Title: Sophia - 2018
Post by: Chanda on January 21, 2018, 07:38:44 PM
She sure is starting look like her exposure is actually a pregnancy, so I'll start a thread for her and you can cross your fingers with me.   I'll try to get up all the details, eventually.

Lucky Harts Simply Sophia, 2005 grey mare; sire Lucky "C" Farms Robby, dam is a Roan Ranger daughter (also Blue Boy back there).   Exposed to silver black tobiano, that's all I know at this time.

She's 35-36" tall.

She could go as early as March, as what little foaling history I have she appears to be a 10 monther.  She was exposed for 2 months to the stallion, pasture breeding.  [I have the dates somewhere.]

[First pic from the seller, second after I got her home.]

Ah, yes!! At least that's my vote!!

She's so pretty, Chanda.

Lucky C Farms Robby, per the AMHA is a palomino.  Did the old owner file a stud report for you?

Of course Sophia is also registered in AMHA as a solid palomino and was brought permanent at 33.75", but never DNA tested. AMHR has her as a grey mare, again at 33.75".  Sophia is showing that mom was also a registered palomino, too.  Must have a greying gene in there somewhere.

Gotta love the colors horses are registered -- so far from the truth sometimes.  Her daddy, Robby, do you know whether he is truly a palomino?  He is out of a solid cremello mare from a bay stallion, and registered palomino at 30.50"  A little guy!

This is exciting!  Looks like you'll have some foaling to do this spring!  And we'll enjoy watching!!

As far as I know stud report has been filed, but haven't received my breeding cert. Yet.
As far as I know Robby was palomino.
When I transferred, I thought I fixed her height, she's definitely over 34".
Her maternal grandmother or maybe it's great grand is Blue Boy bred, so that's where the grey comes from, guessing color was never updated when turned.  I didn't know she was A papered, so good to know she was initially palomino, if her foal color was guessed right.

Here's what I got back from the seller when I asked about stallion certi

Hi Chanda.  I sure hope she is pregnant.  That would be great!!  I will get you a breeders certificate.  If she caught the first time the stud bred her she will be due about the middle of March.  But she showed heat again two more times while running with him at Liz's place so not really sure what went on with her.  I have read they can show heat and still be pregnant so I don't really know what to think about her.  She ran with him and the herd then from the 10th of May until 8/1.

Sorry.  Had to go to the book. My head is not always reliable:):). She went to the pasture with the herd and the stud on June 24th.

Asking to find out if she was actually first turned out on June 24th, as that would have a better foaling time than early May turn out for up here.

And, the response:

I bred her at my place on April 23.  He bred her twice that day and the next day she ate his lunch:):). So I thought he had got her as she was going out.  The stud went out to Liz's on May 1 but I have another stud I used to check her back.  She never showed heat again at my place so I sent her out to Liz's in June just to run out for a while.  I totally thought she was bred cause she never showed heat again at my place.

There is a chance that an April heat is a transitional heat in northern Montana, and I sure hope it was, cause that's too early for foaling here.  [Her seller is down on the river bottom, so they can have milder weather than we do in winter.]

Dang, I hope she didn't take on April 23, that would put her 300 days on Feb 16, 2018, way too early to foal around here.  [Although, sometimes February is nicer than March.]  330 days would be March 19, 2018 (a little better).
She had two foals previously, and they were 10 months apart, so it looks like she might go only 10 months; but those were later in the season foals, I've seen them go a bit longer with early season foals in cold climates.

I hope she took for you too and at the latter date

Not new, but I got Sophia added to my website, and I used one of the sellers pictures.

With help, I found information on her two foals...  She has a palomino filly by a sorrel pinto stallion; and a buckskin filly by a buckskin stallion.   If I'm able to get pictures, I'll share, but don't hold your breath.

So she is a true palomino with a cream gene!!!  The greying is certainly coming from the Blue Boy influence, as I had a "grey" mare that was a true palomino with a greying gene -- which you know I had to sell, since appaloosa breeders don't want greying in their herd.  Nothing worse than producing a beautiful SPOTTED baby that turns grey and looses it's spots.

I'm excited for you!  If she's exposed to a silver black tobiano, you may actually produce your perfect Buckskin (or buckskin pinto). And then there is a possibility she won't throw the greying gene, although silver could be in the mix AND the cream gene!  What fun predicting this color baby will be!!

Pinto breeders aren't thrilled with Grey's, either.
She'd have to have a dominant agouti gene to produce buckskin, and I'm not sure she has any bays in her background, but it's possible.  I'd take a palomino without grey.

Did a boobie check today?  Hard to find for all the hair, she wasn't thrilled, but tolerated the invasion very well.
No pictures, didn't get the camera outside.  [Busy inside doing bookwork stuff, still more to do plus inventory for my little business.]

Boobie check sounds good, I'm glad she let you check.

As to bays in her pedigree, here it is, and I only see two -- one on topside (paternal grandfather) one on bottom 5 generations back.  But she did produce a buckskin foal, you said, but from a buckskin stud, which is the highest likelihood of that cross.  We'll agree to take a healthy palomino with no grey -- and cross fingers for a buckskin with no grey -- buckskin being one of the 4 most likely with black x palomino (taking out the tobiano and grey genes).   ;pray ;pray

I have a pic of the foal's sire, he's a Glenn's General Patton son.  His name is WF Pattons Steel Encore.
I also have my breeding certificate, I sure hope I get to use it.

I agree Diane. I like those tippy ears, large eyes and big fine nostrils. Does he have any Blue Boy back in there? Also, thanks for posting the pedigree. I LOVE reading pedigrees! 😁😁

Chanda, I really like this mare. (Seeing her pedigree tells me why.). If she does have a foal, will it be a keeper?

I'm not sure if I'd keep her foal, depends on what she has.   If a filly, she'd likely be too small for Topper, and Che` is senior and has problems getting the job done (I'm going to try hand breeding, Baybe again, as he can't catch her on his own - he was fertile 10 years ago, he has a 9 year old daughter, but a lot can happen in that time).   I might actually be able to sell a tiny colt, but maybe keep it to cross on Topper's daughters, if he has more.   Oh, who am I kidding, I can't seem to let any of them go.  Time will tell, I just don't know.   For now, we'll just pray for a healthy foal on the ground, and make decisions after that.

She's a beautiful mare!!
I know a lot of breeders don't like Gray, for obvious reasons, but honestly I love grays, they are so beautiful once they change.!!

She's a beautiful mare!!
I know a lot of breeders don't like Gray, for obvious reasons, but honestly I love grays, they are so beautiful once they change.!!

thank you.
I didn't set out to find a grey, but she found me, and we're still working on that "click", but I think we are getting along better than she got along at her last home.   [She was at her breeder's for most of her life, so a bit of upheaval the last couple years, but she seems to be settling here quite nicely.]

And, thank you for the pedigree, Diane.

Hahahaha, I laughed at the first line. And by the "who am I kidding" I thought "Funny cause its true" ( same for me too )

Foal heat is usually 7-10 post foaling, right?

trying to figure what is normal for Sophia, she only has two registered foals, she may have had more, but her breeder doesn't always register colts (fillies are all registered).
She had a filly 6-3-2011 and a filly 5-10-2012, that's 342 days apart.   So, if she came into heat 7 days after foaling, that would be 335 days gestation, if it was 10 days after foaling, it would be 332 days ( a little shorter to account for length of cycle).
If all this math is right, and she happened to take on that April 24th breeding day, 332 days would be March 22 (a bit better than when I did the math wrong).   If she took at the later date (first turn out on pasture was June 24), that would be like 2 months later.
I won't panic as much about a possible 10-month foal with our crappy weather.  Not that we can't be crappy the end of March, but it's 30 days closer to spring, so every day helps.

Nothing new to report.  Seems to be about the same.  Good appetite, sometimes she'll leave a little of her morning alfalfa pellets, but they are always gone by evening meal; evening meal is a soaked mix of beet pulp, alfalfa pellets and timothy pellets, she eats all of that.   No milk bar started that I can tell.    She's fairly agreeable to me checking her over, as long as I don't try to catch her.

I'm trying.  I just hope winter breaks before she foals, as I don't really have a cold weather location for foaling.   Her single early breed date puts her 330 days the end of March, then her next possible breed date is two months later.

Has anyone had a mare that always has a relaxed tail?  Sophia doesn't flip her tail or clamp it when a lift it or move it.   Her girlie parts are still tight, but she maybe has just the smallest start of an udder (like maybe double A).

I had a mare like that, but she was a pocket pet, and let you do anything you wanted to her.  So, no matter what you did, she just went with the flow with no "fighting" back.

But I didn't think your girl was quite as trusting as that.  But, heck, sounds like she's moved along very well in letting you work with her.

She didn't care for her boobie check today, nothing too bad, just a stomp and an ear flick.   She seems fairly relaxed here, although still a bit aloof.

Not liking her booby checks at breakfast.  Feels like she's starting to shop.  If I can remember a camera, I'll see if I can get a picture, but don't know how agreeable she'll be.
I just hope she waits for nicer weather, we have lots of snow everywhere and are about to start calving, so the calving barn will be full.   Not sure how happy Tilly and Baby would be with a new room mate, but could make her a stall in the corner of their shelter if need be (if I could figure out a way to get her in there, lots of drifts blocking everything).   Could clean out the hay stall, but it's small and has a bad draft in a corner (going to get that fixed this summer, if I don't forget again).

I don't think she's going to heed our wishes, and I'm going to be figuring out an early spring foaling box.  Never in my life would I have guessed a mare would take on a one day cover when you are planning to breed (accidents always come with "just once").
She is less thrilled with booby check, but she cocked a leg when I was checking under her tail, and she's been shopping.  I don't think she'd be very willing for a picture, but if I can remember the camera, I'll try.

Well, I have a few options for enclosed foaling area, although none would be "warm", just under cover.    Move in with Baybe and Tilly, and fence off a corner of their shelter.   dig the snow out of her shelter, and figure out a way to block the wind from blowing in.   Move over to one of the shelters at the gelding pen, but I'd have to figure out a way to separate all the boys for meals.    Move her into the foaling stall in the mare barn (I have two stalls with a removable divider, so would have to figure where to feed two mares).

Yeah....I laughed pretty hard when I saw this last week!!  I know she hasn't cooperated much in the booby check department, but do you thing she has grown to at least an A cup?  Or possibly a B??  LOL  For my own selfish reasons, I'm particularly drawn to watching this mare.  I check in everyday, even if I don't comment.  Hopefully  ;pray  she's developing slowly yet steadily and is still another 3-4 weeks out, so you don't have to deliver in the midst of winter's last gasp.

We don't fully jump into spring until like Mother's Day, that's when it stays warm enough at night consistently, so you can transplant flowers, safely.
I'd say Sophia may have jumped to A cup, maybe even B.  I need to dig out her barn door, and of course the wind is screaming around blowing and drifting the snow

Shayne broke a power pole today moving snow, clipped the guide wire and the pole snapped; so, we were without power for a few hours, called and they came right away to fix it (good thing Shayne had already opened the driveway before clipping the pole) and I still didn't get a picture of Sophia.   I did get 3 horses trimmed and I stuffed Sophia's stall with hay.  Tomorrow, I'll try to get her stall door cleared of snow.

Pretty sure it's the first time I've ever seen wax, I'll go check her after supper and see where we are.  Good thing I've got my headlamp, as my horse barn doesn't have power.  I added more hay to her shelter, but we still have a pile of snow out there.  She's a bit nervous, the heifers running in for their oats got her all excited tonight.

Just checked her 15 minutes ago or so, she was laying down and jumped up when I came around the corner.  Once she realized it was me she settled down.  A little agitated, but not bad.   She laid back down as I left the barn area.   I'm going to go back out shortly, but needed to come in and change into my lined jeans, just in case I need to stay out there longer than for just a check.    While perhaps not ideal, we are around 30 above, and no wind.  Supposed to snow tomorrow, so barometric pressure is changing.

Chanda says she's a Oreo Cookie -- Black at both ends and white in the middle!!  Maybe a sock in the back -- but no light in the barn, so hard to tell.

No pictures until daylight!!!  Mom and baby seem to be doing well.  Chanda is waiting to see baby nurse, but headlamp is dying.  PRAY for baby to nurse.  Temperature is only 30 degrees!!!

Chanda will post more in the morning.

Thank you, Diane.
Sophia laid down, and seemed annoyed with me being their, so I came to the house.  I didn't see baby nurse, yet, but she's feisty, so imagine it won't take too long for her to figure it out.    With out lights out there, I think I'll go for early rising and head back to the barn first thing.
We have an oreo cookie, pretty sure filly.  I have no lights in my barn, so by flashlight I can't tell if black or silver black.
[Pretty sure mom is a red-base grey (I know she is grey, but pretty sure base is red, might be palomino).  Sire is a silver black tobiano.]

She might be a little bit cold, but my fleece blankets are too big and I don't know if Sophia would be too receptive to putting a blanket on her baby.   She's doing a good job of giving me stink eye, everytime I come near, even if I'm bringing her some food.   [Just mushy food for today.]   Gotta see about getting a dose of ivermectin in Sophia some time today.
Title: Re: Sophia - 2018

Got a blanket on her, and Sophia's tolerating it, but still giving me stink eye.   Also gave Sophia her ivermectin.    After getting the blanket on, the little one finally laid down and took a good nap, when she woke up I finally saw her drink (and also got hands on and could feel her swallowing.   Sophia has so much milk it sometimes streams out of the other nipple when baby is latched onto one of them.

Took her blanket it off a little bit ago, I'll put it back on before nightfall.
spent a bit of this morning and afternoon, digging the snow out of Sophia's paddock, so hopefully these slightly warmer temps will get to work melting some of the snow, so they can go back in the paddock and things can go back to normal.   The other girls are shut out of the barn, so Sophia can have alone time with her filly; makes it hard to do supplements, when I can't separate.

Thanks, Anna.   I had no idea that waxing would be like it was; I don't think any of my other minis waxed, and if they did, I totally missed the signs.

She's a bit of a sleeper but I'm guessing the chilly temps don't help.  She seems ot be a pretty good eater, and Sophia has plenty to go around (sometimes squirting out of the nipple the foal isn't latched on).   going to have to dig in the totes and see if I can find another small blanket.  The fleece blankets I have are too big for her.

It's almost killing me not to be out there more, but between weather (not horrible, but chilly) and Mom not wanting me there too much, I'm staying away for the most part.   I switch blankets twice a day, fleecy during day, slightly heavier blanket at night and feed Sophia, that seems like about all she wants for interaction right now.

I have no girly names for this little one.
Dam is Lucky Harts Simply Sophia
Sire is WF Pattons Steel Encore

My prefix is "Hell Coulee"  much to the chagrin of the registry.   ;)   [They argue with me about using about every other foal.  My address is Hell Creek road, we live in Hell Coulee.  deal with it.]

I'd kind of like to put the "simply" in the name, if I can.

Over the years...   Bridgette, my Aussie, started it all.  Bonny, Blue, B2, Bob, Boots, Baybe, Bliss.   Not all my animals have B names, just seem to be a lot in my life.

Congratulations on a lovely filly Chanda!  I do hope that the fact the calendar says "Spring!!" will actually begin in your part of the world.

I have a few name suggestions:

Hell Coulee Simply Be Silver (barn name Bess)
Hell Coulee Simply Be Blessed (barn name BeBe)
Hell Coulee Simply Be Cool (barn name Becca) in honor of her pre-Spring birth
Hell Coulee She's Simply Steel (barn name Sissy?)

Borrowing from Diane:

Hell Coulee Simply Silver Encore (barn name.....I don't know....Inky?? LOL)

Guess that's all for now. I'm just hoping that between calving, foaling and mud that you and the family stay well and healthy.

Lots of names to think about now.  Might make it harder rather than easier.

cute as heck, but Sophia still giving me stink eye, so I'm only changing her blanket twice a day and making sure she's eating.  Legs are strengthening, but still rather cow hocked at the moment.

We have snow storm, started last night/early morning, and it's coming from a direction that the wind is blowing the snow into my shelters.   I had freshly bedded Sophia's paddock shelter in preparation of moving htem back in, but it's covered in snow now.   The barn is flooding, so there is standing water in the barn, luckily there is enough bedding in the foaling stall to keep Sophia and baby high and dry, but might need another layer in there.    It's not terribly cold, so this new snow will probably start melting almost immediately.
Today is a sewing day in town for quilt guild, I had planned to go and work on the tree skirts, but that isn't happening now.  I can do the work at home, it's just easier when I can use the tables at the Senior's Center where we meet.      We need some groceries, and a new tv, so may run to town tomorrow for those items; some places are closed on Saturday, but the most important items are from stores that will be open tomorrow.   Yesterday, our tv decided it no longer would turn on; luckily, we still have my little 19" tv, so we still have the noise box, but man it's hard to watch after using a 40" tv for nearly a decade.

I think you deserve a day that in "paradise".  Please Lord, stop the snow storms!   ;pray ;pray  Praying that baby and momma stay high and dry, and that you get some rest!  You must be stressed and weary, and I hope you can get some rest tonight, and over the weekend.

No sewing day, but ended up running to town for groceries, calving meds at the vet, wood pellets (plain stove pellets, but they work well under bedding in stalls to soak up slop), a bag of shavings for same, machinery filters and that elusive new tv.

I'm leaning towards Belle as foal name, as I've tried a few names on for size and she comes closer when I saw Belle, and is indifferent or turns the other way when I say other names.

You have done so well Chanda with the weather you have been dealt with over the last month . Although you get the stink eye from Sophia , I'm sure she is very great full to have you around trying to keep them both as warm as possible .

Enjoy the new telly , hope there's something decent on so you can kick back and put your feet up and relax a bit tonight .

Hope the worst of the weathers over for u  ;pray

We bought the demo model as it was the last one in the size we needed, we ended up with the wrong remote, so can't use the tv.  Holy crap, what a day.   The remote will turn the tv on and off (we knew that much at the store), but basically none of the other buttons function, so we can't watch tv, two plus hours of our night down the drain with having to hang it on the wall so install bracket to do so (only way it would fit the space we have).   Shayne is livid and I'm beyond annoyed.  I don't want to turn around and drive back 65 miels tomorrow for a stupid tv remote.   can't figure out any way to just get the tv to talk to the satellite box.

hooked the little tv back up, so we at least have noise box.
Called the store first thing this morning, like right as they opened.  I think I talked to the guy that sold us the tv, but as I didn't have a name, and don't recall what he said, I'm not sure.  Anyway, he said he'd hunt up the remote, and if he can't find the one that goes with the tv, he'll personally buy a universal remote and mail it out.  [At first he said, just come on in, then I said we live in the country, and I'm not driving 65 miles for a remote, then he said he'd mail it.  And, I didn't expect him to say he'd buy the remote if needed, heck, I'd pay the postage, we just want the remote without driving 65 miles.]
Still don't understand how a different brands remote could/would turn on this tv and work the volume control, but nothing else; realistically it shouldn't work anything on a different brand.  And, I'll return the wrong remote next time I go to town.
So glad we don't have forum police telling us we can't discuss anything but mares and foaling in our group.  :)

Dang Chanda...winter still has you in it's claws and you're not catching a break. I agree on the forum 👮 police, it makes it much more personal for me.  I feel like I really get to know my forum friends. 😊😊

Here's another name. Hell Coullee Simply Silverbelle. Then Belle your barn name. Hopefully she and mama are content with things the way they are. Also, that they stay healthy.

I hope the evil, late season 'lizard doesn't stick around for long, and melts away into the plains to support great haymaking.

I probably complain too much, I live in Montana, we have two seasons: winter and not winter, and winter lasts 6-8 months.  We don't plant outdoor plants til Mother's Day (I think seeds can go in sooner, but transplants are Mother's Day).    I'll take my cold and snow, and warm areas can keep their icky bugs, creepy spiders, and nasty snakes (we only get garter snakes and bull snakes, no toxic spiders (or insects or lizards).

Got the girls outside for a little bit while I cleaned the foaling stall, not an easy task with the water under the bedding, but it's clean for today.  Need to put a bit more bedding in, which is also part of Sophia's daily hay.
Got a couples of the baby, still haven't decided on name.

Absolutely right!  That's why we are all here for each other.  You don't complain, but sometimes you just need to vent, and that's why I love it here, too.

And WHAT A PRETTY LITTLE BELLE IN HER SPECIAL COAT!!  She is just precious, and gotta love her sticking out her tongue.  Between that and Sophia giving you the "stink eye"  I think I'd spend my time laughing at them!  She's REALLY pretty!

Even though it's small at least we have that little 19" tv for noise factor.

The temps aren't bad, but the snow and mud are plenty, so I'm inside; but Sophia and  baby are outside, I put down some hay for dry bedding, and let the girls out in the run for some fresh air and sunshine.
I'm inside working on tree skirts.  Have one pinned together ready for quilting and getting ready to pin the second one.

Two pinned, will do the other two tomorrow, I think I have enough pins.
Temps are supposed to bottom out later in the week.  And, I'll probably have to go to town, as we're going to need more milk replacer soon, since I have two on a bottle right now (I try to save a little bit at the end of the year, so I have enough for a few days at the start of calving, so we have time to buy more if needed, hate to buy a full bag if we don't have a need, it's so darn expensive).   Going to wait til at least Wednesday, as that's when the feed store should have their truck come, so alfalfa pellets should come then.

Instead of cleaning and rebedding the foaling stall, I moved Sophia and baby back into Sophia's paddock.  The shelter had already been rebidded, and much of the snow had melted, there is still some ice under the old hay and poop, but she has room to move now.   Hopefully, the cold snap coming won't cause a problem.

Usually only a week or two in the 90s, otherwise in the 80s in summer, rare occasion it'll get over 100.  [Sorry don't know conversion.]

I was in a rush, so didn't plug it in to a on-line converter.   We are taking a dip later this week, then hopefully a rise will start; but spring temps first, please; so 60-70s would be just fine.

OMG!  Took half an hour to figure out how to get the stupid tv out of store demo mode.  Hopefully, that will get rid of all the pop-ups.   Went to town today, and picked up the remote, they forgot to send it out, hadn't even gone to the electronics section and looked for it, as the remote was on the shelf with the other tvs.   They did give us a $5 gift card for our troubles (the gal that checked me out, thought it should have been $10).
Sophia and baby are doing well in the outside paddock.  baby already trying to eat mom's feed.
Gotta pick a name.  Not anything too close to baby, since I already have a Baybe.    Leaning towards Belle, but haven't decided.

Great you got the remote , I really hope you get some chill out time and can put your feet up and watch something over the weekend :)

They should have reimbursed you for the petrol/ gas and brought you lunch, seeing you had to go all the way back in there cause of their error.

happy Easter :)

We pay-per-viewed the new Jumanji.  It was decent.
[It was partially our fault we ended up with the wrong remote, since the one we picked up did turn the tv on and off.  just glad it's set now.  Although, the volume control doesn't have a big range; so, we might have to get a sound bar (I think that's what it's called), but not anytime soon.

I agree Holly, that does paint an image, doesn't it?

Chanda, are you still dressed in Carhartt overalls or has it warmed up enough to drop a layer?  How do you balance her needing a blanket against keeping it clean? Has it started staying close to or over freezing at night yet?

I hope you're making it through calving season with not too much fuss.  What I mean is, just every day work that leaves you feeling tired and fulfilled, without anything making you want to scream and forehead slap in frustration.

Mostly been wearing my fleece lined jeans, but did need coveralls the other day.
When it's been so cold, she's just been wearing her blanket, dirty or not.  I ordered her another blanket, two days ago, I should have done it sooner, but I thought spring was going to come.
So far, mostly due to wear, there is some forehead slapping moments.

Exactly what I'd do.  Sometimes cleanliness is not as important as warmth.  Don't think she even notices!

I've not introduced Sophia and Belle to the herd, and Belle is now over 4 months old.  I know, not the norm, but Bliss is such a snot towards Sophia through the fence, that I haven't wanted to risk it.   Now that Belle is over 4 months old, do you think it would be safer to introduce them in a large area?     It would be so much easier if they could all go out on the same pasture space, even if there isn't much grass left to graze.

I think it's Sophia she doesn't like.  Belle rolled under the fence a month or so ago, and was in with the other mares, and Bliss didn't care; but she sure gives stink eye to Sophia.  Probably because Sophia won't take her crap, she's still like a toddle pushing buttons, she's constantly annoying the mares, but they just take it.

Tried them together this morning, still no go with Bliss, so Sophia doesn't want her anywhere near her or her bay, and Bliss can't take a hint.   Got Bliss out, and put Bonnie out with Sophia; they went their separate ways and that was that.   So, I'll do mixed trials and see who fits, so Belle gets some time with horses other than her mom; but no Bliss for the time being.
