Title: WELCOME TO OUR NEW MARE-TERNITY WARD !!! (MARE & FOALING FORUM)
Post by: dcwolcott on April 20, 2016, 08:54:15 PM
WECOME TO OUR NEW MARE-TERNITY WARD !!  We love to chat about all kinds of things while we wait for these special little ones to come to the ground safely, and sometimes we get a little crazy while we're waiting!

Here are the rules for the forum:

NO UNPLEASANT ATTITUDES OR COMMENTS.....

That's it!

We welcome you to chat with us while we wait.  We don't care if you have miniature horses, large horses or even donkeys.  And please feel free to share your other animals with us.  We're happy to see pictures of dogs, cats, cows, ducks...you have it....we'd love to see it -- especially the babies!

Do you have a craft hobby, or do something special with your spare time?  Please feel free to share that with us, too.  Add it right to your foaling thread if you'd like.  Waiting 11+ months for a mare to foal is a long wait, and we just want to chat through the waiting period.

Breeding question?  Ask it here, too!

We are all friends here, and we hope each of you will share your experiences with others here who are looking for help.  Everyone has something they can share, some special experience that may save a little one.  We learn from each other.  We do not have a "resident vet" here, so the help you get is from other breeders with different levels of experiences.  As always -- when in doubt, call your vet.  We are only here to help share what we have experienced, and we hope to help each other.

Post as much as you'd like.  We will not remove your posts -- unless you are unkind to a poster -- and we will love to get to know you as we wait.

Again, WELCOME TO THE NEW MARE-TERNITY WARD !!

~~Diane Wolcott, Castle Rock Miniatures

Diane, perhaps we should pin a couple more of the topics, like your wide load topic and my maiden mare topic, just so they stay handy.  I couldn't figure out how to do it, not sure if I am able.   Thanks.

Shall we all be Grannies now?  I don't have kids, but would still be old enough to be one, if I had started early, which I didn't.  I feel like I'm mom to my furkids, so that makes me granny to their foals.

Grannies works for me, unless, someone thinks up a better name!!  I think Renee came up with the first one.  Maybe she'll think up a new one!

Hello all!
Thank you for having me and my crazy critters. I hope to be a bit more active in the coming weeks. We are still in spring clean up mode here...comes from living in the Great White North!!....so we are still a wee bit hectic. With luck it will settle down to a dull roar soon.
I had no foals this year but we did have goat babies! I will post pics of our three kids soon as well as some of our many horses, ponies, minis, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks. We are a bit of everything here.
We got the opportunity to take in an older mini stallion for semi retirement. Silver Plate White Lightning, or Lightning is a 19 year old, 31.5 inch cremello. He will be standing to two mares this year and one a year in following years until we find him a nice gelding friend and retire him outright. I hope to post more about that soon. He is in all breed so feel free to have a peak if you are curious about his family tree. He has a nice one (or so I'm told! ;) )
Anywho, I am still setting up here and figuring things out but I wanted to touch base and say hi!

Take care all!!

Welcome.   Can't wait to see pics of your goat kids, they are too darn cute.   And, pics of your new grand old man.  Don't know him personally, but I've heard nothing good about Lightning and his progeny.  Hope you get a few more foals from him; 19 isn't terribly old for a mini, so if he's in good health, may you get a foal or two a year for several years.

I am so happy you joined us, and am very excited to know that you have Silver Plate White Lightning.  Yes, he is something special, and was bred by Lowell Boone, himself.  He's also a "Buckeroo" grandson, so those Gold Melody Boy lines are "top" and "bottom" on his pedigree.  He has 45 registered AMHA foals, and his pedigree also includes the Van't Huttenest horses, which I just love.  I had several horses with Gold Melody Boy lines, but direct from Gold Melody Boy -- not through the Buckeroo breeding.  But Lowell Boone was  a wonderful breeder of lovely horses!  Can't wait to see him!!

I'm including a copy of his full AMHA pedigree and list of progeny.  I also have a picture of his sire, that I'm including here, just in case you've never seen him before.

Attached is Boones Little Buckeroos Golden Toy.  I have lots of pictures of his "relatives" from his pedigree in my database.  He should throw you some beautiful foals!!  He sired 3 last year: 2 colts (1 palomino and 1 registered as a black--which has to be a smokey black since dad has 2 cream genes) and 1 palomino filly!!  And had a beautiful little Silver Smokey Black colt this year with a 6" canon bone that was born on March 16, 2016 and a blue-eyed splash buckskin filly born May 1st.  I found a picture of the new little ones online at: http://traffordsminiatures.weebly.com/2016-foals.html

So, he's still in his prime for siring!

The pedigree you can click on right below the picture of his sire.

I might have a picture of one of his foals, but not certain.
Nope its a granddaughter by one of his sons. [I'm pretty sure the breeder of this filly won't mind, even though she has sold on, this is my picture that I took at her place probably 10 years ago.]

Thanks all for the welcome. Glad to join the fun! Lightning is an amazing boy and such fantastic manners. I am so lucky to have been chosen as his final home. I have two mares that I will stand to him this year. The younger one is O'Henry's War Bonnet. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/o+henrys+war+bonnet
She is a sweet little chestnut medicine hat and her foal will be my keeper. The older mare is Flying W Farms Poetry In Motion. She is 17 so I am really hoping she catches this year as it may be one of her last. I think she is a perfect match to Lightning. I can't wait to see how they cross. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/flying+w+farms+poetry+in+motion
She is black so will be interesting to see what they make together. I hope to be able to get some pics up this week. We have just been crazy here but it seems to be letting up a bit. I hope. lol

Hello Diane.
I'm exploring and love it! Thank you so much for inviting me. And, thank you for everything else!
I'm still in the midst,  but will keep you informed. Ain't countin the chickens if you get my drift. Hahaha
Oh, I do have a question. If a mare delivers two still-born foals within 3 1/2 years, would you breed her again, or retire her?
Thank you again for your kindness and willingness to help with my journey. 🐎🐎

If this is from the breeder we have been talking about, I would dare say I would actually try it again, as with the care you would give, and with our friends here, I'm sure she can delivery a healthy little one.  That person is more a breeder who just lets things go by, as she is all about LOUD quantity, not necessarily the most caring person who would watch and make sure the mare got everything she needed during pregnancy.  We have a pretty good record here, and if its the mare we've spoken about, I know her breeder, and she should have no trouble.  She's already produced 2 fine offspring before going to this farm.

 ;D

Sorry just saw this! Yes, its the same... the mare is pregnant right now! Last two were stillborn.  She wants 1000 for her. But, I really wasnt considering breeding or having a baby so soon. Whats your opinion? Kind of apprehensive--
Title: Re: WELCOME TO OUR NEW MARE-TERNITY WARD !!! (MARE & FOALING FORUM)
Post by: dcwolcott on November 16, 2017, 07:16:33 AM
First, I know of few people that would ever say a foal is stillborn.  They can have, say, a twisted cord and die in utero, and then be delivered dead, but I don't know of any that were just born as a stillborn foal except in Rh factors.

I have heard, but not experienced, the death of foals sometimes with repeated breedings to a particular stallion, when there is a Rh factor blood type incompatibility.  Just like in humans that have a negative blood type, carrying a positive blood type baby.  My daughter, for example, is A- blood type, so she receives a shot for Rh incompatibility.  If she is bred to the same stallion, in that case, and offspring could be a stillborn, and die in utero.

I could be wrong, and ask others to correct me.  She may have also had a difficult delivery, with no attendance at birth, and the baby be found dead and the owner call it a stillborn.  However, this breeder is showing a horse as "sold" that I know the horse actually died.  But apparently rather than admit it, she marked the horse sold -- as a friend had an interest in it, and was told the horse died. So, with this breeder, it's a bit confusing when talking truth.

But as I say, I know this mares breeder, and she breeds quality, not quantity, so, I'd probably still take a chance.

But perhaps our friends here could render an opinion.  If she's pregnant for a spring foal, traveling would be safe at this point for her.

Post by: Ryan on November 16, 2017, 05:25:49 PM
I think Id take a chance too. I agree that there could be many reasons why the previous foals died. As Diane mentioned, many die due to no attendance at birth by their owners and more often than not their little mares have needed assistance.

To be really honest , it sounds like the current owner is a bit blase from reading below. The fact that Diane knows the mares breeder and knows her to breed quality over quantity, Id say go for it.

You will have plenty of help here , we will all join together to offer advice and support to help you give this foal the safest of arrivals, If you choose to take this mare on board.

The fact that she has had two quality foals , gives me the opinion she is looking looking for a scenery change :)

Ryan

I would agree. Quality environment, feed and husbandry can make a huge difference as well as attending the birth.
I would bring her home, have her BSE and or flushed. Maybe a round of SMZ as a preventative.

Thank you guys so much for your advice! I really like the little mare and emailed the breeder today to ask if the price she was quoted was negotiable. When she emailed me back she had upped the price by $200.00 then said she'd give me a break for buying two, and quoted me the original price again. Im waiting for the transport company to give me a price on two....
Also, I asked if she was a pocket, but she said, no, but possibly could be. If a mare is just used for breeding does that mean she's just a baby mill and isnt socialized? At 15 could that be an issue?? I dont want to breed for sale, I just want to love and spoil....

I bought a 12 year old mare this fall that I was told was hard to catch, but ok once caught, and that is exactly how she acted when I went to look at her.   I bought her anyway, largely because she is half-sister to a mare I lost last year.   She hasn't been that hard to catch since I brought her home, only taking a few steps away before being caught, I've dewormed without haltering, she lets me pet her, and it should only get better with time, especially come spring and nicer weather.

It's amazing what some personal attention can do with a horse.  Remember, she's just one of many where she is now, and really doesn't get much personal attention.  I would expect with good love and care, and a few treats, she'll be in your pocket.  Her breeder is a very caring person and always gave her horses great personal attention.  I would expect, she just needs to feel that security again to become the loving horse I'm sure she once was.

If she is with that many other horses , I reckon she will be glad to get out of that place. Not saying anything bad towards Large breeders, as most do amazing jobs. Some large breeders  on the other hand get way in over their heads and before you know it, care and individual attention has gone right out the window.

Hope you decide to give her a home. :)

Thank you all. Im trying to work it out. Hopefully both mini's will be Florida bound around Christmas. If the mare works out Im certainly going to need advice. It would just be devastating to lose her little foal. I was told that she's only had two foals with this breeder, one living one stillborn. But, this is a different sire. He's a tiny, few spot and just adorable.  Crossing my fingers...
