Title: Maybe baby for Baybe - HC Minis 2017
Post by: Chanda on January 10, 2017, 01:45:42 PM
I'm not going to get my hopes up or hold my breath, but Baybe looks suspiciously lopsided.
Che` gives whole new meaning to hand breeding, so I really don't see him getting Baybe bred without help, and I don't recall doing any hand breeding last summer.  [I'll have to check my calendar.]
Too cold to get a current picture, so just a couple pictures so  you know who the potential parents are.
Baybe, sorrel pinto; and Che' silver buckskin.

Ok, I have a note on my calendar the end of June, about Che` trying to cover Baybe, so perhaps we have a shot at a May baby.  But, as said, I'm not holding my breath.   I didn't turn in a stallion report for him, so if she does produce a live foal, we'll have a late report to send in and a late fee.

Oh, this is great news!  Praying, crossing my fingers and doing anything I can think of to wish this mare in foal!  I can't wait!!

I think it's going to take a whole lot of crossed fingers, no babies from her and Che` in going on 5 years.  I bought her bred the fall before I got Tilly, she lost her foal to a late term abortion; Tilly is going to be 5 in the spring.  [So, I guess that's 4 years of no babies from them. They are turned out daily together, but as I said, Che` gives whole new meaning to hand breeding.]

Weather permitting, I have hooves to trim in a few days when it's supposed to be in the teens instead of hovering around zero; I'll try to get my camera out there, but hard to see much through all the hair.

Well, Chanda, if you do get pictures....she won't be the only mare who's so hairy down there-y that we can't see anything. Maybe this year she stood in a hole and squatted juuuuusst right!

Still just a maybe.  Don't know if it means anything, but she's more stand-offish than usual.

It'll be awhile before I try pictures, the bottom dropped out on our temps.  Sorry I didn't get pics while it was decent.  Some days she looks maybe, some days not.

Keep crossing those fingers for her.
I'm still leaning towards maybe, but I thought I saw movement and maybe even felt it, but it was high up in the flank area, so don't know if that's an area to see/feel it or not.  [Might just have been digestion.]

Finally, finally, and finally, got pictures of Baybe to share.
Side, top and rear views.  Of course, she had to turn her head to look at me when I tried to take the rear shot, so the left side sticks out even more, throwing off the tell-tale lopsided look (looks really lopsided, but with her head turned it could be her stance).

I'm voting yes even with the extra bulge from head turning.  She has that nice round belly, and I'm praying she grows and grows and gives you that special little one this spring!!

It'll be interesting to see her personality when she has a foal at side.  she's a bit stand-offish now and pretty much has been since I got her.

As long as you are crossing your fingers for Baybe, cross them for the Buckskin Berry Fairy for this cross, please.  ;)
And, if you want to add paint, great; a pinto buckskin colt would be perfect; but I'll take healthy and thriving.

Title: Re: Maybe baby for Baybe - HC Minis 2017

Since, I seem to be all about nutrition and trying to do my best with what I can readily get locally, if I can...
I added some alfalfa pellets to Baybe's ration last month.   Since, Baybe shares hay with Tilly, the mini donkey, the hay needs to be plain grass hay, as donkey's don't need alfalfa or any other rich feed; so I'll be adding to Baybe's daily ration to improve her diet.   All the mares (and, Tilly) are on a 12% protein extruded feed, it looks like rice krispies (and except for Bliss, they all love it), so to bump up nutrition for pregnancy/lactation I'll add either alfalfa pellets (like I did for Baybe) or a ration balancer (like I did the 2012 foaling season, which kept the mares in good condition).

She's got me more on maybe again.  She's starting to shed and doesn't look as round, but still has more baby shape than fat shape.  When our weather comes back around to nice, I'll see about getting a picture (dropped 30+ degrees since the high yesterday).

Thank you.  We need all the help we can get, if Che` got it done on his own last year, finally, that would be so much easier than trying to get hand breeding done (but that's what we'll do this summer, if she isn't).

Poor Baybe has a bit of a hitch in her get-along, she's a bit stiff on her right hind, seems to be her hip, but could be her hock.  Not sure if this could be normal for her when pregnant, as she hasn't been pregnant in 5 years.  I bought her pregnant, and she lost a sorrel pinto filly to late term umbilical twist.  Which is another reason this one is so special if she is pregnant, which I'm feeling fairly strong about, although, she's not as big as some pregnant mares get.
She's due for a trim, so will go about it nice and easy.

Glad you guys can see it in pictures, she doesn't look as big in person.  They always say pictures add 10#.   ;)
she was good for her hoof trim the other day, and I used a shedding blade and took off some loose hair.  Need to spritz a bit of detangler in her mane and comb it out before the foal comes.

Evening Chanda, I hope you're starting to see and feel some REAL signs of spring.

Earlier on, you'd ventured a guess of late April for a possible earliest foal date for Baybe. Is she showing signs of staying on that schedule? Since she was already in foal when she arrived, is she showing any "traditional" by-the-book developments? Or has she decided that, it's MUCH MORE FUN to make you really, truly bonkers while you're right in the midst of calving season too?! LOL

I did buy her bred, but that was 6 years ago, she lost that foal that spring to a twisted cord.   This is her first baby here, as Che` gives whole new meaning to "hand breeding"; but I did see him trying his best late June last year, and her belly looks suspicious; although, a bit less so now that she is shedding and less fluffy.  I'm pretty sure I've seen movement, and her personality has changed.

Baybe is certainly going to drive me insane with the "is she, isn't she" debate.
She does not look the least bit pregnant from behind.   She is not a cooperate subject and it was dinnertime, so she really didn't want to stop for pictures.
She has a "look" about her from the side.  [She is not build downhill, everything we own is on a hill, and she's standing on the mound that has formed from manure and hay in the corral (hardest pen to clean, so doesn't get done very often).]

At least I'm not totally seeing things that aren't there, but it'll be interesting to what and if she is carrying.  I won't hold my breath, I might pass out, but I will cross my fingers.
At the moment, the donkey looks more pregnant than Baybe, but she is still hanging on to winter woolies and she is a bit fat still.

Well, now I'm leaning towards not likely pregnant, Che` is showing way too  much interest in Baybe; but I'll keep crossing my fingers and hoping for a foal.  If won't doesn't appear by the end of June, then we'll work on hand breeding for next year.

I don't know what to think.  It's been a year since I saw Che` making attempts, but with him that doesn't necessarily mean he got the job done.  Monday was dentist day, and she thought Baybe looked like she might be pregnant; but that's the best I've got at the moment.   There might be a little going on with her milk veins, but maybe I want it so much, that I'm seeing things.

I can sure hope, but he does give whole new meaning to hand breeding, that is for sure.  She gets plenty to eat (good nutrition not just filler), but isn't fat.  She's "sunken" in the flank, but has a bit of a belly.

Just checking in to see if she ever gave you a solid "I am" or "I'm not" answer.  Don't know about anyone else, but my fingers have cramped from being crossed so long! If she's come into season, did you have a chance to get her hand-covered?

I really don't know if she is or isn't, these days; she kind of has that pregnant look, now and then Che` shows interest in her, but there are days he'd show interest in a post, so I'm just not sure.   We are in a severe drought, with high heat and no precip to speak of, so I've put breeding plans on hold for now; my hay went up 30% this year due to the drought, luckily I don't have to buy all my hay, just some small squares for one barn, but it still put a dent in my budget for anything.

 ;D ;D :P :P ::) ::) :P :P ;D ;D

Boy am I glad I had nothing in my mouth when I read this!!

*getting on soap box*
We've been talking about how God has his plans quite a bit this last couple of weeks. Maybe He let 'Che have his bit of fun.  *shrug* If there is a foal, and it comes late, maybe it will be a milder winter. Or if there isn't a foal, you've already mentioned the drought.  A foal at foot going into winter might have pulled her down.  If we're lucky, we'll understand one day. Or maybe...he wants Spotty to stay with you a bit longer, so He's making sure there are enough slots to go around!  :P

*okay, off soap box now*

We have a nice shelter and stall where Baybe lives and I have blankets, so likely would be fine.
I did put Spotty up on a ad page, but likely he won't go anywhere as I just can't let go; if he does stay, he'll be gelded as I don't wish to breed appies and he's too randy for his own good, he's a stink (just ask Dakota, Monte and Manny, I think they are ready to give their little brother up for adoption or flush him down the toilet, he's so naughty).

Thinking no go on baby for Baybe, just belly (perhaps broodmare belly, since she had 4-5 foals back to back before coming here).
I did trim her hooves today, she had tons of growth to cut off, and they had gone a bit wonky, but I think I got them pretty balanced for this trim and will hopefully get the rest next trim.

In that case, although I'm still hoping....., we look forward to some successful hand-breeding this season!!

That would be nice, but I won't hold my breath, I don't want to turn blue and pass out.

Any progress on the Baybe front?  Have any of your mares started cycling yet?  I know that you get *real* winters there in Montana, so don't know about when your girls get started.  If not, has she changed shape at all?  Has the shedding continued enough that you can see her shape, and boobies, well?  If Sophia foals and Baybe doesn't will you still try to hand breed?

Baybe didn't foal last year, I plan to try hand breeding this summer.

Sounds like a good plan, since then you'll be in control of when baby will be born -- when weather is warm enough.

Thinking I'll pasture breed the three girls, just need to figure out where to put Bliss and Dolly.

Me, too.  He missed Misty last time we tried (I think we missed her on both ends of the turn out time), and Showy's foal didn't get out of the sack (She didn't look that ready, and we had to work cows that morning, so I didn't get to the barn as early as usual and missed it).

Sorry about the miscalculation on the foal date Chanda.  Somehow I got it into my head that there was a chance Baybe got caught in June.  Silly me!

Here's a question for you.  If three new foals might be coming in,will anyone have to go out?  If so, who might it be? Or are you one of those lucky folks who can hang on to everyone if just the right home doesn't come along?

We raise cattle, so have space and hay, so much to hubby's chagrin, I don't have to sell anybody.   Although, this year has been a challenge due to last year's drought and crappy hay, I've had to supplement more than usual, and I still haven't quite found the right combination of feeds that work to keep everyone at a good weight.
Spotty is for sale, should the right home come along.

Ok, revisiting Maybe Baby for Baybe, version 2019...

It's just coming up on February in Montana, and Baybe is shedding more than anyone else; I usually only see this early of shedding in pregnant mares; but anything is possible with my luck.
I never did get around to trying hand breeding last summer, as the drought had me put everything on hold.
We'd still like a buckskin colt, if we are to make wishes; but alive and healthy is always good.
No udder development to speak of.   and, the string test swings back and forth.   ;)

I usually don't see much until into March, and usually not until after the first day of spring; so first week of February is early.

No, we have it this week.  20 below today plus whatever windchill makes it.   Cold, darn cold.

These temps are fairly normal during this time of year, what makes it so hard is the warmer temps leading up to it, it was 30 above on Saturday.
