Title: Record weather all over the world
Post by: Silver City Heritage Farm on January 09, 2018, 07:29:39 AM
This last week has been......trying, to say the least. Here in NC we've had a run of 6-7 days of temps that didn't get above freezing, with nights in the single digits.

I had no idea that we were in for this, until 24 hours before. Paula had come to visit, and we took a trip down the road to the store. On the way home, the roads had been brined. (For those who don't know what brining is, it's a saltwater mix that helps to keep the roads from icing over. They spray it on.) Paula checked the weather station on her phone and SURPRISE, winter storm warning.

Hoke County ended up with 5 inches of snow. 😱😱😱 High temps have been around 20 Fahrenheit until yesterday. No water in one trailer since last Monday. The small trailer without water twice. The first time was very frustrating, because I'd left the faucets on and *someone* (read niece) thought only the hot water needed to stay on. Since this isn't the first time I've had to defrost pipes this year because of people changing how I had faucets running, I was more than a bit irritated. Matter of fact, I said "F***, f***, f*** a duck" more than a few times. The pipe did burst, HOWEVER, the blessings were that it separated from the connection and that the lines are on the south side. Thank you Nature for the sun warming up the lines enough to defrost in spite of a 17 degree Fahrenheit high here that day.

The second time they froze, the trickle had been turned down. Fortunately, it was yesterday when the high was 40 Fahrenheit. It was my husband's day off, and we had to be off the property most of the day. We're going to have hellacious water and electric bills this month.

I saw my neighbor at Walmart Sunday. He's in a house, and had been without water since Monday as well. I felt sorry for hm, and sent a prayer that his water lines don't burst.

This weather broke/tied (depending on location) a 30 year record of consecutive days with highs below freezing. Many cities had broken water mains, and boil water directives. So all in all, we've been blessed.

We're all well and health. All animals are, too. I'll update with crazy chicken stories later. Until then, here are a couple of pictures:

Sorry you've been hit with such weather.  I remember it well having lived in Lake Placid, New York, for many years where in February the temps were below freezing for most of the month without the wind chill and in the -20's+ with the wind chill.  Frozen pipes a "remembered" thing in my past.

Praying all turns out well for you, and hopefully temperatures will rise.  Where I live here in Florida, it's been in the 30's overnight, and after last week with its cold temps we're back to getting to 60-70's during the day and 50's at night, but the end of the week will have us back in the 30's at night.  For most Floridian's this is horrid, but I enjoy the colder weather when it comes to Florida.

Praying for all who live in these frigid areas up north, that you and your animals make it through these difficult times.   ;pray ;pray

Thank you Diane, I've been wondering how it's been there. Having grown up in Minnesota and the mountains of Idaho, this isn't "real" winter. However, any time I'm caught unprepared I feel like a dork.

I saw on the news last night that Sydney Australia had a record high of 117 Fahrenheit. It's supposed to *ahem* cool off today, and only be 105 Fahrenheit. I wonder how it is at Ryan's and Carly Rae's?

In all honesty, it's just bad because we're still in such a primitive setting. The house is still being rehabbed. We're still in the travel trailers. "Something else" always ends up being a higher priority. So I never really feel prepared.

Also, I'd not lived in the south as an adult. Nor had I ever owned my own property. So there's been quite a learning curve. I've loved every minute of it!! My impression though, is that weather patterns are becoming much more extreme and volatile. Who ever heard of a "bomb cyclone" before?!

Poor Boston....they had record high tides during a blizzard. Images I have etched in my mind are ice flows up to the tops of tire rims. Firefighters hauling rubber rafts to rescue flood victims while the blizzard swirled around them. Backhoes with slushy water halfway up their tires, lifting people off the roofs of their flooded homes in their bucket scoops.  ;pray ;pray

This is the longest snow has stayed on the ground since I arrived here in 2007. I guess we'll see how many more times it snows this winter.

I'm also interested to see what happens to our friends Down Under. Seems to me that they're feeling the most obvious effects of global warming.

Time to take the girl in to to her 2 hour delayed school. More updates later!

I have been watching the news and seeing the record snow falls. I am so sorry to read that you have suffered so much damage to pipes etc.

Its been very hot here , Sydney is on the middle of the east coast. Carly is North or Sydney and I am south. It reached 43.9 , which is one of the hottest days I can remember on record. I stayed indoors for most of the day. I went outside every 2 hours to do a check on the horses and empty water troughs and refill them. I have Binoculars upstairs so I can spy on the horses when I need to .

Hows the snow now Julie ? Please say hi to Paula for me :)

Take Care

I'm so over winter, and it's barely begun.  I know we need the moisture, but the extreme cold can stuff it.

I also hate winter. I am luck as it doesn't snow. I think then I would have something to really complain about.

We had an overnight low of 29 , so not much sleep here !!

Ryan, the last of the snow melted off my place by Tuesday mid-morning. Then we had mild, then a couple of days 68-70 Fahrenheit, now wintry temperatures again. A couple of folks have been complaining about the cold. I've very much tried not to, for a couple of reasons. First, we NEED winter. Plants and trees need to rest. It helps keep undesirable bugs down. Some critters and plants need winter to complete their life cycles. Second, winter is in it's allocated calendar timeframe...21 December to 21 March. So who am I to complain?? 😝😝😝

Here are some pictures (this is the 5-6 inches we received in 5 hours:)
