were other stores (at that time) in Shelby for incidentals/milk/bread - but we still did our major grocery shopping that 1x a month.

Our food goes bad here in the humidity (even in the house!!) or stale or gets freezer burn PDQ.  It's just a totally different experience...  Ummmm...not sure where I was going with this.   ???

Not even that big of a town, we're going down to Sidney for a doctor's appointment, with the oil exploration they got a TSC 3-4 years ago, so I have access to their horse feeds and pet feeds.  And, they gained a good sized grocery store.  Otherwise still not much there.

And it's really scary!  Google had LOTS of pics of Sidney...  I miss Montana.  Some of those pics (plus the one of your boys) made it hard to see the screen.

Too big?  I'm not sure I follow what you mean.

And, yes, very scary around Williston, only slightly less scary in Sidney and I won't be there alone, so that helps.  And, not as scary as Wolf Point has gotten to be (mostly after dark) the last several years (drugs and gangs have gotten very bad).

Looks like she's slipped a few more stitches, at this rate, I think I'll only have one left to remove (the one that is caked with ointment and dirt, so that knot isn't coming undone).
Just a tiny little "bubble" in her lip, so I'm thinking I'll probably be the only one that will ever notice it.  Once the stitches come out, I'll get a picture and let you guys decide.

I drive the 20 minute drive into town to our feed store and sometimes grocery store 2 times a day some days haha just today I was at the feed store twice lol

We usually only go to town every other week, but sometimes stuff comes up, like this last week; I was in town 3x in 4 days.   I live 65 miles from a decent town, about half of that is gravel.  [I only live 37 miles from the town my mom lives in, but there is only one tiny grocery store, one hardware store and a couple gas stations, and all are rather expensive, so we don't shop there much.]

Hey Chanda, think I must have been having a blind few days!  In spite of popping in here every morning for a quick read through, not only did I miss that you had had a Birthday - belated Best Wishes from me - I also missed the news about poor Bliss, bless her.  Hope the little sweet girl holds everything 'together' until it heals properly.  ;pray  Note to myself 'must pay more attention when reading through the threads!'

Thank you.  Not a problem, easy to miss.   I've missed a few, I'll read one or two, and not notice there is another new one to go.
It's looking better and better everyday.  Just 3 more days til I can take out the few stitches that stayed in and we'll see just how well it's healed.

Finally had time this afternoon and trimmed Bliss's hooves; she did pretty good.  She hasn't learned to tie, yet, so I had to follow her around the stall to trim her, but it wasn't too bad.
Tomorrow, I'll be driving Mom to her doctor's appointment, so I will be going to TSC to stock up on hay pellets while I'm there (150 miles trip for me, so gotta stock up while I'm there).

Have a safe drive tomorrow! And I hope your mother's appointment goes well!

Picked up  14 bags of hay pellets today; if you drive that far, you stock up.   ;)   Oh, and I get to unload from the pick-up and stack in the feed room tomorrow morning (need to unload at least one bag before feeding, so I can open one).

Stitches out this morning.  I'm pretty sure the vet put in 9 stitches or close to it, only 3 lasted til today for removal, and two had a tiny bit of discharge when I pulled them out.  Put ointment on after removing the stitches, will continue to put ointment on for a few more days while it heals some more.
Picture of before removing the stitches and after.

As to the stitches - sometimes it sucks to have minis.  Your vet probably could have used smaller suture - maybe didn't have it?  That looked huge on her.  I'm so glad that she is healing well for you.

I thought the suture looked really big.  And, since I was at the clinic, you'd think she would have had access to smaller suture, since she's a mixed clinic and does cats, dogs and livestock.  It's moot now, the stitches are removed and she's healed quite well, despite most of them coming out on their own.   ???

Need to get ready to do paperwork.  Bliss's paperwork will be easy, I'm going to use the drawing, and it'll be blank; she has no white markings.  Just mark it silver buckskin and pick a name.    At least she won't have fuzzy distorted pictures on her papers.   [Wonder if I should send my paperwork work in separately, so they don't put Spotty's pics on Bliss's papers (they did swap pics on me once.]

Hell Coulee Toppers Jorga Bliss
and
Hell Coulee Tanas Spots on Top

Both are sired by Little Kings Cat on Top, a Buckeroo's TopCat son.

Bliss's dam is Lucky Harts Blizzard by George, a daughter of Little Kings Buckeroo God (aka: George, a cremello son of Boone's Little Buckeroo)
Spotty's dam is LeMars Montana Maid, a granddaughter of Hilltop's Little Vegas.

Last chance for pictures for a little bit, we started harvest, and I'm hauling grain and putting it in the bin.  Only reason I got any pics this morning, one grain truck has a flat tire, so Shayne is changing it.
Since I don't need pics on Bliss's paperwork, no white markings, so I'm just going to use the diagram, I only took a handful this morning.
I don't know why, but her coat almost always has a weird sheen to it in pictures.  Anyway, here are a few I took, might be in two posts:

Thank you very much.  I think so too, and can't wait to see what's under all that fuzz in the spring.

Let me show you a picture of Bonny (Bliss's dam) her foal year (all blinky since she's double cream and has blue eyes, she doesn't have as much problems with the sun/brightness now):

Is Bliss a Smokey Cream?  She's such a unique color, with the traces of "socks" but not really!

I've seen some Smokey Creams that are very light, but I've also seen them with a darker shade having socks, with mane/tail color more defined.

Just wondering.

The last picture I posted is Bonny (Bliss's dam), and she is a silver smokey cream (registered as cremello, she's not tested).
Bliss is a silver buckskin (Topper is bay, so she can't be double cream, and she doesn't have blue eyes).

I forgot about Topper again!  DUH!  Poor boy, and he's so beautiful!  And I confused the pictures.  That's what I get for giving up 5 weekends for a class an hour away.  Too much traveling and work, and not enough rest!  Oh well, one weekend down, and 4 to go!!

Being it's full-size suckling size, she won't be able to wear it terribly long, but I think Bliss needs this Lilac halter:
https://www.tackwholesale.com/fleece-padded-nylon-halters-suckling-super-sale-p-5093.html
I usually get just the $8 halters for the minis, as I don't like to pay much, but this one is so cute.

I ordered it.  Paid way more than I usually do for a halter, but just had to get this halter, even if she can only wear it a couple years.

She may be able to wear it longer than I thought, and I can also take off the fleece to give it a little more room.   It's a full-size suckling halter, and a bit too big (on the tightest hole), right now, but I think it'll work for quite some time for her.  I think it's pretty cute on her.

Just cute comparison, first is on June 20 and second on Nov 20; so 5 months apart.

Thank you.  Now to find a lilac lead, or one with lilac in it.  Hard to find leads longer than 6' sized for minis.  I'm nearly 6' tall, so prefer 8' or 10', so they are long enough to reach down to the minis and tie around our posts (Shayne puts in railroad ties for fence posts).

Chanda - what are your preferred colors?  Favorites, will blend/contrast w/ lavender/lilac, farm colors?

All of mine have their own colored halters, some with matching leads, some with white leads I made from some rope I found.  I was thinking either all lilac or probably lilac and purple.  I found one on Horseloverz but don't want to pay their shipping for one item, I'm going to look when we ship calves in two weeks, there's a store like TSC down there.

Sent you a pm.

Shoot, not coming up with lavender.  Come close with a mix of pink purple & white in 2 different patterns, but not the same as lavender.  :(

So, no real lavender, but some colors that if mixed w/ purple & white MIGHT look sorta lavender?  Let me know.  2 strands of one of the first two, then 1 strand of purple and 1 strand of white? Or 2 & 2?  Dunno.  I'll check some more, see if I can find lavender.  This is just whom my farrier and I get cord from.

I found a lavender, made in the USA and I can have it by Friday...

Meant to send this private, oops - ended back out on the thread.

That's ok.
I like the Aloha.  Two of that, then one each of purple and white?  Second choice would be the country girl camo.
Thank you.

Paula, the snap I've been using is on this lead, it does have a swivel.  I'm sure I bought it at our local ACE, but I can't find it on their website.  [my picture.]

One like this would work: http://p.globalsources.com/IMAGES/PDT/B1054210892/Rigging-Hardware-Brass-Swivel-Spring-Snap-Hook.jpg

I'm pretty sure the one I'm using looks like this one:  http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mK8EBzMkt2TFtAIKPfG8XtA.jpg

I just like them to be swivel and appropriately sized for minis (yet still strong enough for the minis, I know tall order).
Thanks.

Waiting for a reply back from my farrier as to what she actually has in stock.  Now that I've put those colors out there, if she doesn't have them, it may be a little harder to get them.  Hmm...  Jumped the gun a bit.  Hopefully I hear back from her tomorrow, know I won't any more tonight.

Most of the commercial mini leads, my ponies will break (but Koalah is a solid 497#s when not pregnant and in good weight).  I usually purchase mine from either Valley vet or Jeffers - the brass ones.  Not as low priced as they used to be but they do hold up well.  I've got one on hand, may be bigger than you like, though...

There are all of a sudden more USA suppliers now.  They weren't all out there just 3 years ago.  I found another supplier w/ the Aloha that I can get in smaller supply and still pretty quick.  Not by tomorrow, but...

As long as it's not a bull snap, I'm sure it'll be fine (I think I have maybe ordered from Valley Vet or Jeffer's in the past, when I've bought snaps).   And, if the Aloha or Country girl camo aren't available, just purple and white, 2 and 2 would be great.
If it's not too small, can you use any halter hardware?  I have a halter's worth of rings and buckles with nothing to do with them.

Not really a close up shot.  This mare is 43/44" tall and is wearing a weanling size Clinton Anderson halter w/ one of my 4 strand lead ropes (2 purple, 1 black, 1 white strand).  Gracie is about 5-1/2 yrs old in this pic (just turned 6 last week).

I'll get some close ups  tomorrow - of the braid and the loop I make for putting on/removing the snaps.

Looks great, and 10' is a great length.
I still don't get why people want 6' mini leads, except I guess for kids leading; cause you really can't tie with a 6' lead and an adult doesn't have much length to lead with if it's only 6'.

Well, didn't get the pics yet.  But had ordered the cord (Aloha, Lavender & Breast Cancer Awareness) and the box was picked up this morning.  I will have some different mixes of colors cut by tonight and start braiding.

Once I have the different mixes done, will do pics of that by Sunday eve and should be able to send a lead rope off on Monday.

Here are the colors that I ordered:

Interesting word - don't you love computers/phones and either auto-correct or hitting the wrong keys   ;)  ?

I have the 1st one almost done.  It's 4 strands - 2 aloha; 2 lavender.  It's very small in diameter, though, since the multicolored cord for some reason is smaller than the regular solid colors.

I'm going to find sizing for 6 & 8 strand braided lead rope as I'm out of practice figuring amounts for lengths.  Then will braid one or the other in 10' length to see if I like it better.  8 strand will be round, like 4 strand; 6 strand would be flat on one side and 1/2 round or maybe can do full round - depends on pattern of braiding.

Here is the first finished lead rope in these colors.  It's a little over 10' in length.  The loop is to attach a snap of choice.  The knot on the end is a simple overhand knot (didn't do a Turk's Head yet).

Thanks All!

I've been working on the 6 strand one - also making it completely round.  I'd forgotten what it was like to braid it this way - woof, my hands are raw from doing this one.  Hasn't helped - I've undone and redone the top part (about 10") with the loop 3 other times.  This time, the 4th, seems to be the charm.  I'd done 2 strands of each color and was having a problem w/ the 2 blacks.  Finally changed it to 2 of the Aloha & 1 black then 2 lavender & 1 white.  Makes is so much easier to recognize what goes where - when.  Haven't taken any pics of it yet, will do that later this week...

I'm still having some problems with keeping the tension right on this type of braid, so it is twisting somewhat (the color is shifting around).  While it's not a big problem, and most would never know, since I know about it, I don't like it.  It's just short of driving me crazy!  But this too, shall pass, LOL.

Hey Bliss, how are you growing? Able to get out much? Or is winter causing mischievous minds to meddle where they shouldn't?

She is a little naughty, she manages to get into the round bale feeder, but can't seem to figure out how to get out, so I have to help her out.   One of these days, she'll no longer fit through the slots (she only fits the 3 slots where the pieces connect together).

Happy New Year Bliss! I bet she thinks she's a grown up mare now that she's a yearling. Will be interesting to hear about herd dynamics now that Tana and Bonnie are back. Does the snow make it easier for her to get into the hayrings? Do y'all have snow paths constructed? How are the cattle?

We only have maybe four inches on the flat, only where it's blown and drifted is it very deep (so far just a corner of the gelding pen, and the back gate in Topper's pen are getting deep).
Bonny and Tana were only one pen over, so no excitement to speak of, but the are happy to be back in the big paddock.
Cows are doing what they do best... eating.

A little rearranging this morning for breakfast.   Bliss has been using Bonny's stall (her dam) during weaning, well now that I've put all the mares back together, Bonny wants her stall back, 9 year habit is hard to break, so Bliss got a new breakfast table this morning, and she's in the "overflow" paddock/shelter for her meals now.   Wasn't too hard to get her to go in to the pen, especially once I dumped her feed in the pan.  We'll see how easy tomorrow is.

Ok, so it's a tad early to pull out the clippers, but I did it anyway, as we've had unseasonably warm weather and the horses are rubbing quite a bit.   I did a little bit of head and neck clipping on Bliss, you'll have to look past the clipper tracks as I didn't want to shave her bald but just take off some of the fluff.  She tolerated it quite well and almost seemed to enjoy it; well, at least on her neck, she didn't like her cheeks and jaw worked on.

I'm not too sure that Bliss doesn't nurse some off Bonny.  Bonny has a bit of a firm bag, not much but more than she usually has without a foal at side; and I've seen Bliss look longingly at Bonny's udder area (not seen actual nursing, but a guilty look and quick retreat if I'm around).  Perhaps just reading more into it than there is, I don't know.

Bliss got her first vaccination today, just the basics since no horses come and go and I don't show.   She was pretty good for the vet.  [Vet was out for bull testing, so just had her vaccinate while she was here.]

Only a little bit.  And, her stall is easier to pin a horse along a wall and get it done.
Guess, this means it's time to start kindergarten.

I'll try to get pictures tomorrow.  I clipped a bit more of Bliss today, she had some areas that were matting really bad, so had to clip those mats before they pulled on her skin too much.  Mostly in her armpit, flank and down her belly, so her top and sides are still pretty fuzzy.   May end up finishing the clip job, but for now, she is more comfortable.
Need to trim her hooves tomorrow, I think, schedule says she's only about 6 weeks out, but still might trim sooner rather than later.

Trimmed little miss stinks hooves today; she was actually quite good, and just a bit fidgety for one leg.
And, I'll try to get updated pictures after we brand later this week, right now is mostly prep for branding.

Got a couple quick pictures of Bliss at suppertime tonight, not great as she was more interested in stuffing her face.
One pic shows the dark spot in her tail.

No pics, but I was looking tonight, and Bliss is a bit tubby, mostly belly which is likely our hay quality (dry coarse hay, left-overs from last year, going to have to make due this year, due to the drought).  Her spine and hips are nicely covered, but her belly is tubby.  Going into winter, I'm not going to worry about it.

:o quicky measure of Bliss today puts her at almost 37", but my barn is uneven dirt floor, so hopefully that's a big measure.  When I officially measure, I bring them to the house and measure on the level, cement sidewalk.

Bliss has been horrible to Sophia pretty much since I brought her home and tried to introduce her to the herd; so I kept Sophia separate while pregnant and nursing.  Well, at weaning time for Belle, Sophia moved in with the girls, and Belle is in with Dolly.  Bliss chased, tried to kick, and just annoyed the crap out of Sophia for months; well, lately the tides are shifting and we had this today...
