Amazing Lil guy!! Super happy for you!

Louie is hilarious. He has goldie wrapped around his little hoof. He literally makes her move to him (why should he have to go to her?!) and if she's not giving him
Enough attention he will bite her face and buck at her. He very much the entitled son 😂

Vet check up tomorrow (throwing money to the wind some may say but hey ho it's my money to throw) will let you know how it goes.

Nothing wrong with getting a vet check!  Always better to be safe than sorry.

That is such a cute story about him.  These are "entitled" times!!   Guess it's just not the 2 legged kids!

Absolutely second the Vet check :)

Vet check all went well. His joints are all fine, eyes and gums all good and his little umbilical and man bits good, no temps and very healthy little colt. Vet was in love, and said when the next one comes she MUST be requested for the foal check lol (she hugged charm, and felt movement too so im not crazy, there is something in there, but just have to figure out when its coming now lol)

I have left a night light on since Louie was born, but left it off tonight. Poor Lou is a bit put out! He walked into the wall (and got a telling off from mum for being stupid and headbutted away from it) and can't see what end of mum is what lol

How do these things ever survive in the wild where there are trees and rocks all over the place and mum is always moving or suddenly running away from dragons?!

Makes you wonder for sure!   Especially being flight animals!  But the good Lord watches over all of us, no matter how "smart" we are! LOL

They do develop "night eyes" - but it takes being in the dark to learn to adjust and it does take time, LOL.

I'm pretty sure they also develop "body radar" with their bodies learning where things are and they do get hurt sometimes in the dark if running in new areas.  That's why I always try to introduce new items in the pasture or a new pasture completely during the daylight with plenty of time for them to get used to moving around.

That said, I managed to not close a panel properly the other day when got a hay delivery.  I had two mares out.  One with her foal still in the pen (pretty upset - understandably), the other not having foaled yet.  They got out in the dark and the mare that hasn't foaled yet must have run into something.  The swelling is going down with cold hosing 3x daily & saline flushes several times while i'm out there.  No injury appears to be to the eye - just above it...

Ive been spoiled by Meadow, who never had a single issue in her life yet.

Louie loves the vet. He was lame, and figured it was just a stone the farrier got out but best to get checked anyway. Now he has really bad scours (runny poo) vet thinks it might be rotavirus. Hes on probiotic, and electrolytes. I have to try and get fluids into him if i can just to top him up - he is still eating, suckling and no temp so all good signs i suppose. Just have to keep a close eye.

A friends foal dropped dead a few days ago unexpectidly, and another friends horse is very sick with a chest infection type thing, both were at the show i was at with meadow so im terrified meadow or i have picked up something and brought it back, but Meadow is fine.

I believe he had a harder poo last night. He had some poo on his bum at 1am when I looked (after a bath) and in the morning that was rock hard and no fresh stuff - there was a tiny poo in the corner I believe was his.

So gonna stick with the treatment for another few days and just keep a close eye.

Hey long time no talk. There’s no updates really as everyone’s been out to rough off for winter!

This week though I’m starting the weaning process and not sure how to tackle it. As you know I have a split stable so I’ve over the last few months been feeding Lou separate but he takes a few bites then starts to stress and look over the door and had that look of (how do I tackle this) he’s quite a mummy’s boy and generally not seen to far from her. So! Here’s options;

1) try this method anyway and see how it goes by just letting him get on with it and learn he can’t get over
2) go cold turkey and have mum in next stable and uncle thriller in the split stable
3) have Lou in separate stable with uncle thriller so he’s fully able to touch (but comes with risks if they bicker, which they don’t do in the field)
4) have Lou and thriller in the field an mum in for a few days but comes with risk of him attempting to jump fences and find mum

Was all so easy with meadow she just did it! I’ve been totally spoiled by her lol

Recent photo though.

He's still so cute!

I always did the weaning cold turkey, but I always had a buddy weaning at the same time to keep the little one happy and calm.  So, I know you'll come up with the right plan!

I think Anna let them wean themselves out in pasture.  Not sure if I'm remembering that correctly, but hopefully she'll chime in here with her considerable knowledge!

Id love to wean naturally in the paddock, but its got so cold and wet here im brining them in now. I tried him in the split with mom again and he was still very anxious and stamping his feet, but he calmed down a bit. Will keep with this for a week or two and then maybe pair him off with uncle.

Post by: Anna on November 25, 2017, 05:13:59 PM
I cant really help I'm afraid as I have always arranged to so there are at least two to wean together. Mine always get left until after Christmas regardless of age and then the whole lot get separated from their mums at the same time. I wouldn't put him with thriller unless you can be 100% sure that they will get on. Using your split stable, could you make a hole/gap between them so he can see his Mum easily instead of trying the door? Sometimes if they can see Mum being relaxed and not bothered it helps. Who do you turn him out with in the daytime? Good luck, I'm sure it will all settle down in time and yes, the weather is pretty grotty over here right now isn't it!

Post by: Rocklone on November 27, 2017, 02:56:36 PM
I had planned two to wean, but unfortunately lost my other colt at birth :(

I kept him with the split stall and mum, and they were fine. Today i let him out with uncle Thriller (Thriller is the ultimate nanny, he gets along with any horse and is always so gentle with them) and Lou was totally fine...no stress and didn't care a hoot about leaving mum.

Goldie was notibly more stressed by it all, i put her out with the mares or tried to..there is a window looking out to the paddock Lou was in so when she saw him she refused to move away from the window bless her. Had to coax her out, to where she could see him over the fence. After she saw him she was fine and gradually she moved further away to the actual grass paddock. Again Lou didn't care much that she was there then not!

Funny thing though, Charm was actually very stressed at him not being with Goldie. When she seen Goldie she looked around for Lou then went for a mad gallop screaming her head off. Worse than Goldie! Then when she seen him over the fence she was pacing and swinging her head about until i told her to wise up and chased her away. Not even her foal, and she hasn't been "with" him in the same paddock for months! Just shows how strong their bonds/instincts are  and how intelligent they are.

Had a giggle though, Meadow has started trying to copy the head swinging thing of Charm. She stood watching her kind of like "i don't really understand whats going on, but mum is swinging her head about, so ill try it too" as if she wasnt already enough of a Charm clone! Absolute idiot hahaha

Few photos of our day:

Goldies window lol

Lou is a doll. So many people had me scared about "colts" but im forming the opinion that its not the horse but the owner lol

Yesterday i tied him up (prob 2nd time tied up and he had goldie beside him 1st time, so 1st time ever "alone") and gave him a proper groom with sprays and coming out his mane and tail and putting on hoof oils etc. He loved it!

He has balls, i have felt them before, but they are hibernating at the moment haha so i am waiting for him to start suddenly stomping and biting but he has never been a biter or the like and he knows he is not allowed to lift a leg to me in anger. Hes very sweet.

He's a really smart looking little fella and that head is just perfect. You are finding out that not all colts are 'colty' any more than all stallions are fierce, flame throwing monsters. LOL!!
Title: Re: Rocklone GB Louis Vuitton

A Truly handsome young man, for sure.  And yes, there are some fabulous boys that just are perfect little boys -- without the attitude.  I've had many over the years, and I expect this little one to be just wonderful for you!!  Nothing nicer than a well mannered stallion!
Title: Re: Rocklone GB Louis Vuitton
Post by: Rocklone on December 28, 2017, 06:24:55 PM
Well his dad was always a very nice stallion. But i had a very similar approach to him that his owner did i.e. no nonsense. I don't hand treat much, but if i do its a rare treat and they have to be respectful about it - i don't tolerate mouthing/biting. Hes a more fearful type character naturally, like mum can be so i actually hope he gets a little braver with his nuggets. Then again dad was also very respectful that way, as in i would be able to chase him off a mare just by my own stance and "ah!" so who knows if its training or breeding....hahah

Lovely looking boy , he looks so much like Goldie :)
Title: Re: Rocklone GB Louis Vuitton
Post by: Rocklone on March 11, 2018, 10:48:56 PM
So i clipped Thriller cause he is toooooo fat and was getting a bit hot and skin not great...Lou would not leave me alone...so i ended up putting the clipper on him to see his reaction and he literally stood nuzzling me and the air the entire time. If i stopped to switch blades he would paw and get on like a tool....so safe to say he liked it ha!

Its a total rough clip with blades i need to throw out and hes not set up at all but when i looked at him i was instantly reminded of Goldie. Hes her spitting image, but has Banners more sloped hind, and a better chest. Hes not perfect, i think his body is a little bigger than the rest of him, and he has a really weak neck thats goin to be upside down but then Goldie is quite a thick upside down animal so he was always going to be too. he was bred to drive and be a mini not to show. But hes sooooo cute!

We are showing this year just to get him out and do stuff, but i think he will really take to it, he has a great attitude. I wish meadow had his attitude!!

So lulu (which i have a bad habit of calling him...very manly..) had his first show. He got 1st! It was a local show but against some good "bought&produced" horses. So very proud of him and very excited by him...his show ethic is amazing - he is a little rocket! He shows like a stallion at only 1yo. He moves like a dream very forward and willing and naturally stands but also is so smart that he stands as you tell him to...with very minimal training. He just seems to LOVE it. Just like his daddy :D

No nice pics as usual cause people don't take pics of me lol

But, ive decided to take him to a real mini show this saturday. I know the best i can aim for at it is second cause i know they are the top horses in the country and the top yearling is just wow... but 2nd to me would be amazing!!! I am just really excited to show a horse that likes to do it. Meadow has me so bummed out, but ill post about that in her thread lol

Been aggges since i updated. Lulu had a terrible show, i think it was just too long a journey for him. It was also a reallllllllllllllllllllly hot day inside a walled garden on sand. He was crossing his hind legs, twisting them, just not at all a good horse. Was very embarrassed as it was his first time with "mini" people and he did that! he gets home, pees, and is back to being amazing with attitude not twisting etc. Oh well.

Hes still gorgeous.

Lou has been gelded. He was never going to be a stallion prospect but i wanted him to grow to his natural state and not get fat and stumpy like mom lol

Hes coped with it well so far, no heat or blood and minimal swelling. He still thinks he is is a stallion but early days. Two days before the event my dad left a gate open and he got some action with all the mares (well i assume he did because he always had a shy penis and anytime i saw it it was unused looking with a little crust on it, then after this is was a nice clean bright pink, plus all the mares had stinking back ends) so we have two mares to go to get the DONT BE PREGNANT jab and im gonna leave one as a lets see what happens. But i highly highly doubt she will have caught which is a shame but also a blessing ahhaha

I have decided that for now i will not be breeding anything, or taking on any more minis or really showing much. I adore my minis and they are with me for life, but that is sort of the problem too..i can't let them go. So im not going to make it as a breeder/farm. I would let meadow go to someone i closely know and like as a lease only because i know shes a great mare and i cant breed her without keeping a foal, but the rest are not up for anything other than pets and they are my pets. I have also decided i would like another big horse as my Jed is older and just needs to slow down some. SO Lou may get broken to drive or he may just be a pet...future will tell.

They always cope better than we do.
He's only 10 days old, and I'm already debating when to geld the newest addition.  He's so small, I've contemplated breeding to my mare that my smallest, senior stallion has not caught yet (she's too small for Topper); I realize his parents taller genes are in the mix, but time will tell.

Yes, Chanda is correct, they always do better than us.  Sometimes we just need a little "down time" to just sit back and enjoy.

I had a missed season with charm and my excitement got crazy then she came in season boooooooooooo!!!! lol

Lou is still doing well. He has lost the obvious stallion behaviour and "aggression" for lack of better term  but he still firmly thinks its his job to check out the mares bar mom..mom is totally ignored. I kind of feel sorry for her. But its also totally fascinating that he literally doesn't look once at mom but will quietly follow and sniff Charm and Meadow.

Charm is very much GO AWAY and gives him a good kick which he somewhat ignores but doesn't push too hard, Meadow is still young and her only experience of stallions is Lou (so yeah they have had a little kinoodle but since hes gelded its not an issue haha) but she watches everything Charm does and is now learning to tell him to eff off. I have not let them all be together for more than an hour or so and always with supervision not because im worried about aggression (lou is so beyond laid back) but more cause i don't want him just constantly walking after the mares and them getting too annoyed.. he is like a little kid walking after you asking "why"

I have high hopes they will all mingle well in winter when there is less hormones floating about.

Im also VERY interested as to why he has never once shown any interest in Mom.  My biggest fear when he was a colt was that he would mate mom and id have that to deal with but literally not once ever has he even sniffed mom through a fence. She was the first i put out with him after gelding cause i thought she would be the easiest and he didn't even react. Nor did she which i think is the key to it all lol she too wise to him and any action gives a reaction. he will walk around her to sniff charm or meadow. He is no herding them or anything just being a pest so i have high hopes :D

Interesting that he ignores his mom.
There are plenty of scenarios  out there were a colt bred his mom and you end up with linebreeding if it turned out well (inbreeding if it didn't).

Yup!  Mother to Son or Father to Daughter okay!  Line-breeding.  Did it myself a couple of time to "cement in" certain traits that I liked.

Great pictures!!  And it is interesting that he was never interested in his mom!!  Hmmmmm....

The only conclusion i can come up with is that shes basically "past it" and has zero sex appeal to him. But even as a colt he never did the trying to mount mom type thing...mom was always just a no. When still entire i would use him to tease just to see who was in season etc and when mom went by it was a look then hed go away with zero interaction lol maybe shes just not his type.

I have had them out once all day with no supervision and everyone lived. But i was here all day and able to check a lot..lol.. i know i will have to eventually let them be and let them work their dynamics out but i just worry about him being a pest and charms still reactive and shes has hock arthritis so i don't want her doing herself damage. Meadow is just a young tart and loves attention and just isn't being strong enough...i literally want to scream "meadow kick the hell out of him, dont LET him bother you!" shes being far far too polite lol

SO not much longer later they are all out together for a bit (until one comes into season lol)

The new herd dynamics are Meadow and Lou are attached at the hip if one moves the other does they are like in sync, Elvis and Charm are best buds spending most of their time grooming and Goldie is just kind of walking between the two couples going " im still relevant, i dont need to be loved but you will listen to me and move if i say so"

Its all so fascinating. They have been left to do their thing but ill be getting them in again cause they are SO so fat and were only out to have the space to move away from eachother so it will be interesting to see how they do in a smaller/moooooooooooooooch less food area.

So they ended up staying out just over a week, then i got the guilts about the fatness. When out Meadow and Charm both came into season and Lou wasn't bothering them that much though i do suspect he had his wicked way with them a few times. Anywhoo, brought them into the smaller sparce pen and they were okay for a few hours but it was too close for them, Lou was starting to fight Elvis to keep him from the mares, Charm was constantly trying to keep Lou away from Meadow who is a harlot and didnt mind...but Charm minded!! She didn't want Louis herself, she just didn't want him with her darling daughter lol Goldie was her usual "im not getting involved" Self. So i eventually split them and had Goldie and Lou in one area and the others together which i thought would work for a few days. Nope. The issue is entirely with Meadow the tart! She was teasing Elvis who doesn't "get" why but this annoyed Charm cause noone can look at her child. Its been 4 years Charm, shes not a baby now! Get over it! So i gave up and put them in the stables for a few days. Let the out again today into the big paddock cause its where they are most settled and it was all back to normalish, though Meadow is still being a tart and Lou likes that but there is enought room to get away and Charm doesn't care about her child when there is food lol

SO the next step is trying to clip Elvis/Charm/Goldie to get some serious weight off them this winter, the other two will loose weight i hope naturally but if they don't they will need clipped too...i simply CANT let them come out of winter fat like they did last year (it was a seriously mild winter the grass grew all year!!!)

Little fluffy faaaaaaaaaat bums from today
