Title: LP Painted Ponys 2017
Post by: paintponylvr on November 22, 2016, 07:30:05 PM
I just realized this morning while looking thru these posts that I have about 2-3 weeks to get a "temp" stall put up for miss "Taff".  She is our wildest pony.  We've never been able to put her out in the main pastures - she blows right thru the fences and that's a rodeo I just don't want to deal with.  She's remained in the large blue panel pen (bigger than a 60' round pen, but not sure by how much).  Our daughter can corner her, get a halter on her and very carefully handle her but it's not easy or really enjoyable...  She WAS friendly with her last foal - she wanted us to fix him, we couldn't and he passed at 3 days of age - dummy foal.  She DID allow us to milk her out - don't ask how.  Once he was buried, she turned really nasty for quite a long time.

Anyhoo, need to put up panels that she can foal in with a hooped roof over the top.  Will hope to be there when she foals and be able to handle the foal right away or soon after...  Really think she'll foal in January - would have been covered between Feb 19-Mar 23. OR later from say March 26th - now...  (really think from the way she's looking that it will be a January foal).

Some of the others are looking like they are coming along, too.  I'll need to start getting pictures taken again, so we can track them.

yes, foal watch will be exciting, even though from a questionable, cryptorchid stallion.

Believe we'll be watching these two as well - Koalah:

Taff (silver buckskin in blue panel pen) would be due from end of Dec - middle of March.  Toro in with her from 19 Feb thru 23 March.  Really feeling may be January foal.

Koalah, Tory, Cheri, 'Clipse and K-La were in the pasture when Toro got out of his pen and he ended up running with them from 23 March to 23 July (Have to look up July date).  So Koalah & Tory would be due around the beginning of Feb at the earliest (?)... Remember though that Tory got pretty large in 2015 and then never produced a foal and Koalah almost always looks large (but she DOES look like a true baby bump right now, LOL).

Cheri and 'Clipse aren't really showing anything and K-la has a larger tummy but not sure she's truly pregnant.  She is also older now and is having some metabolic issues (laminitus) - so not really sure about her.  She has been wormed and I need to see if I can find some liquid Strongid to do a double dose (I don't have enough to do everyone).

Didn't do pics yesterday - went out late and coughing too hard to hold even my phone steady enuff to take any decent pics. Maybe today?  We'll see.

One last mare was covered only one time (May 20th). Bell covered by Echo.  She was going out and I didn't breed her the next day.  Hope we caught her.  If she comes into season this spring instead of foaling, I'll be putting her with Echo.  Would really like to get another foal out of her and since I never bred her to AJ, breeding her to his son will work!  She will be 25 in May, though, and I usually don't bred too much at that age...  Her full sister has had problems with maintaining pregnancies since 2009 when I purchased her - finally carried one almost to full term in 2013 and then aborted :(   - colt appeared to have died in utero from a severely twisted cord that didn't allow any more nutrition to flow between them.  Bit was very sick for a while and I'm so glad that she was able to deliver the foal - even though dead.  So I've only had 2 foals from Bell.  We shall see...

wow ! Seriously they are looking closer than Precious and she is due Jan - Feb.  Have you noticed any udder development in those girls yet? Precious has started the tiniest amount of fullness in the mornings.  I am surprised!!

Oh Paula....2017 will be here in less than a week......how are the girls coming along? I know you've been quite ill, so may not have updated piccies. We know you can describe what's going on with them though. With the group your expecting, we're all prepared with a cup of tea and a snack when we check your entries!

I finally got a couple of pics yesterday, but don't have them on my computer yet and I'm getting ready to go back outside.  Rain has cleared off a bit - maybe I will be able to get some pics today.  Or over this weekend.

Taff is getting really big but can't get angled right to see her udder.  Will be moving some panels today - haven't quite figured out how I'm going to do this yet.  Seriously considering moving her to round pen (different fencing) and moving the babies & Toro to the blue panel pen.  Have to think faster, I guess!

There has been some other things going on, not in the best of ways, and I hadn't shared yet.  May share later today?  Made for a bit of a rough 2 week Christmas break.  Between being sick myself, part of our family being sick and other things - Christmas itself was very subdued and quiet...

I'll be happy to leave 2016, not one of our best years, behind.  Reading that another actor whom we took joy in in the 80s has moved on, has really added to the ...  disquiet.  Too many, all at once, at the end of 2016.

Looking forward to the foals in 2017.

Morning Paula. I know you're might still be in a rough patch. How are the girls hangin'?  (Besides the obvious wide and low with Koalah and Tori.)  Does Taff look like she might be getting closer?

How did y'all handle this last storm? We got rain, rain and more rain! Then sleet fairly heavy and no snow. Ingrid was excited when she first went outside but her face fell when I explained what, exactly, sleet was.

I hope the things that were going on last week are a little better for you this week. I'll be looking forward to an update to this thread when you can.

Hey everyone - I've been out of the loop for a bit, though did some answering...  I am starting to get better! Both in the coughing department and feeling much better, even with being slammed at work since we had one employee quit and another had emergency surgery her own self...  12 hour days - YIKES!  I'm still coughing but much reduced.

No foal yet for Taff, but getting closer.  Unfortunately, I cna't get udder pics of her.  We will be moving the panels that are a small pen outside this pen, back into it.  Then will feed her in there - and catch her if we can w/o stressing her.  Want to braid up her tail and check her a little better.  Putting the pen inside the big pen means that if she "breaks out" - she will still be in the larger pen.  We will also put cattle panel around the "stall", so that she will be in it (hopefully) when she foals (at night).  That way the foal will not "slide out" of the pen.  Then the smaller pen will be bedded/cleaned and have a different source of hay at night (alfalfa).  Maybe can then get larger pen cleaned out a bit, too!!  Still can't get girlfriend's Arctic Cat over here for work - it's sidelined until they can afford to take in to fix what her hubby can't...  :(  Haven't found a small tractor (close by) that I can rent to "scrape out" the pen...  Seems like all the rental places have gone up in smoke, LOL.

The pics of Tory and Koalah are blurry!  They were taken at dusk (5:15 - 5:35 pm on Friday the 13th of Jan).  But thinking MAYBE pregnant on both?  Will try to get the girls cleaned up a bit and get tails braided up and manes "un-witched"...  LOL.

Koalah - I am not quite as confident she's in foal, now...  She appears to be much smaller than is her "norm"...  LOL.  But a lot of our ponies have lost a significant amount of weight since October's storms.  We are looking around for a different hay supplier - to do a mixed supply of hay (all coastal/bermuda).  May have to go with one I used previously (if he still has hay available right now - will be calling him again tomorrow).  The problem for us is he doesn't deliver and I have a very hard time getting his round bales out of our trailer.  I don't have a flat bed trailer...  We'll see what happens on that front.

Koalah - I like this pic even if it is a little blurry.  The "baby bump" is sticking out much more to the left and lower than on the right side. The can be seen both from the front and from the rear (no pics)...

Have to get some sleep, we are supposed to be working  on our floor tomorrow (pulled up carpet, replaced subflooring last week) today...

Have some more pics from the storm (why i put the temps on these pics - can't believe we went from 8* to 86* in 7 days...  The sweat made my clothes stick to me while holding 6 ponies for the farrier...  The ice in the water tanks last Saturday/Sunday was amazing!!  Only got a few pics had a bunch didn't turn out (too dark or too blurred to see images).

Looking good.
I ended up adding some alfalfa pellets for my two girls that got thin last year, the two that foaled,  after the grass was gone, our hay wasn't good enough.
Title: Re: LP Painted Ponys 2017

Chanda - they are already getting alfalfa pellets.  I think part of the problem is some need teeth done (working on that - got behind on that last year and now a lot of our younger ones need doing as well) and the other is we'd gone to feeding once a day.

Believe I need to go back to feeding two times a day to everyone.  I simply cna't split them up any more to get the ones under weight brought back up to where they need to be.  The problem really started after Hurricane Mathew, but some were having an issue here/there previously and I just moved them around to where I could easily dump feed around 5am before going to work.  I will have to get up consistently at 4:30 if I'm going back to feeding before work, but will work on that...  :(  At our other property it wasn't an issue...

Plus with this last storm - several dropped a ton of weight during that cold spell & the day after due to the freezing rain, wind & prolonged cold (3 full days).  I would have needed to have them and all the hay under shelter to have prevented that weight loss, I think.  We've never had that long of a spell of freezing rain and then that kind of drop in temps before...  and they do stay warmer when they have "ice" form on their bodies.  Ah well, it doesn't always work out perfectly.  Just have to fix it now.

The joys of working out logistics in a new place!  We'll get back on track.  I want them doing better, LOL!

Here's 'Clipse's pics.  She's still gaining steadily, too.  She didn't lose any weight after this last storm, but hasn't gained much either.

Really happy to hear that your finally on the improve with your health.  Your weather sound alot like "Melbourne Weather" Its a joke that it can be 42 degrees Celsius here and then in the hour drop to 15 degrees Celsius.

The girls look great and agree that they look pregnant :)

It really is even more surprising, when you know that Paula is only 30-35 miles north of me. Yet...her highs during hot weeks are about 10 degrees higher than here! We've not gotten higher than 70 here since (I think) early in December. Last week we didn't get higher than 68 one day, otherwise low 60's. Most nights, we're hovering between 27-35 until this week.

I don't know, since I haven't been out since last January (OH MY!) but it sure looks like Taff and Tory might be in a race to foal about the same time. Sure will be interesting to watch!

Holly - I doubt that in this new set up I'll ever have them on camera.  One - don't have a real barn and the electric to what we do have is ...  "chintzy".  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  More on that a bit later (time).  Two - the pasture gate isn't all that far from the house, but the main part of the pasture (barn, feed, what electric do have) is 1/2 mile + from the house.  Dont thing u can stream from that far? Three - i've never really enclosed the ponies.  Well, have, and still missed the birth(s) right outside my kitchen window.  Four - ALL of our ponies are happier when out on pasture.  Many were raised that way (gave birth themselves) before we purchased them and the maidens we had foal last year were unhappy when contained in the round pen - for birth and at first after they foaled.  Willing to go into pens to be fed, don't like being kept there... At our previous place, when stalled, most had quite a bit of "flip out time" - Tory would literally throw herself at the barn walls - kicking & screaming, "clawing" over the 4 1/2' stall wall.  I was more worried about her injuring herself/foal to be.  'Clipse HAS foaled in stalls but seems to be happier out.  Koalah is quiet in any stall - but will hold on until you move her out, then foal when your back is turned (3 out of 5 times that way - once while standing tied at her previous eating spot - story somewhere in these threads).  I have done the 30-45 day "get used to foaling area" ritual.

I am seriously thinking that I will swap the ponies around again.  Put the JR mares that aren't bred into the "big" pasture (since haven't finished the last 2 interior paddocks, they have the run of the whole outer perimeter and where we want to put their pasture), and the older mares that are bred, back into the smaller one.  At least that way, we'll see much easier who is getting closer...  May do that this weekend.  That is how I had them when they foaled the last time and it worked well.  I certainly can't put that many ponies in the round pen - I'd never get it clean again, LOL... and they'd have no room to actually move around...

One other thought.  Ours aren't "true" minis and several of the current pregnant mares are much larger than the minis on this forum (44-46" tall and much broader).  I have often used the criteria in the past of "easy foaling, no help" as a way to determine whom to rebreed and continue lines with.  Not so much with the ponies since we are still breeding predominantly older mares, but they all have a good history of foaling unassisted behind them...  YES, I do know that any birth can go wrong.  This theory can go for a while...

I need to run, already late...  argh.  I wasn't watching the time and I know better than to pop in when I should be finishing getting ready to go, LOL

Have to insert this really quick!!

Our ponies DO seem to have figured out our work schedules.  NONE has ever foaled when we've been off the property/at work.  Think that they realize, even if they "sneak one" by, that we are still on our schedules of checking them and if they DO need help, won't be long before we swing around to check on them again.  Almost never fails that they foal w/i minutes of us being back around - only in one case did one foal hours earlier (maiden KoKo - last year) when we weren't quite thinking she would.  BUT she didn't want us around and was UGLY for 2 months about us hanldling her colt...

I totally understand.  I know a lot of people who do things that way and it works out well for them.
Mine love their stalls. Every evening about an hour before sunset, they all make their way back to the barn, and stand around waiting for me to let them in.
I will be happy when we finish the barn and the ponies all have their own stall. Right now Legacy has to bunk up with Katie.
It works out fine, but will need to move ponies around when Katie gets closer to foaling.

Would love to see some pics of your barn when its done Holly.

Im thinking of putting up another shed in the near future to house my float and gear. Id also like it to have 2 boxes with some day yards off to the side and a hot wash.

My Big horses do that too. I hard feed in winter but even during the summer months, I can Guarantee they are waiting by the gate at 4:30 when I get home to say Hello.

Ours just really seem to like being under the trees.  But our tree situation has drastically changed as well.  Larry had marked trees that were double and triple trunks from one tree "root" in the ground, but when the tree crew got busy they seemed to think that that meant to take the whole tree.  So a bunch of our trees are now gone...  We will replant fruit trees instead, but they take longer to grow in some instances and the ponies will need to be fenced off of them at first (or all the time?).

I LOVE these pics that I've taken!  This is Tory, Toro (dark head between trunks), Koalah and Ellona.  This tree they did as we'd asked -one trunk (of the three) remains)...

It has finally occurred to me how I can accomplish several things all at once with Taff.  I will be splitting the large blue pen in two, shifting the round bale into a cattle panel wrap that is then put between the two pens.  Her pen will be "wrapped" in cattle panel to prevent the baby from being born and getting under/thru the fence.  Both pens will be smaller than the one now as a whole AND that will allow me to clean up the opened out area.  With her pen smaller, I'm hoping to be able to get my hands on her - removing the halter from her head, putting a different collar set up on her (will probably have another drag line tough) and maybe being able to handle her and take some pics.  Then, after the foal is born, I'd like to try to at least get her hooves "nipped" even if I can't rasp them.  I should be able to shift the panels around again/more and clean more of that pen up.  YEAH, i think this will work...  Now to see if I can do it by myself, starting tomorrow morning!

Wow, hadn't realized I hadn't posted at all over on this one since January...

Well, knew Taff was getting close as the positioning changed slightly and the edema was quite heavy.  I don't have any good pics of that.  Then on Monday (sunday nite/early morn) Larry came home EARLY and curled around me (!!).  I woke enough to wonder what/why and he stated that he hadn't been feeling good & I was back asleep. UP at 4:45 when alarm went off and out to do chores after a cup of coffee.  About 5:30, here comes youngest daughter down the drive - she'd brought oldest daughter to her home as she was violently ill at work.  Into the house to talk to her a bit, get ready for work and I hear one of the granddaughters "cough/gag"...  What a fun day of cleaning up and washing laundry - boss not happy I wasn't sick but asked for day off.  Monday eve - I felt off.  Tuesday morning was the real start of mine.  So, off again.  Did do chores both in the AM & PM.  Taff hadn't changed any from over the weekend.  Lots of butt rubbing.

Thru the nite I was still sick, then passed out.  Larry took my phone (alarm) and texted that I wasn't coming in...  & I slept until almost 10...  Stumbling around, I hadn't even checked out the front door (can see Taff's pen) yet when Sierra arrived home after meeting.  "YEP, we need to go out, grab camera/phone - pretty sure we have extra legs".  I groaned trying to keep up with her as my tummy sloshed...

BUT Taff had a SUPER NICE colt!  Looks to be a silver bay tobiano.  We've named him "Nymbus"...  Took a bit, but we cornered her sorta, caught the colt and then actually caught her as well for a little bit.  She was fine after we caught the colt and he couldn't run off w/o her - she left and immediately came back to see what we were doing with him.  She was  alittle upset, not bad.  I think this may finally be our opportunity to get some work done with her!  We shall see.

Thanx, guys!  I returned to work today (after doing chores at 5am) - spent the whole morning feeling queasy and off balance.  Our oldest daughter is still very ill with this "bug" - both granddaughters had it, lasted a few hours and over it.  Larry was 2nd longest. SIL was ill 1 time and over it (a first from what I understand).  Sierra (pictured w/ most of our foals the last couple of years) has had a lot of exposure to all of us, yet has not come down with anything (LUCKY her!!) Anyhoo.

I was told by someone who isn't on Google at all that they couldn't view the pics and then by my daughter and hubby that they couldn't either, though logged int thru Google.  I went in just now thru Google and got a different code.  Can you all go out and see if you can get to his photo album?  I'd really like to know if you can, then if you are logged into Google, have a Google account but not logged in or don't have an account at all.  I will be very unhappy if I need to look at transfering ALL these pics somewhere else to show them...

Here is his page.  https://lppaintedponys.org/nymbus/

Thanx for checking!

I did change the code/link out and now anybody/everybody should be able to go to the album...  Just a PITA to have to go two layers deeper into Google to get the code rather than just do the html/page when you open the album (especially from my phone when I try to send a link to someone...).  Computer geeks - fixing it to make it better - GEEZE!

I am feeling better...  (THANK THE HEAVENS above).  I do not wish that on my worst enemy, it was TERRIBLE.  The abdominal pain, even w/ nothing in your system to release, was monstrous!  Our SIL did come down with it on Thursday and he's in bad shape, still.  Oldest daughter, Skye, is finally doing better (we were thinking we'd have to take her in for at least IV fluids as NOTHING was staying down, but on the Thursday she started keeping things down - 4 full days & one 1/2 day after she started.  The youngest daughter (that I know of - she's out of town and hasn't responded to my "how ya feeling" text) and youngest grand daughter have not had it (yet?).  Good news - I seem to be mostly over all the coughing (finally) from the bronchitis, too.

I checked Taff & Koalah last night.  I do believe they are pregnant, but I also think they have a ways to go yet (yes, different from my earlier prediction).  Koalah has her "hanging, flappy" bag w/o any real development yet.  Tory actually has the start of a very SMALL udder, I will see if I can get pics today again and go from there.  I will do udder pics, too, just for comparison.

WHY o why is it soooo cold?  Will Mother Nature please stop this up & down?  Our low last night was 22* and I hope the plants I planted last weekend don't die!!  I am now not going to plant the blackberries and Honey Berry bushes quite yet and really, really glad I didn't get to them last weekend.

The folks who were working on our floor(s) didn't get the molding/trim-work done.  But we got tired of waiting for our LR back AND I'm not paying for another day, so Larry slowly working on it and now is putting the TV and everything back into the LR.  We should be back up and running tonight, before he has to go to bed before going into work.  We are moving the TV & couch positions from where they were.  We will see if that works.  Kinda neat!  I had missed the ability to move furniture around to "new" positions when deep cleaning every 6 months or so.   After 2 years in exact same positions (that didn't quite work), nice to try something new.  Larry not happy about the satellite receiver being right in front of all the windows, but the cable isn't long enough for it in the TV set up.  Personally, I think it will be cooler in it's own spot, but Larry doesn't agree.  I though it might be better to put the whole system in front of the window, but again, he doesn't agree.  Sometimes REALLY hate electronics...LOL.  We are actually entering a time when we won't be able to watch much again, too...  But my laptop stays hooked up next to the one futon/couch, so I will still spend time there, when not outside.  I can say this - we LOVE these futon couches.  Glad we spent the extra $$s on nice "mattress's" w/ covers that are also nice BUT can be removed and washed.  Yes, eventually the mattress's will need to be replaced, but they are lasting longer than any we've heard of before and nicely heavy duty.  Our first one is about 2-1/2 yrs old, the 2nd is about 1-3/4 zrs old and we will be getting another one for the den/fireplace room as well, sometime this year.  I would have preferred a more rustic, wooden frame but the metal ones we have are holding up NICE and they are light enough for me to move by myself (& set up as a bed, too).  They also sleep nice when laid out as a proper bed.  I do flip and turn the mattress every so often - so our "seats" don't create "holes"...    ;D

Nymbus is still with us, but again, something just seems a little off to me.  Hope it's just because I've been so ill and I'm the one "unbalanced"...  I'm not sure.  Yes, I have talked to the vet, she's seen his pics and doing a video shortly...

Okay, I'm a bit alarmed now about your mention of Nymbus.  What is "off" to you.  Please let us know what doesn't seem quite right, as others here may be able to offer up some experiences to share that might be helpful, and that's what we're all happy to do to help us all learn together.

Plus, you know we all get involved and in LOVE with our little ones here......SHARE.....SHARE

Sorry I didn't come back on and say anything last night.  I still feel he looks a bit "funny"/moving in his hind end.  He was tipping backwards and falling down...  I went out and checked on him several times during that night that I mentioned, offering goats milk and he "played" in the bowl/drank some.

Then I crashed.  Yesterday morning - he's much stronger, he's moving better AND Taff seems to have more milk.  He's nursing a lot, but that's OK - when I see that she has milk and he appears stronger.  It bothered me A LOT when he seemed "off", unbalanced and was not moving right.

Taff DID run over the top of him and knocked him down - to get away from us.  I think he could already use a chiro adjustment?  Thatt could also be the cause of him looking "off"/unbalanced?  He's much stronger and when I described everything to my "own" vet (no longer does farm/horse calls - but 1st one to answer phone on Friday), she wasn't too concerned.  He was stronger, well hydrated from what I described, pink gums, bright eyed.  Another vet (hospital w/ multiple vets) also didn't seem to concerned (I'd called them on 1st vet's recommendation & my farrier's recommendation - they ARE also on my backup ER call list) - made me not want to consider them for long w/ the lack of concern, though...  I was a little surprised?  I wondered if I was coming across as a frantic/fussy owner but made the calls while my farrier was working on ponies and I was holding them and she said no, I didn't come across that way.  She thought the baby looked good, but she's only been around mine at these ages...

Here's the non-blurry pics from yesterday afternoon.  I also always think it's so funny how some shetlands/minis are gaited and stay moving that way for a while.  He does not have trot down yet, that's for sure!

I'll bet with the good exercise he's getting now, you'll see him come all the way back.  I'm sure getting run over didn't help much, but his pictures look good, so I'd expect a good outcome from him.

He did great thru evening checks last night and was actually kicking up his heels when I went out to this morning.  I had an appointment this morning, so didn't go out until daylight.  It was nice to see everyone on a weekday in the daylight for both am/pm feedings, LOL.

I spent the afternoon with Vicki, a friend whom I've done lots of pony stuff with - checked out some changes they've made, the 2 new baby goats (well 4 if you include some older ones I hadn't met yet), got to see Koal, she showed me some equipment of ours she'll be having repaired (ripping out tree roots uncurls the "C" teeth on a spring tooth harrow, LOL)...

and this evening, everyone is doing ok.

I didn't  get pics of Koalah or Tory.  Sorry about that - phone not cooperating!

Daughter left this am, driving to MT, and is doing hourly updates.  Since that started - my phone seems to be using a lot of power.  This is the 2nd time today it's been recharged.  Sierra left Lumberton, NC at 616am and is in Illinois as of 716pm...  Not sure where/when she will be stopping for the night yet.

Well a lot has happened since March 6th, :)

Taff has steadily gained some good weight but gotten progressively wilder.  Nymbus has filled out and is moving beautifully BUT his dam has done a great job at protecting him and keeping him scared of us.  He's fast and good at hiding.  More on that later...

I did get pics taken of Koalah and Tory, but I neither had time to post them nor did I really want to.  With the bad weather we had, I got a pretty rude shock at how much weight they had both lost, too.  Since their bellys were filling out nicely AND their ribs were pretty well covered, mostly in the dark or fluffed up in the constant wind we've had, I did not notice that their toplines had dropped out.  They have had their feed increased and both are looking much better already, though they do have more weight to put on.

And Koalah went from her "hanging, flappy" udder on March 4th to this on the 13th -

It's possible that the "extra" drop along her croup is her true "jelly butt", not just weight loss.  The reason I mention that is because Thursday I was looking at her and coming back and looking again.  I checked her several times thru the night, when also checking on our grandchildren (youngest was congested again!)...  Then right after the oldest picked up to go to school, the youngest was watching TV while I took a quick shower and we were going out to breakfast.  When leaving, I always look over everyone - if I'm the one who is driving, I'll stop and look at each individual area.  When I'm not, I have the driver slow/pause and check...  Well, Koalah looked strange (I had last checked her around 5)... and I had Larry turn left out of our driveway which skirts our pastures towards the neighbors and sure enough - there were extra legs (WHITE) on the opposite side of her (just like in June 2015)...

Meet Guinness - a true born St Patrick's Day baby!  After we turned around, got back into our driveway and went into the outer pasture and drove back to the mare pasture, Larry is greeting him here as the sun breaks above the tree tops and thru the clouds.

Larry steadies him and Gwen greets him.  His ears are still wet and so is his topside (but it was brisk enough to have been dew/frost).  He had already figured out where the groceries were, his umbilicus and hooves looked good and he'd passed his first meconium, though I have yet to see him actually pee (even today).  O, and Larry was a little surprised when I commented to several people that he had 2 "ballsies"...  (he did a serious head slap, just don't think he understands how important it is to me right now and probably will be for the rest of my life!)

We ended up having a delivery of fence posts and a neighboring family come by to visit us and the ponies.

I have other photos that I haven't gotten done yet of Koalah and Guiness, Tory and Taff & Nymbus.

She kept coming over to us (but just out of touching range) while we were handling Koalah and Guinness...

A couple of checks on her during the dry part of the night, the rain started about 5 am.  Even in the rain, no baby.  Then the sun popped out this afternoon around 2pm and still no baby.  BUT when hay delivered, she went right up to one bale and instead of rubbing her bum side to side to itch like most of the ponies do, she backed up and braced her feet and seemed to move up/down vertically while butt pushing.  I will be checking her throughout the night (though probably not staying unless I have a "feeling" that I should).  Yes, I know, we could (and I think?) have a foal tonight... or tomorrow morning or maybe a week from now...

SOOOO glad to have our youngest daughter home!!

She marched right in to the pen with Taff and Nymbus and accomplished what I hadn't been able to.  With a couple of EXTRA people, when she finally got her hand on the edge of a halter strap, she HELD ON...  Taff was able to drag her, but not too badly or much...

Pics of Taff and Nymbus in the Following foals thread.

And I'll be surprised if Tory goes much longer!  She is sure wide, but that can change so quickly!!!

Yep, and today is Tuesday night and she's still holding!!  I didn't get pictures tonight, tough I DID feed in the daylight (got ALL chores done before dark, YAY!!!).  I forgot to take my phone with me to work today, it was on the charger all day.  I didn't come into the house before doing chores...

I even caught up Taff's drag line, turned her head towards me when she realized I had her line, and drew her in.  She snorted and blew like mad.  Her ears went back and forth and she danced.  Two different times she acted like she was gonna jumpr right into/over me but I caught it and snapped the halter line, causing her to back off of me.  BUT I not only touched both sides of her head and muzzle but also picked up and held both front legs.  Now if only she would let us do that W/O having to have a halter & drag line on...  sigh.  And then there was her boy.  His eyes were big - when he held still.  But he took over her running around like mad and staying far away.  O well.  You deal with it as you go.

I touched Guinness but didn't catch him either.  But he looks good!  He sure knows how to follow mom around, too.  I never did get them separated from the group, instead taking out the last two mares that may be (pretty sure 'Clipse is, maybe Cheri - pics of them again this weekend) pregnant.  They needed to be separated to get more feed and when I moved the two boys, Wizard & Echo, I put them (Cheri & 'Clipse) in the blue panel main pen next to Taff.  Maybe, I'll be able to integrate Taff w/ them and their foals later and then MAYBE move Taff out to the pasture with them this summer?  That would be good!  The other 3 mares still in this group, with Koalah & Tory,  are KoKo (had 1st baby, Koal, 2016), GG (had 1st baby, Chylly, 2016) and Flower - a maiden 1/2 shetland.

I thought, since Tory didn't foal during the night, that she might while i was out picking up a load of hay(small squares).  NOPE.

VERY ROUND, laughed myself silly when she rolled, rolled over and then ....  tried to get up.... then legs worked.  She wobbled first one way, then the other before she stuck 4 stilts out in different directions...  snorted and then shook.  Then picked her head up and  walked over to water tank.

It's almost noon, and it's finally hit 54* F.  I'm wearing 2 layers on the bottom 1/2, 3 on the top and getting read to unload/stack 20 small square bales of hay.

Two comments on Tory, one serious, one funny.

Serious: What I noticed first is the change in her eye and expression in the last two pictures. I definitely see preoccupation and inward looking. A very pointy belly too.

Funny: It's easier to see the shape change because of her white marking. Picture on 19th looks like a French poodle, facing right. Ear on top, muzzle slightly elevated to her right hip. Front leg(s) slightly pointed toward rear. Back leg(s) are behind her elbow and tail is pointed up.

In second picture, the poodle has disappeared. The front legs now point almost straight down to her pointy V belly.

Those inward eyes and changed shape of muzzle, lips and nostrils make me guess no later than just past sunset Monday.

So, Tory is still holding out on us!  Someone said she looks so miserable, but I watched her not only trot off this morning but at one point she cantered, too!!  So she can't be totally out of whack, though it was FUNNY to watch that roll the other morning.

Yesterday we went to the first Hunter Jumper show of the series held at Finally Farm in Raleigh, NC.  There, our FIRST homebred Shetland Pony mare (will be 21 years old on 20 MAY) was shown by a 7 yr old girl.  Stuffy was her normal "go get 'im" self.  They give out treats and she sure knew when the treats came out, LOL.  I didn't get a lot of good pictures, but got a couple.  The show was running about 2 hours behind (have no idea why, I wasn't there at the start), so I could only stay for about 2-1/2 of her 4 classes.  Hayden, the little girl, is doing well with her.  They've leased her for just over 2 years (I have to go look at dates on contracts), though Hayden's first intro to Stuffy was in March of 2014.

I haven't been to a lot of H/J shows (real ones) in a VERY LONG TIME.  I'd forgotten that at least here in NC, they run the classes back to back for a lot of the "groups".  So those little peeps stayed in the ring from the lead line class thru their PRE-Mini Stirrup classes.  It was kinda funny to see!  I think there were 12 little riders in the leadline class and 10 in each of the 3 classes following that (the lead line removed but the instructor/handler stayed with child/mount) that did a walk & trot.  BOY, did those people get a WORK OUT!!

I see Hayden has some things to work on, but overall, she did GREAT, her family did great ("O, my didn't realize that showing was so much "hurry up & wait"...  WE are tired!"   LOLOLOL).  And I was worried that when turned loose in that BIG arena, Stuffy would put on a bronc show.  She did have a bit of a 'tude going into the ring, but Hayden did well, circling around her instructor and putting "Stuffers" right back on the rail.  They never did break out of a trot, tho at one point it was really FAST (just short of breaking).

If I wanted to do the paperwork, Stuffy does qualify for hardship into AMHR.  She's 37/38" at the withers and shorter at the last hair of the mane.

Edited to add:

The classes she went in were:
16. Leadline
17. Pre Mini Stirrup Walk Trot Equitation
18. Pre Mini Stirrup Walk Trot Pleasure
19. Pre Mini Stirrup Walk Trot Hunter Under Saddle

The next show in the series is April 29th, but they just aren't sure they are going to be able to do that.  We shall see.

Her grandmother, the person that leased Stuffy from us, was asking about a larger pony for her to graduate from Stuffy (Hayden is growing FAST now).  We will discuss it further, but I'm thinking they may purchase Sami, Stuffy's 1/2 brother out of an Arab mare.  She'd be into her teens before she outgrew him for riding...  He's not really trained at all though, so they aren't sure about that.

Wonderful pictures and Stuffy looks grand!

Tory may be holding out, but the "V" pictures are great for our albums!  She's go very soon, I bet!

That sounds fine, you'll have to come up with a special name!

That sounds fine, you'll have to come up with a special name!

My AQHA mare was an April Fool's Day baby, her name was Rebs Foolish Duster, I called her Foolish.  Her sire was Adobe Rebel, can't remember her dam's name off the top of my head.

Here she is with her second foal, Rebel.

"Like"

Paula , how cool your able to go and see some of the wonderful fur kids you have bred. Ive felt the same after seeing my racehorses retire. Its better to me seeing them go onto wonderful homes and in new adventures in life, often eventing and dressage ect.

Great photo Chanda :)

At 5 AM this morning, I went out to feed.

NO BABY and Tory was pushing right up against the other ponies while getting her share of the feed!

At 630, I leave for work.  I hit a wall of rain!  I wonder ....

By 700, I'm clocked in - dealing with the folks bringing in their dogs and cats to be spayed.  Then I'm in front of the counter - helping to actually bring pets into the back. Weighing, checking gums/teeth & capillary refill times; then putting them in the next kennel.

By 0830, I'm in my little hole in the wall (supposed to be an office).  Becca had already checked Voice Mails and had them in time order on the list, so I opened my Vet program, opened the Card Pointe Program that allows us to run Credit/Debit cards for payment and started the first calls...

At 903 am, got the text from Larry that the dogs (4 of them) had dug out of the back yard and were gone on a run.  A few minutes later, got the text that all were back except Lady (fostered pitt mix, spayed, girl) - whom he felt was probably enjoying the neighbor's hog lagoon again (OMG!).

At 906 am, Larry sent the text that there was "no Tory baby".

Then at 1005 am, he sent one asking if I'd gotten Baby Chick feed for the new ducks.  It was easier to return that text w/ a call while in-between calls of my own at work... call was 1 minute, 16 seconds.

>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>

At 1037 - he sent text saying "I was sitting, now out to check brand new baby..."

At 1043 - I got this one from Sierra (who was coming home from a meeting after her night shift).  I cropped it and added the name info tonight...

aAANNNNDDDDD now we know why Tory was SO BIG!!  This little girl is HUGE!  This is Tory's first filly since 2007 (her first foal).  she's had 5 colts in a row.  Still playing with names - but along the theme of April Fool's day (even if a little early) - thinking "Trickster" and calling her "Trixie".  May not stick - not sure yet (hope it does, not that I've done up 11 photos with that name... LOL).  All I could actually think of was "...she foaled in the DAYLIGHT, mid-morning..."

O, and to follow the texting theme -

@ 1046 - larry sent - "Girl baby.Lots of white."

@ 1047 - "First poop complete"

@ 1047 - "Yes".  Sierra's response to my "Filly"?

@ 1054 - Larry sent - "Touched her all over.  Tory still VERY round.  Makes wonder if theres not another one except she passed the placenta."

I commented that "KOalah stayed round, too" - then "We'll check her later" & "More pic"?

@ 1128 - I hadn't heard anything else from either, so I sent - "Everything OK?"

@ 1129 - Larry sent " Yep.  Everybody is good to go.  Groceries located and everything."

I sent "OK, Pics?"

To which he replied @ 1130 - "Sierra took a bunch.  I thought she sent them to you."

@ 1152 I sent - "Only 1."

Then I didn't hear anything else.  At all...

When I got home, had to run to BR.  Then changed shoes and didn't change anything else (I mean 2 dogs had pee'd down my scrub shirt, so what was a dirty mare/foal???)...

And I got to see our little girl (who isn't so little - she's bigger than Guinness who is 11 days old today).  I fed the others & closed them into the pen.  Tory then started up to check out feed, if her "kid" wondered off, she stopped and waited before plodding on up.  I fed her in a tub on the ground, wet...

Here's some pics Sierra took this am - the first one was what she saw when she arrived home - she took this one at 1032 -

Thanx, All!!

I have been tremendously bothered by who she looked like...  I finally figured it out - tho it turns out that she has more white than he did.  She reminds me of her sire's full brother, born on 27 January 2000.

Frosty was born 2 days after we had a BUNCH of snow in NC, but a lot of it had already melted off in those 2 days.  But you can figure out his name, LOL.

Hard to believe, Madira is now a step-mom (to two wonderful children)...

Well, I separated both Cheri & 'Clipse from the SR mare group and they are in the larger of the two blue panel pens butted up to Taff's smaller pen.

Thinking 'Clipse, definitely, but have no idea when.  She is another that lost a lot of weight with the hay situation, doesn't appear to have lice (at least last time I checked!! more than a week ago now) and is picking up in weight but it all seems to be going directly to her belly!  So we shall see.

Cheri ??  I just can't tell.  Will be worming ponies this weekend - many are due to be done, others aren't but will be anyway...  Then all that are treated for lice will be wormed again in (I think it's 1 week?), will have to check.

He ran with the mares thru the end of July, so I'm thinking could go all the way to July/Aug before foaling? I want to say that I last saw them both showing to Toro in mid-June of last summer, though.  Funny, never saw Koalah or Tory teasing to him nor saw any covers by him on any of the mares.

****

I purposely covered Bell with Echo last May, but she's been coming into season regularly and no baby bump developing, so, thinking not pregnant and just as well with everything.  Torn.  Don't need to breed.  BUT Bell is really getting up there in age...  and I DID want one out of her with AJ's lines, so may breed her the next time I see her in heat (to Echo) and see what it takes to baby her thru another pregnancy...

Hmmm... Well 2 foals definitely on the way!  Thinking 'Clipse is going to foal in the next 1-2 weeks based on her udder development.  She does need to put on more weight and I'd already increased their feed.  Both 'Clipse and Cheri are getting Chaffehay almost free choice (not quite - they'd eat only that and I can't put out a 50# bale every day for them right now), alfalfa pellets.  They are getting there, have a ways to go, though.

Here's pics of 'Clipse before her "spa day" -

Can't say no anymore to Cheri - first I saw MOVEMENT (& I usually am never blessed with that) AND she's developing her udder.  Cheri's foal will be here in 2-4 weeks, I think.

You might try adding some calf manna to their feed, too, that might help add some calories.   ;D

Do you mean the original Calf manna?  or the newer Calf Manna meant for horses?

I've not tried the original calf manna in years, but on trying the newer one for horses, found that in a 6 month period it didn't really seem to make a difference for anyone that was put on it.  I used it in 08 (larger ponies/full size horses) and again in 2010/2011 (shetlands).

When I was a teen/young adult - we used the original Calf Manna and LOVED IT.  I will check it out and let you know how they all do.

****

On the hay issue, I had a neighbor severely putting down the guy whose hay I have been mostly purchasing since June 2015 (or so?).  But I purchased some small squares from him (choked on his prices!) and gave it a trial (before investing in his much more expensive round bales).  Most that were offered - sniffed at it, picked thru some & nibbled - then turned right back to the "brown" round bales that we had.  Of the ones who ate it a little better (but not like they would normally! and still went back to the "brown" hay), each had watery, foul smelling diarrhea w/i 12 hours.  I will not be purchasing his much more expensive hay that our ponies don't like or appear to do well on.

I HAVE gotten other small squares from out of our area.  Same prices, longer distances to go to get but yes, better quality (or at least prettier to look at).  I bought the one guy out and he won't have any more until June...  I will run out before then, even with only feeding a handful of ponies this hay.  I have another supplier or two to check with.

Overall, the hay that I've gotten from the guy who doesn't spray any herbicides, while not pretty and yes, a problem with the Foxtail, the ponies did very well on - even when it looked not so good or weedy(I've only gotten a couple of bales that were moldy and he completely replaced those - others haven't).  When I've gone back to purchasing from previous suppliers - every new load of hay brought a new round of nasty diarrhea.  That was something we dealt with at the other property the last several years we were there. There were some that got their tails (and bums) washed fairly regularly - they just seemed to stay gross.  A couple of times we missed it (not just me) and the farrier would get busy and OMG, what a mess that became!  When we were talking about the different issues on the hay available here - she did seem surprised when we went back over pictures of ponies and hay - overall, there's been no to very little diarrhea here since January 2015.

Sometimes these things are so interesting...  sometimes such a pain.

It's my understanding that even the original Calf Manna changed it's formula, but I honestly don't know as I've not used it enough to notice.
I had bought some for Bliss to bump up the protein in the feed she's getting and in hopes of enticing her to eat, at the time I bought it it didn't work; I think she was dealing with ulcers while being weaned and then again when I moved Spotty.  THe girls get a bit of calf manna in their afternoon feed, as I'm using up that bag of Calf Manna.    [If you didn't know, it now comes in 10# bags, so you can try it without buying a 50# bag to find out they don't like it.  great option for someone with only one mini or wanting to try it out.]

I did get some of Taff & Nymbus.  Hard to believe he's a month 1/2 old now, pushing towards 2 months!

Thank you!

Today, the younger granddaughter and i treated 9 ponies for lice and wormed them.  Will update that in the lice post on general.

The other two girls are holding on.  I will work on getting pics of them tomorrow.  I did take a lot of pics today - still working on them.  After spending 5 hours outside, Gwen and I cleaned up and rested for a bit, then we got ready to go out.  Met the family peeps - there were 12 of us - at a Japanese restaurant and had a ball for my belated B-Day bash.  I have never been to a Japanese  restaurant like that it was totally different experience.  Good food, too.  But mostly family fun!
