Title: Tinkerbell's foaling thread
Post by: Ellesan on May 04, 2016, 08:47:09 PM
Tinkerbell is 310 days today! Can't believe how much her udder changed when I was gone over a long weekend. She's letting me touch her udder too, which is so different than a few months ago. I'm super excited but also getting a little nervous after hearing so many sad foaling stories this year....

Diane, I'm trying to post pics but it says they are too big. I was able to post them on the other site, does this one have a smaller allowable size? Thanks!

Hi Ellesan,
Try posting your pics again .... I've increased the filesize limit.
The restrictions are shown under the "browse" button where you attach files.
If you still have trouble email me the pictures and I'll see what I can do.

Hmmm, that's strange.
Send them to me at webmaster@castlerockminiatures.com and I'll see if I can't figure out what the trouble is.

She is just beautiful!! And such a pretty udder. She is looking very good, with baby still laying a bit wide, which is just fine! She is looking so good, and elongating nicely.

Great pictures, by the way!  Thanks Marty!

Marty, thanks for posting these!

Thanks Diane!! I can't believe how much her udder has changed in a week. She's even letting me touch all over. A month ago she would not let me do that.  Friday baby was kicking up a storm and I could see it--so exciting.

She's still acting normal and feeling
Good. I'm wondering if she will go to her due date--june 4th??

She's looking very good, and we'll be watching for changes as the week passes. She is such a pretty girl!  So, what color is the daddy? Just wondering what we can look forward to.

Right now, she's still a bit wide, so watch for rolling, as she'll be working to line this little one up, and will start looking more slab-sided as she gets closer. And baby will stop moving around as she runs out of room.  LOL

Keep us posted!! Very exciting!

I'm emailing some pics to Marty. Tink is doing well, no signs of distress, she is happy and sweet. Clear milk started yesterday, and more today but not white yet. Foal alert is in and we are patiently waiting. I'm so happy she's being watched 24/7, a lot of relief for when I am at work!!

You can always send them to me too, at dcwolcott@tnni.net and I can easily resize them and post them for you.  I work during the day, but I do check in (when no one is looking!!  LOL)

Can't wait to see the new pictures!!

Is she on a cam where we can watch her?  I'd love to watch, too!!

She is so pretty!!!!  Baby still riding a bit wide, but she's looking very good!!  Since she's filling an udder for you, look for the filling of the nipples too.  They are a bit flat, but since she's being so good in getting an udder, I'd check for nipple filling as a sign.

Has she lost her mucous plug yet?

I'm sorry we can't watch, but glad someone is always watching for you.  That's just perfect, and must be a big relief!

Yes I agree Diane, she still needs to get baby lined up but she seems to have started shopping and her udder is filling up nicely. Not long to go now. :)

Diane, I sent you more pics from yesterday

Thanks everyone, super excited!!!!!

Yesterday she was  leaking milk, waxing, and stopped grazing to walk back to her stall (definitely not normal for her) Vet thought she might go last night but nope--sleepless night for me!!!

You aren't blurry-eyed, enough, yet; when you need six cups of coffee and toothpicks to keep your eyes open, then she'll go, or when you are on a pee break.

Title: Re: Tinkerbell's foaling thread

I would almost bet that if it's going to be tonight, she'll be doing some rolling to get that little one lined up more.  She's still carrying a bit wide -- think that the "delivery" position is baby's spine lined up with momma's spine.  In that position, the momma can almost look NOT pregnant.  So, I won't be surprised if she starts doing some rolling to get this little one more lined up in the "GO" position.

She's looking great!  And she's such a delicate, pretty color!  I can't wait to see what color this little one turns out to be!!

She does have that "forward-of-center" going on, so for sure, I'd be keeping a very close eye on her!

Thank you all for the wonderful support and advice!! It's a boy!!  Tinkerbell gave birth to a beautiful buckskin dun around 7pm tonight. Vet said she went quick and he only had to help break the sac, so I missed out on the birth but got to see first steps. ❤️ His name is Dreamlands Little Scout. He is so sweet and curious already. I'm in love😍😍😍😍

I'll send pics to Diane!

Yes and no...my barn is super busy and I want to protect them. I think I am going to put a lock on the door to prevent people from going in. I will give the barn manager a key if there is an emergency. What do you all think? Have any of you had to handle this at a large barn where everyone will want to see/touch the foal?

Sorry I'm not much help with this one.  I've always had my own barn on my own property, and haven't had to board before.  But I think it's a good idea to have them secured for a while, so nothing can happen to the delightful little one!  Keeping him safe in these early days is very important, and will keep momma's stress level down -- which is very important for her milk production and overall well being!

Good choice!

Thanks so much!! He actually needed a plasma transfusion since his IgG levels never went over 400, but he got that last night and his levels are great today so I will be bringing them home!! I'm off to go get the stall ready! I'll be posting all other updates on the new thread. Thanks again for all of the help, advice, knowledge and support guys, especially Diane! 👏😊👍🐴❤️🎉

You might try putting up a sign on her stall to the effect of "sshhh!  Mom and baby bonding, do not disturb".   Hopefully, you have adults in your barn, or perhaps I should say mature people; I was boarding my AQHA mare when she was pregnant with her first foal, she went nearly a year, there was a barn know-it-all that didn't think she should lay down to rest as much as she did, so took it upon herself to go in her pen and get her up whenever she was down.    I changed boarding facilities not long after the foaling, as this one didn't really have facilities for a foal, it was mostly a mixed pasture situation with a couple paddocks (I only had access to a paddock short term, as renter had her horse out for training and would have been back fairly soon).  The new facility worked great, as there were only a few boarders and the owner raised quarter horses, so my mare and baby were pretty much left alone.

Yes I agree Diane, you are a great owner and an inspiration to any newbies coming here for help. This is what breeding is all about, enjoying the fun yet taking responsibility for your mare and baby.
I would try and give them some quiet and alone time to bond so yes, I would lock them away for a few days. Just make sure there is a key nearby in case there is an emergency and they need to be moved in a hurry.

Well, especially since is IGg levels were low, I'd recommend that others not handle him much, if at all.  Especially if you aren't there.  I had to think about this long and hard - I know that I've had foals I wanted EVERYONE to leave alone - due to the foal/mare having a rough time at birth OR due to the mare being a first timer and not knowing if she'd be OK with anyone entering her stall/pen OR due to knowing the mare was bad about having her foal handled and not wanting others to get hurt and possibly have a law suit on my hands...

Really driven home by Chanda's statement.  I can't even imagine someone doing that!  But that's like boarders constantly giving your ponies/minis treats - even when there are notes posted to not do so (could be diet, could be biting - and doesn't matter - no one should be feeding horse/ponies that aren't theirs UNLESS they ask).

I'm very glad that you are going to be moving them home.  Besides - then you'll have all the fun!
