Title: Exercise
Post by: Holly on January 09, 2017, 12:47:29 PM
So I started Pilates this morning. I've decided to get fit again, tone up and drop a few lbs. And I am dieing, lol. My legs feel like jello. Tomorrow I  going to be so sore, and will want to give up. Lol. This is the hardest part, but I hope I have the will to keep pushing through.
I took before pictures and measurements to encourage myself.

Anyone else starting fresh with the new year?

I'd love to try Yoga.  Bought a small book a few years ago, tried it for a couple weeks, but on my own I just couldn't stick with it.   I'm just too far out to try a class. Perhaps I'll try again.
Although, I do believe trudging through snow banks qualifies as exercise, now if I could just curb my snacking.

I tried Pilates once. My SIL said "Come and try it its fun" So I thought why not.

Well I have to say that there were 80yo men and ladies in the class that were more flexible than I am.

Id love to get back into running once my coccyx has healed.

I do plan on eating ALOT healthier this year. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg :)

Chanda I would love yoga too.
And I agree trudging through snow would definitely work!
Ryan, I like jogging too.
I started eating better, and plan on loading up on advil before bed lol.
I have always been so fit but the last few years I've really slacked. I am happy to be working out, but very sore!

Well, I've never really been fit for an extended period of my life, so I fall on the other end of the spectrum. Sometimes, I'm embarrassed to post, because I do so little then hurt more than I think I should.

Ingrid has said several times that she notices I don't eat much. She can't understand why I stay so heavy. The short answer was "sweets." What I didn't tell her is not only is it sweets, it's sneakin' eatin'. I hide when I eat sweets. When I say hide, I mean H-I-D-E, to the point of burying wrappers under other pieces of trash so no one knows.   :'( :'( :'(

If y'all promise not to judge me (really, this is so difficult to confess, I'm in tears here) I'll keep up with you. What I've been doing since right after Christmas is eating more healthy. I try to keep leftovers available so that I can't use the excuse of "tired" to not cook at home.

It DOES help that Ingrid is always hungry. It helps EVEN MORE that she's not picky! Because of my lupus and extreme out-of-shapeness, I've committed to walking 3 days a week. If I walk out to the main road and back each time, I've completed my task. My biggest priority right now is consistency. Once I'm exercising regularly I can do more.

So yeah, I guess I'm in!

Well your not on your own there Julie :)

I, too am a shocker for hiding the chocolate wrappers under anything possible. I really hope No one opens the fire door before I light it for the first time in winter , Its filled to the brim with lollie wrappers.

No judgement here , thats why this a great place to come :)

Im not really able to exercise at the moment because of injury , But I am able to make a start by eating a lot healthier.

So whos keen on a two week "Healthy eating Challenge" The only rules are

 1) you must be Honest with what you eat
 2) you MUST post each day or when you have time as to what you have eaten

We could start next week if anyones keen, it could be a good idea for new recipes aswell :)

I'm ready!  A few years back, between 5/18/13 and 9/16/14, I lost 150+ pounds.  Now, I find myself 100 pounds heavier again, and just started my diet once again.  So, I'm all for joining any group here that will be supportive, as I can't believe I let myself go again!  DUH!

I sure miss how good I felt 2 years ago, and really want that again!  So, count me in!

I'm in too. What day are we starting, so I can clean cabinets and fridge? I also need to ask co-workers not to offer leftovers to me "for the animals."

today I did it!! Pilates day 3! Pain is starting to ease up a bit. I purchased a yoga series from beginner to medium. I may do that tomorrow instead of pilates, but who knows.
Weird enough Ive gained 3 lbs sense starting.  :o Not sure why as my friend doing it with me lost 3 lbs!

Keep up the good work yall!!

Only 0.6 pounds lost today, but I'm still happy with that!

You know, this could be a l...o...n...g... thread before it's done, but I think it will be grand!

Glad to hear its becoming easier on the body Holly. It will get easier by the day :)

I took myself for a 5km walk last night , its about all that I can manage at the moment. I actually feel so good ( touch wood) that I wanna break out into a run or dance like no ones watching in the kitchen , just worried ill regret it if my coccyx starts hurting again.

Ryan, I broke my tailbone about 10 yrs ago doing the Kwon do. It was terrible. Took years before I could sit right. I so understand how difficult that can be.
Today we ended our first week. We did an AB workout with a small ball, and did some leg an arm work outs. The squats are the hardest on me. My thighs are feeling better though! We also did a mile bike ride, and a1/2 mile walk.
I've lost a lb so only gained 2 from starting.
I am blessed to have a friend to do this with. I don't think I could do it alone!!

Holly I didn't see this until now. I can totally feel your pain. How long after were you able to ride again ? If I wasnt so keen to get back into the saddle , I would prob just put up with the pain.  Its been going on for 18 months now and Ive just had the 2nd cortisone injection that Im allowed. Ive been trying to accomplish as much as possible at home by doing as little as possible.  Being so limited has been really quite depressing , even when I last went to my general practitioner Dr the last time he asked if I wanted to try some antidepressant tablets , to which I declined. I asked him why I would need these and he said that back and tailbone injuries can be very depressing due to limited movement and that the recovery is quite looooooonnnnnngggggg.

I have been walking alot as I am at my best when standing. Ive even avoided driving as much as possible of late and when the days over Im laying on the couch instead of sitting.

Ill have to go back to the surgeon in the next month or so to find out what the next options are. It will be about 8 weeks since the injection so If it hasnt kicked in by then , I doubt it will.

Ive walked about 15kms over the last week, just at a nice slow pace.

You're doing better in the walking department than I am Ryan!  I've done quite a bit of ground driving with Spanky, back and forth to his turnout from the barn. About 45 minutes a day of in hand work total. I don't count it as "exercise" though, as I move as fast as a herd of turtles in a peanut butter marsh. (I procured this saying from a t-shirt I saw someone wearing!)

I have, however, been doing alternative exercise. Today, for example, we made an unplanned 400 mile round trip. On the return portion of it, I did arm lifts, modified stomach crunches, and I'm not sure WHAT you'd call what I did with my legs. Since I was the driver, I just did tiny leg lifts. I also did thigh squeezes, rump lifts and some weird butterfly leg movements. The point was to move SOMETHING to every song on the DVD. Not surprisingly since I'm so out of shape, I feel every muscle. We've only been home an hour, so tomorrow should be......challenging....to say the least.

LOL thats a great Tshirt Julie. :)

Every little bit counts.  The body definitely feels it the day after :)

I really don't remember how long it took but I do remember it was a very long time. And for years after certain sitting positions would aggravate it. I took up riding several years later, and don't recall riding ever hurting my tailbone. It could be were our individual breaks were. I did not break the tip it was higher up. It's been ten plus years ago and hasn't bothered me in a long time. I was younger had younger kids and most likely healed faster than I would now. I wish I could give you a better time frame.
I've lost 2 lbs. Have been doing very little this week my friend is having congestion issues and I can't commit to a morning routine until after precious foals, so I am squeezing in a few short workouts here and there.
I love the idea of your alternative workouts! That's really quite clever!

You would think horse chores would be good exercise, and keep us fit, but it doesn't seem to be enough.  Although, I'm sure my snacking works very much against me.

Theres gotta be alot of miles/kilometers that we do daily, Some days I would have to do 5 kms just walking around home , doing jobs.    My snacking doesnt help either  :(

Snacking I think is the "death" of most of us!  LOL

Really rough, old drawing of the corrals.  The house is about 75-100' off to the right end of this picture (as you look at it); each corral is 50x100'.  the mares are in the pen marked mini pen; Topper is in the one marked Dakota's; Baybe, Tilly and Che` are in the big open faced shelter; and the geldings are 100' or more past the mini pen in their pen (the saddle horses are 50' past that).  I walk from the house to the mini pen (and back) at least twice daily, and from there to the gelding pen.
I should really get a pedometer and see just how many miles I walk a day.

I wonder if there have ever been any studies done with something along these lines:

Walking a set distance daily doing (for example) Chanda's chores vs. walking that same total daily distance with THE MIND FOCUSED ON THIS IS A WORKOUT.

I wonder if walking with the intention of exercise makes the brain fire off different signals and chemicals that burn off different types of energy producing cells...for example fat cells vs. muscle cells.

A GOLD STAR to all who read this and it makes sense to you!! ROFL

I read it, and understand what you're saying.  Don't have any answers for you, but it's an interesting thought. Especially, since the mind has such control over certain things. Interesting.....

I think my scale is broken. It says I lost 14 pounds in January...but I KNOW I didn't. All of my clothes fit the same. So it's got to be broke, right??

Only one problem. Everyone else weighs the same. :-/  Ingrid was SOOOOO excited, she's actually the one who had seen both weigh ins. When she saw I was down she was eager to weigh herself. Wasn't too happy when she weighed the same. Even weighed Gonzalo (my husband) and he hadn't changed either. Since he was part of my last weigh in too, I can't figure out how my scale is broken.

Sounds like it is NOT a broken scale, and that you actually lost the weight!!!  Congratulations!!  Sometimes it takes a while for the shifting around of your remaining weight to see a difference in the way clothes fit, but I bet you will!!

I only lost a total of 6 pounds, but I'm happy with that!

14 that's awesome!!!

I didn't work out the last 2 weeks Precious was in foal, so I lost a bit of what toning I started.
I did a new cardio and killer buns and thighs by some Jillian chick and tonight I have killed calves and thighs. I am walking like a T Rex!  😂  Took today off and just stretched back at it in the morning!
I have lost 1/2 a lb, total so far, but I feel much better!

Sounds like your walking like I do when i havent ridden for ages.  Hope your not feeling it too much tomorrow :)

Ive lost 2 kilos in the last week. Ive done heaps of walking and with the temps in the high 30s for most of the last week , ive lost alot of it due to sweating it out. A combination of that and trying to eat as much fruit and veggies as possible.

Holly - I got my first of the strawberries that i mentioned a while back that had the diff flavours. This was the razzberry one and it very much tasted as a normal strawberry does , only alot sweeter.

OH goodness! I bet it was fantastic! I really need to invest in strawberries I had 3 plants and didnt get enough at one time to do anything with, so I may need a few more.
