Title: Equine Color Thread
Post by: Holly on February 09, 2017, 09:55:23 PM
Sense we don't have one yet I thought it might be fun to discuss our equine colors.
Mostly because it's a topic I am really fascinated by
It's so interesting to me.I have so much more to learn.

First topic I would like to ask about is Appaloosa.
So far Legacy and Precious have had 3 Appaloosa foals together. One was a leopard, one a blanket with spots ( correct me if I am wrong on that one Diane) and now a snowcap.
I know Legacy has one LP and one pattern1 both he got from his sire.
Precious I think has one LP, but is it possible she has 2 ?  Can a varnish be homozygous LP?
And can snowcap carry patrn 1?

I so don't understand appy.
I know Tana's sire was a leopard appy (untested, so no idea of genetics behind it), she just has characteristics, no spots, and I don't think she's varnish, but with her coloring it might be hard to tell.  [Tana is silver bay dun, looks a bit like a dark palomino.]
Tana's son, Monte also has characteristics but no spots, and I don't see varnish yet.  [Monte is grulla.]
Tana's son, Spotty has a blanket and white tipped ears.  [Spotty is bay.]
Both colts were sired by a bay stallion with no known appy genes.

I'm contemplating color/pattern testing Spotty with the color package at UC Davis (at least I think it's Davis), that tests red factor (black), Agouti, splash, LP and PATN1, last I heard it was like $60.
