Title: No milk?
Post by: Rocklone on November 11, 2016, 04:55:01 AM
Over the past week I've thought charms bag has got smaller. Last time I tried to get some I got a squirt from one booby. Today the bags very small and nothing coming out. Meadow is fine and thriving but I dunno if she gets anything when she suckles. Could it just be comfort? She eats hay and grass and feed totally fine so at 4.5 months I'm not actually concerned but just wondering if anyone else knows of a mare just drying up this early? Charms good weight and fed stud balancer and condition cubes and not starved if you get me.

Yes, I used to wean my foals at 4 months, and one year I was stunned by two mares who had already weaned their foals, when I went to separate them.  This was their pattern apparently, as they did this each year they had foals at foot.  Guess momma knows best!

As you say, by 4 months they're eating feed and hay, so all is well.  No worries.

I haven't seen it personally, but have heard of mares shutting down the milk bar and weaning themselves.  No idea the how of it.

Well they have never been close, Charms a good momma don't get me wrong, but shes not overly attached. I think its made for a good independent foal though, she does not stress out if shes suddenly alone. Weaning her totally is going to be a breeze! Got my P tests today, so ill be doing them at some point lol
