All legs and spots, wasn't expecting either.  Monte, his full brother, wasn't this leggy at birth.

Here's Monte on day 1:

Thank you.

Oh, and Diane did a pedigree for Tana awhile ago, she traces to Chianti through her sire.  [Chianti is her sire's maternal grandsire.]

Looked a little more full this year, but more or less the same as her maiden year.  No pictures this year to prove it, though.

Ratty fuzzy, March picture of her, she doesn't look that pregnant, just like she wintered decently.

Guess that's about as much "V" as she gets, which was still 2 months out from delivery, but we'll know what to look for next time we're wondering about her!

He is likely getting his first non-family visitors tomorrow.  The retired vet up the road, along with her husband and their grandkids want to come see the mini baby.   [I don't know if it's their son or daughter's family, their kids moved away before I came to the area, so have never met the kids.]

I love him, but he's a little toot.   Mostly he runs away from me.   Tonight I sat on a bucket and he came a bit closer and decided I wasn't horrible after all.

Yes, on all accounts.   He tends to run sideways with his butt towards me, and one eye on me, but keeps his distance.

The thing I loved the most was just sitting in the paddock with the babies and getting to know their characters. It is amazing how they can be so different. I found that the alpha mare’s babies were always the difficult ones, where the lower the mare in the ranking the friendlier their babies were. Anyone else find that?

Yes, I did!  It seemed these little ones thought THEIR position was inherited.  It was fun watching them learn their true rank!

Now if he'll just friendly up.  He's only a bit over a week old, so plenty of time to tame the wild man.  Time to get the lawn chair and a book and watch the babies.

Taking the easy way out, and copy/pasting my post here, too.
I'll see if I can get a picture or two this afternoon, but as it's been raining and Shayne can't hay this morning, I got his help to trim the babies hooves.  What a rodeo!  Even though I've been picking up their hooves, I haven't started their halter training, so needed his help to hold the babies while I attempted trimming.  I think they might need a bit more, but it was enough stress for each today.   Spotty was a bit better behaved than Bliss, but not by much.   Gotta get on that halter training, so next time easier on all involved.
I was pooped after our baby rodeo and trimming Tana, too; so pics later, I hope.

Need to get ready to do Spotty's paperwork.  Will have to try to get pictures before he gets fuzzier, cause I'm not drawing all those spots.  No "normal" white markings on him either, no face white and no leg white; just spots on his bum.  And, he just might end up really dark bay like his daddy.
Diane, what are the chances he ends up a near leopard?  I need to get pictures, but I swear his white area is growing.  could be my imagination since I see him every day.

My first appy mare I bought when she was 2 and she was chestnut with a smallish spotty blanket.  Well she's 18 now and is covered in spots! Not to mention she roaned out so much.  If you put her yearling pics beside her you would recognize her! Appys are awesome that way lol

Yes, he likely will.  Not sure how many sheds I'll see, as I'm debating selling him.  If the right home comes along, he's available.   Since I live in the sticks, he may just stay here.   :o

Last chance for pictures for awhile, so a little overload on Spotty to hopefully get something good enough for his paperwork, I'm not drawing those spots.    His coat is soft, almost velvet like.  [Bliss's coat isn't as soft.]
Probably 2-3 posts worth of Spotty pics:
Three of them sort of shows his white ear

Here are the rest, including a couple with barn kitten BlueToo.  [He looks like our housecat, Blue, we lost this spring/summer, so I'm calling him BlueToo.]   Shayne would like to bring this little kitty in, but the current 4 housecats would likely object.

He is beautiful Chanda.  And yes, he will continue to expand that white and will become a "near" leopard, probably keeping dark below the knees and some on the neck, but it appears his white is spreading, and we love to see that.

How'd harvest time go Chanda? You said it looked like it might be good, I'm hoping it was. Spotty will be fun to watch when he sheds out next spring. It looks like so much of his current dark coloring will be gone...he may just end up with the extremities dark!

I have a question about hooves. Since he has the much more obvious appy stripes to his hooves, do you find that are harder than either white or black hooves? If I remember correctly, you trim your own. Do you even notice a difference in trimming the different colors?
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!
Post by: Chanda on October 30, 2016, 04:49:04 PM
Harvest was slow due to wet weather (we don't usually get so much fall rain), we just finished a couple days ago, but still have his dad's field to combine, weather permitting.
I've not really noticed a difference in hoof toughness between the colors.

Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!

I need to advertise a bit better for someone to come knocking on my door for him.
Sometime in the next month, he'll get moved over to the gelding paddock and get a new education; the mares seem to let him get by with anything and everything; and we don't want a whoops, so we'll put him out with the boys.
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!
Post by: Chanda on January 06, 2017, 03:05:07 PM
Weaning part 2...  Moved Spotty over to the gelding pen today.  I thought I had gotten further with his halter training, guess not, what a stink.   I let the gelding out on their little bit of pasture, put Spotty in their paddock, let them talk across the fence for a few, then put them together.  spotty was more worried about the mares he just left than the gelding he just joined.   Too cold to stay out and watch for very long; and tomorrow, I'll have to figure out the logistics of feeding 4 boys in the same paddock.
Turned Tana and Bonny back out with the other mares and Bliss, will make my life easier to only have one mare pen for winter; one water tub to work with and one hay feeder to fill up.
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!
Post by: Chanda on January 06, 2017, 06:57:48 PM
Went out to feed tonight, and the geldings are less impressed with Spotty now than when I turned him.  I know it takes them time to figure out their positions, so I put out more piles than horses to be sure Spotty gets a chance.  [The three geldings usually just eat at the feeder, but adding Spotty has them all goofy, so put it in piles around the paddock.]

Odd number of hay piles should help with getting bossed about. Them not being too impressed with Spotty might humble him a bit also. Can't be a Studly StrangeLove if the girls could care less where he is and the boys treat him like a bothersome upstart! LOL

Is it too cold to get pictures of them wading around in the snowbanks? Do your fences disappear under it? Hope everything transitions smoothly and you get to quilt a bit.

Single digits, so camera doesn't really like the cold; but I'll see what I can do before winter snow is gone.   We don't have enough snow this year to have drifted under fences, but it's happened before, and Jasper walked right up a snowbank and over the fence (put up a mesh panel in that spot til snow melted).

Picture is 2009, at the time it was Dakota's pen, now it's Toppers:
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!
Post by: Chanda on January 07, 2017, 05:32:43 PM
Put up a pipe panel for a gate across the second shelter to make a third feed spot for the geldings.   Manny and Monte go in the big shelter and share a stall, so I'm sure someone gets more than his share, have been doing this for 3 years, so they get along fine.   Today, Dakota went in the other shelter with the "new" panel gate for his meal; and Spotty had free run of the main paddock.    They seem to be getting along pretty good today.    Eventually, I'll need to decide about selling or gelding Spotty, I have no plans to raise appies, so if he stays he'll be gelded.

He'll probably push the limits, so maybe someone that does CDEs.  Sport ponies?
Monte was 37" at time to take permanent.  My mares are 38" and Topper is 35.75".

Spotty had his first vaccination today, naughty boy and naughty me, I need to get to work and do lots more halter training, he was a stinker, but no one got hurt, even when he threw himself on the ground in a hissy fit (sometimes a winter's long poo pile is a good thing, soft landing).

OMG, U guys are 2 funny!!!!!  ("soft landing", typical male<tantrum>)...

and some more pics are in order.  I understand not though - I'm having troubles with both phone and camera taking pics lately...  Larry took apart my phone case and cleaned up the "eyes" for me (on the case & the phone), but I'm not sure how much good it did.  Think it needs to be done to the camera, too.

Managed to head and neck clip Spotty, much less drama than trying to give him a vaccination.  He seemed to almost enjoy it.  Although, afterwards, he really didn't want to have anything to do with pics, so just a couple to show is nekked neck.

He looks VUNDERBAR! (wonderful)

and he also looks like he's developing more body white?  Any clues as to how much he can develop?  But he won't go full boyd white like a leopard app will he?
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!
Post by: dcwolcott on April 23, 2017, 11:53:41 AM
He is definitely adding white, and could wind up a near leopard -- they usually have darker necks, but more white towards the shoulders.  Right now, he's definitely expanding that blanket and spots!  Such a pretty boy!

Yes, his white does seem to be expanding forward.  I have no idea about how appy patterning works, other than varnish will continue to roan as they age til they lose most color except for on the bony prominences.
thank you.

Hope I don't end up with a pintaloosa pony...   Spotty is all moony-eyed over my 20 year old, 15.2H APHA mare.  They share a water tank, with diagonal adjacent corners at the tank, not side-by-side.   Hope he doesn't go swimming.  :o

People always say "don't worry minis drop late, it's normal, just wait", well, it's not normal, it's a man created issue, they should be down at birth, ok so perhaps they "disappear" for awhile as some are good at holding them up high, but they should be through the canal at birth or shortly after.
So, I managed to cop a feel on Spotty the other day, two little jewels, right where they belong, Spotty is nearly a year old.
His two brothers (one full, one half) were also down at birth, and could have been gelded as yearlings, but circumstance delayed it til they were two year old.

Very true, very true.  I only had one boy who seemed to be "missing one" at birth, but it did drop a few months later.  Some do hold them high, but I guess I was pretty lucky, because it's so hot here in Florida, almost all were hanging "low" for cooling!   ;D

Ours definitely hold 'em up high and tight in winter, protecting their "assets" as it were.

OMG!  What a stink Spotty was for his hoof trim today.  He was just crawling out of his skin.  He was kicky, jumpy, climb the walls goofy.   he was decent the last time I trimmed him, not at all like this; I'm sure some of it is hormones as he's moony eyed over my APHA mare and some of it is lack of training, but his brothers were nothing like this as yearlings.   He might be more like his dad, who is a bit tightly wound.  I think I might try one of the calming supplements, as I believe our forage is short magnesium, which Mg deficiency can lead to flightiness.  Might try Vit B1, as it's supposed to be calming as well, it's what I used on Topper for awhile.

Sorry to read young spotty was a pain in the backside for his trim. Not sure if it would help , but when my little one was weaned and learning to have his feet trimmed Id get him to stand for half an hour before the farrier arrived, If he played up it was onto the next one and he had to continue to stand until we got back to him. It took a while for him to learn to accept he had to have them trimmed and once he stood like a good boy for all four hooves he was rewarded with some apple.

Isnt is funny,  I have a rather large warmblood mare at the back of the property and my smallest mini is madly in love. He winnies to her as a 17 hand warmblood himself. :)

Unless someone knows someone looking for a B-size appy stallion prospect; Spotty is looking to lose his jewels sooner rather than later, he has way more attitude than either of his brothers did at this age.  Perhaps I didn't notice it as much with the first three (one sold, two were gelded at 2), as they had each other to burn off energy, but Spotty seems a whole lot more studdy than his brothers were.

I ordered B1 and Mg for Spotty and Topper, they'll split a month or two of smartpaks, smallest packaging available for what I want (otherwise the B1 is a 112 day supply for full-size horse).

Took a couple pictures of the boys at suppertime tonight.
I swear to god, Manny is not as fat as he looks in the picture (he's chubby, as I think he gets more than his share of the pellets, but not that fat).  [Manny is the one by the water tank.]
Then, a picture of the two full brothers together; Monte and Spotty.  [Neither are as chubby as they look.  Both still have more shedding to do, especially around their barrel.]
And, then just Spotty.  [I deleted the blurry pic and the butt shot.]

Put Spotty on a FB sale page, as I'm still thinking about it.
Got a few stupid "hits", like the guy looking for a mini for  his kid to gain confidence.  You don't pick a yearling colt as a confidence builder in a kid.   And, a couple other responses would be no go for me, they just gave me the wrong vibe for my boy.   And, a couple could be good.

Have any of your prospects turned out to be good ones as future owners of Spotty?

Nothing panned out.  A couple gave me bad feelings, a couple were looking for a first mini for a kid (not a yearling colt, at least not this one, he's pretty randy), a couple didn't have a clue and the best prospect can't until spring.   Like the rest he'll probably stay, we'll just geld him in the spring.
I love his white ear tips, one is still very noticeable, the other not so much now.

Well, that was interesting...
I went out to feed the geldings, Spotty is with the geldings and I heard a clanging noise while walking over to the gelding barn, can't see anything, as there is hay stacked in the way.  Get over there and Spotty has the hang on the fence feeder around his fetlock, he had stepped through the loop at the top.  Normally, they are all tied to the fence, but after while the twine gives out and I have to tie them up again, didn't get it done quick enough this time.   I caught him, tied him to the fence and he calmly let me pull the feeder off his leg.
No harm, no foul.

It was breakfast time, so I did get Monte and Manny in their breakfast room, which only left Dakota to be in the way, and he's pretty calm, so not likely to rile him up.  Then, I just had to halter him, I did have to make him walk about 3 steps with the bucket on his leg, so I could tie him to a post, as he didn't want me to go around his head to get to the side with the bucket.

Next time you see Spotty, he'll be a gelding, he's on the schedule for two weeks from yesterday; vet is coming to test bulls, so he'll be gelded while she is here.  Hopefully, this will be early enough to avoid too much spring shenanigans.   We might still have snow on the ground, but hopefully there will be enough clear ground that I can walk him if necessary; perhaps their pasture will be out from under a 3' drift.

Ok, so you might all think I'm weird, but...  Spotty likes Dr Seuss.
Spotty is a bit of a handful, and doesn't always stand well for hoof trims.  Today was hoof trim day, and the corrals are still mucky, especially the shelters, so I had to pick a dry spot outside, making it a different place for trimming, so new distractions.   He was squirmy, so I made up some Dr Seuss for him; although it was only one line, and he seemed to chill.   His Dr Seuss is: One foot, two foot, red foot, blue foot.
When I work with my squirmier horses, I tend to indicate which hoof I'm going to work on next by touching that shoulder or hip and tell them this foot.  Today, we added Dr Seuss to it.   ??? :o ;) ;D

No! I don't think that odd at all, rhymes for our Spotty friend.
'Cause trimming feet, as we all know's a chore that never ends.
Perhaps he's thinking just a bit, to throw your mind off track,
in case you'll change opinion and you'll leave his jew'ls intact.
If, however, they're long gone, I'm sure that you may find,
that hearing rhymes from Dr. Seuss will occupy his mind!!

I couldn't resist offering this little ditty, since "two weeks from yesterday" would have been the 18th.  Did the vet come out, test bulls and geld Spotty? I'm pretty sure winter hasn't left your part of the world yet.  If I understood the bit of weather stuff I've seen this week, the storm that sent a tornado through Greensboro NC (about 55 miles north of us) dropped snow in y'alls part of the world.  Even if it didn't, mud is only fun to slog around in during mid-summer, when it's warm outside and you're celebrating being 6-12 years old.
Title: Re: Spotty: Tana's New Colt!!

Vet comes on Wednesday, and no cute rhyme will save his jewels.  I have enough intact boys and do not want more spotty kids, unless of the pinto variety.
Weather is decent, we've hit 50s, so much of the snow is now gone, except for the piled up snow and one big drift in the northwest corner of the yard.    County fixed the washed out country road fairly quick, so we can drive down our county road again (it was impassible, as there was a 6" drop off and a 6' wide wash-out).

Spotty is now a gelding.   He was so rambunctious, that the vet gave him extra sedation, and then he wanted to continue sleeping after his procedure was over.    [Also needed Shayne's help to hold him still to give him his first shot, a little dose of IM ACE to chill him out.]
I have to feed a ltitle bit late tonight to be sure both horses that had sedation are fully awake before dinnertime.   Spotty is currently in a separate outside temporary pen (put up some panels around him for him to wake up in while we worked on TAna).
Tana had a growth on her leg, I'm not going to spend the $80 on pathology for something we are 90% sure is a sarcoid by looks and growth pattern.  I first spotted it when trimming hooves in February, and it was smaller than my pinky fingernail; when I noticed it again about 10 days ago, it was about the size of my thumbnail.  The vet excised it, stitched it and wrapped; wrap changes every other day for the next week.
Also rabies vaccinated 10 barn cats (all we could catch, they knew something was up and scattered).   And, of course, the main reason the vet came, we tested the bulls, and unfortunately 2 tested bad, so will head to auction soon.

I know I've said this before but I really have no knowledge of cows. Are these young ones your testing , ones that will be suitable for your future breeding ? Or is this something you need to do on a yearly basis regardless of age ?

How many bulls do you have and how many cows all up ? ( sorry for the many questions ) 😊😊

All bulls are tested, and we've been testing most years. We don't raise our own, we buy them as yearlings, and they come tested, if they don't test well, they aren't sold as breeding prospects.
And, I don't answer "how many" questions, as it's akin to asking someone how much money they have in the bank.  I will tell you we have 12 bulls; mature bulls can breed around 30-35 cows a season, young bulls are good for like 20, but it really depends on their libido and how quickly they figure it out.

Need to walk and possibly cold hose Spotty, he's swollen this morning.  Perhaps I shouldn't have shut him in the shelter last night, but I wanted to give him a bit of time to recover before the other boys bothered him.   This morning, I turned them out into their upper paddock with hay, it's pretty much bare ground, but at least they have room to move around.

I didn't take it that way, especially from someone outside of raising livestock, but put it out there, so others would understand why you might not get a direct answer.

Spotty is still swollen, looks like he still has one down there.   I'll take him for a walk and cold hosing again today, after lunch.
I'm about 50/50 with swelling for gelding procedures.  One AQHA gelding no problem and one AQHA gelding was swollen, so got walked.  Dakota and Monte had little issue.  Manny and Spotty had swelling.

only basic groceries are a quick trip, and even that takes half a day, with the hour drive there and back.

Spotty is doing well, little to no swelling this morning, but he was a bit moody and more stand-offish than usual.

Glad he's improving.  He's probably still a bit mad at you for ending his fun before he began!   :D

I'm just glad I ended it before it got too serious.  Last year, he was just head over heels for my APHA mare; I think we got it done before it really kicked in this year.

Tonight at chore time, Spotty was chasing after Manny, so things are starting to get back to normal.  Hopefully, when his hormones wane, things will calm down a ltitle more and it'll be the "race is on" instead of "I'm going to annoy the piss out of you".  ;)

Poor Manny is just too complacent and takes all the crap that Spotty dishes out; Monte and Dakota put a whoa to his antics when they've had enough.

Me, too.  I'm sure it would help if I worked with them more, but I've been rather remiss in my training lately.

Perfectly normal , especially with the weather you had over winter. Now the weather is better , you see so many things that need doing before the colder months start to return !

I've had all summer, but have had the blahs and I don't want to do anything.  I barely get the basics done this year.

Sometimes that's just what we go through. Don't beat yourself up, it happens to all of us.  You will find your renewed energy when the time is right.

Spotty is feeling a bit punky today.
While he has almost colic-like symptoms, when he gets up from rolling or lying down, he takes off at a trot or canter, so I really don't think colic.  Perhaps our goofy weather as set off a bout of ulcers.    I took him for a walk and he was animated and ready to walk going away from the corral, and obnoxious and pushy going back to the corral; so started quiet for him, and was more like himself going back to the corral.  Got back to the corral and him promptly laid down.   before I took him on his walk, I gave him a dose of Uckele GUT and digestive support paste, may or may not help, but shouldn't hurt.

Here's a copy/paste of what I just sent to a friend in a message on FB (so a little repeat of previous comment):
Crappy weather rolling in and I have a colicy or ulcery horse on my hands.  Spotty is feeling punky today.   Doesn't seem quite right for colic, but seems a bit much for ulcers, I don't know maybe he's a pansy.   He seems better after a bit of banamine on board.  He's in a shelter, gated off from the other boys with a tub of water; I had to finish chores and do supper, and take a break; will go check on him in a little bit.  This crappy, unpredictable, unusual June/July weather seems to have set something off with him.   He's had some Uckele GUT digestive supplement, a Nexium (omeprazole for ulcers), and then banamine, which once the paste kicked in seemed to perk him up.   If it's colic, it's not typical; I'd spot him lying down and if I called to him he's jump up and trot or run off.  The first time I took him for a walk, he was a bit stoic going away from the gelding pen, but going back he was leaning and fussing and being his obnoxious self, so I'm not sure what to think.

All good this morning.  HAd a heck of an electrical storm with rain last night, got 3/4"; all I can think of is that he really felt it coming on and reacted to it.   I was going to give him some more of the GUT supplement this morning, but he wanted nothing to do with it, and was his normal obnoxious self.

It does sound a bit odd Chanda but you could be right about the weather/brewing storm, some animals are more sensitive to weather changes than others. Hope he's feeling better now.

Long over due update.
Got a couple pics of Spotty today, he's 5 today.
No idea what kind of a face Monte is making in the one picture, perhaps a yawn.  [If you don't recall, Monte is Spotty's full-brother, 4 years older.]
I'll try to get pics of Bliss when this darn rain quits.

Forgot to mention.  enlarge the pic with the bay gelding, and you can see Spotty's heart shaped spot on his right hip.
