Grrr just found out I have two nights away with work. She will be about 3 weeks away from due date but we all know mares don't read the "it would suit me to foal on this day" memo! It will be up to my little watchers cause I'll probably not have wifi either :(

I told her owner I'll be putting my camera online and she will be called if I'm at work haha!

She's not due until July! My friends mare went four weeks early last year though. But she was covered and came back in so was a possible first covering and just being a hoe. Charm was covered one time accidentally before she came to banner but didn't take and vet said scan was the correct age for the dates so I've no concerns there.

Was messing with the camera today. Charm is a very photogenic mare even when she is the size of a whale with an attitude to rival a dragon.

Wonderful picture, and love her deep, beautiful color!

So who is all "wrapped up" for showing, I presume?

Hope not! She's not 300 days yet even lol but if by some way she got pregnant form one covering before she came to me (owners stallion got in) she would be due one cycle before (so June) but based on the size of the pregnancy at the initial scan it was NOT older than what it should have been. Colour will tell becaus he was Tobiano

He's black and white.

This is the scan she was 21 days I think I would assume at nearly two month gone the scan would have looked a bit more like a foal

When we were doing scans of our mares, our vet was able to do a measurement of the ... femur? ...  I think.  If she could get a good angle.  Then, based on that measurement, she was able to guesstimate how far along the mare was.  We had one mare that the measurements (3 scans) never matched my breeding dates.  She foaled based on my breeding dates - but a really TINY baby.  She made up for it though and matured almost as tall as her sire.  She was a first foal for that mare.

As to the colors - all 3 of the horses are black based w/ two carrying bay.  That means that if the foal isn't buckskin or pali, w/o spots that it could still be by the other stallion...  :(  But time will tell.  I'm crossing my fingers you get your buckskin or pali baby from your pair!!

I know now that I hate it when there is any ? as to the sire of a foal.  Was quite surprised to find the black and white colt 2 weeks ago.  Our 2 yr old stallion was busy - and I don't have any notes of another fence break out during the time frame would have needed to be?  So - thru our fence?  OUCH...  Also now makes me wonder about our chestnut tobi filly - will be having her parentage tested before we do papers - may have to do another amended stallion report.  GAK.  May turn out that our 2 yr old black tobi stallion is the sire of the chestnut tobi filly as well!

Have started bringing charm in now. She's 2 weeks off 300 days but I think it's time to get her used to it. Also gets me used to waking up at night to check as I set my alarm for once a night. Will up that to twice next week then at 300 days every 2 hours

Post by: dcwolcott on May 30, 2016, 04:39:23 PM
Well keep us posted with pictures!!  When they really got close I used to sleep in the stall with the tricky ones!  Their movement when they "dropped" for foaling would wake me up, always in time!!  Never had one foal standing up -- I guess that would have been something to think about, but my girls were always laying down for birthing.  Good thing!

Also for those wanting to watch on camera now.

You have to open internet explorer or download eseenet+ app from Apple.

For Internet explorer:

1) go to http://www.e-seenet.com
2) download the file it tells you (I'm sure it's safe I use it but if you don't want to d/l anything please don't I won't mind at all!
3) in device id put 213148699
4) in user name put admin
5) hit enter and click ok when it tells you there is no passwordh

I'm sure it goes without saying to respect the privacy of anyone you see on camera. I don't mind screen shots of charm if she's doing something cute or whatever but please don't screen shot people :)

My contact is +44 7541 820800

Thanks so much guys. I'm so excited now

I usually go to sleep/bed at 12am and have my alarm set to check at 3am and usually up at 7am for work (uk time)

I work 24 hr shifts but should be able to check overnight at the usual times. I think next week I'll start doing two checks.

Oh, she is looking lovely!!!!  Udder progressing nicely, nicely round, and she still look a bit tight, so she should start with her elongation as we get closer.  At least we have a wonderful "start" point for the elongation.

I'll be watching too, and have to try everything out when I get home tonight.

So fun having these girls to watch!!

So a few people reckon charms going to foal before 330 days (July 12th) I'm away 21-23 June so I'm terrified it will be then!! I'm only a few miles up the road but I won't be able to leave.

Charm seems a lot more settled tonight she didn't call out for the others when I brought her in and just seemed to accept it. She does adapt fast I'll give her that.

No new pics I forgot lol

Still having udders swell and go back down everyday. No other signs. Foal doesn't move much these days!

Okay she's not as settled today/night. I hate having to keep her in she's like a caged animal but it's the only way I can watch her when I'm working. It's only Two days a week though so the rest of the time she should be out all day!

Sometimes we have to do what's best for the animal -- even if they don't like it.  Don't feel bad, you're doing what is best for her and that little one!!

What's the site again?  I had problems, I remember, when I tried it the first time, but perhaps Marty or my other IT guy can help me figure it out, and then I'll upload it at work, and just make it a small window to watch because of the crisis.  I have 3 monitors at work, and hoping I can just hide the "window" !!

Not much change but her moods are mental. She was screaming her head off for Goldie tonight so I had to put her in. Show tomorrow so the boys were in too which is maybe what set her off - they're a noisy pair. I'm considering putting her in the double stable with Goldie while I'm away so she has company but can still be watched and not bullied/harmed should anything happen.

Awful show.

I got there in great time, had banner ready, go in first for a condition class, win that, judge says he is a really lovely "pony" so i think great, he likes him. I walk out, and turn my head for two seconds and boom - two more classes have been done and the gates shut on my "stallion" class. AFTER the gate was closed, they asked if anyone else was in it and i was like yes...and i've been standing here the whole time waiting to hear the class called!?!?!?!?!

So i was accepted in late, but the judge didn't even look at Banner, and didn't place him. The winner was a man who went on to win everything (but i beat him last show, and would have this time if i was not late) so i felt very annoyed at that, and that noone else said this was my class knowing it was.

Anyway, took banner back to the trailer, and pulled thriller off, quick, cause i knew they were really flying through the classes. By the time i got his halter on, i was being waved over and i literally ran the 20 paces to the ring. Get in and huffed around, and pulled in first. Judge just said " you really need to get to the ring faster and i wouldn't want to see that pony with any more weight" he was then pulled in 3rd in a solid colour class.

So all in all, a sour day for me. I just felt so rushed and did not enjoy any of it. There was 10 classes each with up to 6 horses or more, and three championships. All over in an hour and 10mins. I don't even have any photos that i want to post!

To top it all off i had glass in my hand and was in pain the entire time but had no time to treat myself.

Oh no! Sorry your day was such a mess! :( that sure does sound pretty rushed !  I've never actually done any shows with the minis (just got my first one this spring ) and I was more into barrel racing with my appys at local rodeos,  but I used to tag along when my friend did halter shows with her Arabians and I noticed how snippy some of the judges are! Just remember your boys are super handsome and there will be better shows with happier judges (hopefully ! ) :) plus you get to meet your new foal soon so that should put a smile on your face!

Keep us posted!!

Post by: Rocklone on June 18, 2016, 07:24:06 PM
Thriller did well at the show, always does, his name is on the shield for the last three years! I was just sooo so mad that i didn't get considered properly for the Stallion class because i got there late. I understand it, cause if i was in it i would NOT have been happy that a late comer got placed - i was just so angry the steward didnt call out the classes. I was standing right there, but did not get that it was my class. im always alone showing, so i don't have someone standing with a book telling me what class is on, i just have to wing it.

Oh well. Next class is a massive potential for me - i love this next show always have. I don't know why, cause i have never won ANYTHING at it! So if i get ANY red ribbons (red is 1st here) i will be happy.

Me either. Usually it is about 3 hours. We usually start and are done for lunch. Apparently this judge had another class and just wanted to get through ours as fast as possible. Its my fault for not knowing the classes and that but its so hard to try and keep track when your in out in out.

Well today I got enough fluid for a milk test. It's in the 40% likely to foal in the next few days but not sure how much I believe it. Tummy has dropped a bit, she had a relaxed vulva but only for like an hour then it went back normal. Shes ravinous and won't stop eating she even goes to her feed bowl to lick it now and again and I had to top up her hay tonight which I've not had to do lately. Just keep praying she holds on for two more nights please x

See you all Thursday!

hmm, confusing...  I'm reading that she's between 40 & 10 % chance of foaling in the next 12 hours!  I have seen them "go down" like that, though, before they foal.

***************

But then, when I used a foal/mare milk test kit - it showed the mare shouldn't be anywhere close to foaling.  I was glad as we'd had a lot of rain and her stall had had water flow under the edges - getting every thing wet and nasty (plus she was just a "nasty"/unhappy stall pony).  I'd purchased the new bedding but before I could get it unloaded, I'd sat down on the couch to have a drink or to eat and I fell asleep.  I remember being tired - that was the year that was so stressful w/ me being sick & a series of MRIs tracking some things going on for me (still getting those btw) & pony girlfriend's father being sick and her providing all his care and me doing some stuff to help - I was flat out running on empty and almost every time I sat -would "pass out" - sometimes almost literally (hubby/girls would check on me).  Larry called me from work, I woke up and ran out to check mare - she's ok.  So, I put her out in the damp, sandy round pen while I unload the bedding from the truck and strip/bed the stall.  WHILE I'm doing that - she foals in the round pen.  DARN MARE!

That was 2013 and was Echo - our now 3 yr old blk/wht colt that is the sire of "Koal".

No no i'm happy for it to stay cooking for another little while yet haha! I got some PH strips too, just for fun. How often should i test her...am/pm or once a day until it gets more serious? Ive only got a few of teh other ones so i don't want to go mad on them and might stick to every other day.

Twice a day is fine, unless you see things starting to drop.  We've had mares go from 7.4 to delivery in one day!  Then, we've had some go down to 6.4 and hold for a few days.  It's just how crazy they want us to be.  But once you start seeing things drop, let us know, and we'll be looking for other signs to help us gauge what she's doing and how fast she might be moving along!

Praying for a safe foaling of this precious little one!   ;pray ;pray

Udder is up today and harder. Milk is more creamy, testing 7.5ph and 40% foaling probability.

I think the odds are good.  Remember, those foal coats can be very deceiving!  She may lighten up once she blows that coat!

She is just beautiful!!  And congratulations on a filly!  She's be just lovely in the show ring!

It's still quite surreal! This big wait and suddenly boom it's here. I'm still in shock.

Charms lying down and getting up a lot she must be in pain. I was going on Tuesday to get injections cause all tests said not ready! I'm going to milk her when I get home and test just for the fun of it lol

Well, you'll have a good record here for next year.  Remember we said to be watchful, because they can drop from the 7's (7.2-7.4) in just one day and foal! Apparently, that was her plan all along -- keep us guessing and then WHAM!!!!

These mares can be so tricky!  But the filly is gorgeous!

I always use the injectable Banamine, but not using the needle, just squirt it in their mouth!  It tastes awful, but with all the mucous membranes in their mouth, it gets to work REALLY fast!

CONGRATULATIONS again on a BEAUTY!

I have no chance of getting any of that today I'm just worried she'll colic or something. She's not really eating hay but ate a scoop of warm beet this morning.
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: dcwolcott on June 26, 2016, 09:24:07 AM
Actually, some warm mushy food is the very best thing to help her get her system started.  Don't worry about the hay, she'll get back to that soon enough.  But nice, soft mushy food is just the thing!
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Rocklone on June 26, 2016, 10:31:44 AM
Yes she'll get another one later on too. She looks slightly more comfortable but I'm still waiting on a poo.

This is even more stressful than waking on the foal!
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Chanda on June 26, 2016, 11:00:35 AM
A little fresh grass might help too, it's moist and tasty; just go easy if she's not used to it.
She's been through a lot and probably won't be interested in hay til she has a little banamine on board, or whatever pain reliever you have available to take the edge off for her.
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Rocklone on June 26, 2016, 11:11:55 AM
She's eating hay and up for a while now. She looks much better. Still want a poo but then she didn't really eat last night - but I didn't notice at the time!
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Chanda on June 26, 2016, 11:37:07 AM
Pregnant mares tend to clean out their systems right before foaling, so it might be awhile before you see the mare poop.  As long as she seems comfortable now and is taking care of her baby and drinking and working on eating, she'll probably be fine.
The foal should do her business fairly soon after foaling; get up, get a meal, then the plumbing should start working shortly after that.
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: dcwolcott on June 26, 2016, 11:48:15 AM
I thought you were waiting on a foal poo.  As Chanda says, these mares empty out their systems before delivery, so it may take a while for things to get moving again.  Don't worry, everything will start to work, especially now that you say she is up and eating.  For some mares, it can take quite a while.

But, we will take many more pictures of this precious little one!!

No foal had pooed twice now so I'm happy with that. Been 12 hours for charm. She's happy and eating though in fact she's starving lol
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: dcwolcott on June 26, 2016, 03:10:22 PM
Yes, her whole system is empty, but that makes foaling so much easier for them.  She'll be going before you know it!

Well, that's how our one house cat ended up with the name "Bob", we just couldn't figure out a name for him, so we started calling him Bob, and it stuck, 9 years later he is still Bob.  [Picture in 2007, shortly after he came home.]

Dog gonnit!  Well, save up and do it over the winter, and be ready for spring, if possible.  That way if the vet finds something that is "stubborn" to treat, you'll have time and won't waste it in the spring!

Banner won't be here then so I won't be breeding her unless I find a nice stallion locally, of which there are few. I could possibly take her to him it's a few hours but could be worth it if Meadow is as good as I feel she is :p

I might cover her once more at the end of this season just, third time lucky and all but if nothing happens it won't be a great loss but if it does then super. It's last chance to use banner as my own stud before I would have to pay stud fees so may as well lol

Well charms well and truly out of season she was bucking at banner before he got near and she emptied her bladder in anger lol so no covering there. He covered twice in a row yesterday but I don't think he had a happy ending so to speak and she was not very happy getting covered at all. so that's that the gods have decided for me!

I suppose that's that. Meadow is to be unique :)

Do you pasture breed or hand breed?  Sometimes just letting them run together will do the trick!

Hmm, you've had the mares checked.  Have you thought to have Banner checked?

So sorry they don't seem to be getting pregnant.  That's really disappointing!!

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the costs for that would be now - the last time I had that done was in 2000 or 2001 - after a groin/sheath/penis injury to our stallion.  He did break their Colorado AV, that was quite entertaining!  It took 6 months for him to return to normal - for the test it took some real work to get him interested at all in breeding/mounting to be collected.  Though the warmth of the AV soon fixed that issue, LOL.

He seemed to become interested in mares and fertile again at the same time - that was how I determined he was ready for breeding and the first mare covered was US in foal at 21 days.

Oh banners fine he got my other mare pregnant after a wash out. Charm must just need a wash out too after having Meadow - it's quite late in the season for that now so I'll have to wait until next year to do that. It was a very short season so it may have been the last one of the year.

Normally I would but not with the foal just in case. I know charm and know banner and know they don't get on the very best - banner would be a pest and charms handy with those back legs!

So i deleted the last thread cause i assumed that it was done and dusted.

But i also expected Charm to have one more season! She was covered properly for a week. Then the next season lasted three days, and she was very reluctant to cover - but finally let him do it twice in a 20min period - however i don't think he had a happy ending.

Shes now a week "late" so i think a scan would be beneficial to be sure.

Haha sorry no news. She's not been in season again but a few times I've seen her and thought she was and when I looked at the dates it was when she was "due" and that's how she was last year too. So I'm quite sure she's pregnant. I'll have her scanned when I've got the time, Meadow is due vaccinations soon so timing will work with that.

Do you have difficulties finding a vet that will do scans on the minis in your area? Seems that large animal vets only do...well...LARGE animals anymore. If it's not small animals that are traditional household pets or cattle and horses, it appears that the veterinary training is lacking. Kind of a sad commentary on how far from the Earth humans have move if you ask me. :-(

When I needed my mares ultrasounded, my equine vet didn't have the equipment, but said she would have been willing to do them if she did.  So, I told her I would be willing to pay for the "wand" for the internal ultrasounds as they were important to my program, and I guess "shamed" her into it, because she bought the piece, and then used my herd for "practice" at no charge for the next year.  I had each mare ultrasounded 3 times that year so I could watch the pregnancies progress, and the twins disappear/absorb.  Fascinating!

Nope my local vets are always very obliging. With Goldie, he could not get in far enough to see the entire foal, but we clearly saw a spine.

Last time charm was scanned, there was a lovely picture of the blob that was meadow lol

Well if the test is accurate, shes pregnant! I would say from the colour and what not she more likley took the first time, making her about 85-90days. Remember how i said the last time she covered it really was not "proper" ? Well im really thinking that it was just submissive covering and hormones from foal and pregnancy and season all rushing about in there making her seem in season. Ill be getting her scanned at some point, but this has been fun anyway.

Last cover of proper season was 27th August, another cover happened on 17th September, just one and i dont think she was happy about it.

Diane, is there any way you can explain some of the letters on the AMHA pdf you sent me?

S (sex obviously)    CL?    BT?    ST(status)     HT(height)
                           SBA   PD

Title: Re: Rocklone 2017 - Charm
Post by: dcwolcott on November 23, 2016, 03:52:06 PM
Yes, of course.

S = Sex
CL = Color
BT - Blood Typed; PD = Parent qualified by DNA testing; PQ = sire, dam and foal have been blood typed and
       parentage has been qualified
ST - Status, i.e. DC = deceased; RV = revoked; OV = oversized
HT = height

Then Color abbreviations: I'll attach the color abbreviation list so you can interpret all the abbreviations and the "HELP" list of what everything means.

For example:  SBA = Solid Bay

Apparently, I have to upload the help pages in multiple files, as my home scanner does not have a "condense" mode and the file was too large to upload in one file.

I can combine the 3 files together, but I don't know how they will merge -- what order, etc.

It says:  This function will merge the messages of two topics into one topic. The messages will be sorted according to the time of posting. Therefore the earliest posted message will be the first message of the merged topic.

Shall I try it or leave it?  It would all be in one file, but it might be a bit confusing at first, until we start replying and answering.

Let me know if you'd like me to try it!

~~Diane

At 100+ days, do horses just begin to realize that they're pregnant like women do? Do they act different? React differently to their environment? Have morning sickness??? LOL

I've only foaled out a 1/2 dozen biggies, and that was way back in the last century. Even when I was boarding at Paula's, I only discovered foals after the fact. So I love watching here. Perhaps one day an in-foal mare will follow me home from work one day........
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: dcwolcott on December 28, 2016, 06:18:15 PM
Never knew on with morning sickness, but yes, their personalities can change several times over the course of the pregnancy -- especially near the end.  I always use a "change" in personality to help us pinpoint toward delivery, because some can become quite loving, or quite "dependent" and want you around, and other that have been loving can suddenly start hiding from you, or reacting more aggressively if you try to handle them.

We'll just cross our fingers that a pregnant mare follows you home so you can share with us!!
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: paintponylvr on December 29, 2016, 12:08:41 PM
Charm looks GREAT.

I agree with Diane.

Koalah gets big and "ponderous".  Koalah has had 5 foals for us (4 from our stallions, 1 purchased in utero).  She "puts up with" being groomed - she doesn't really seem to like it or dislike it any different time.  When I was driving her a lot - she seemed to REALLY enjoy getting out on the road - even when heavily in foal.  Her attitude & step always changed after her harness put on - both single and pair driving.

Tory also gets big and she becomes just short of "loving" (remember she is one of the "wild child" ponies that is such a terrible one to catch).  I can now catch her out in the open pasture (SOMETIMES) - but never by approaching her head.  She does like to be groomed - especially in her last days before her delivery(s).  She has only had two foals for us, so far.

This last year - both KoKo and Kechi, both 2009 models & maidens, became spooky and "weird" right before foaling.

KoKo - though we got her when she was only 3-1/2 MONTHS old and has had a tremendous amount of handling and even became a driving pony - became very aggressive and nasty after Koal was born.  She was like that (had to be caught and tied up herself FIRST, before catching her son) up until he was a full 60 days old.  Makes me wonder if her dam in Iowa was the same way before we got KoKo...  Didn't realize when I got her that she was so young - that's another story.  I will have to do that one in full one of these days - before I forget that trip!!

Kechi - well she was "funny" when she came back home in February 19.  Foaled May 13.  Her illness, staying alive, still nursing her foal and then weaning her foal - she hasn't changed.  In fact, she's very "ugly" out in the pasture.  Pouncing on and attacking any/all of the ponies that come close to her.  Doesn't appear to have any friends out there - she's always pacing the fence or eating hay alone...  Makes me sad.  She was always a hard one to catch - especially after a series of injections as a 7 month old foal.  Now - she's a whole lot worse in many ways.  I am going to be changing all the "youngsters" over to oats (may later change everyone over - this is a trial and study on a small group of ponies first) and am studying on herbal supplements for Kechi right now.  May actually have a panel run on her to see if she's missing major things in her diet and that's the problem???  Her hooves trimmed yesterday - she is still having some issues with laminae in her hooves...  AND she was sore after being trimmed (for the first time).

GG's dam (Bell) is easy to deal with at foaling.  Bell enjoyed being groomed when pregnant AND driving while pregnant. GG herself has always been a pretty laid back pony.  Her pregnancy - she seemed to stand with "dreamy" eyes alot.  She was GREAT with having both herself and her foal handled - even though she was a maiden, too.  She even got her first bareback and under saddle rides while having her days old filly at her side.  Then the granddaughters quit riding :(

None of the maiden mares have been bred for 2017.

Have other mares - these are just ones I'm thinking of right now... O - can't forget Stuffy!!!

Stuffy was our very first Shetland foal - born in 1996.  Appeared fine w/ maiden dam when stepdad had my children out w/ mare & foal, taking pics.  Came into town where I worked - kiddies had already named the baby.  By the time I arrived there hours later, baby down & in bad shape - no cell phones (still no signal in that part of Montana 20 yrs later).  Stepdad and my kids still gone, neighbor kindly hooked his trailer up and took me, mare & foal to vet hospital.  Foal treated, lived.  Mare milked out until dry - never developed an interest in foal (actually tried to kill her several times) - taken home while foal stayed for another 24 hours.  Foal released & raised in our kitchen for 20 days on Foal Lac from a bowl - traveling back & forth from our place to parents place (day care) until she wouldn't stay laying down in cab of truck anymore.  Then she graduated to a bucket of milk constantly left hanging in the pen next to her sire.  Road cut thru parent's property and neighbors kept stopping to ask what the deal was w/ that stuffed animal in the pen next to the road.  Her name became Stuffy instead of the other one.  Fast forward to 2001 - lease family said she was GREAT w/ her 1st foal.  Then 2010 when she finally had her 1st for us - also wonderful.  A riding/lesson pony thru her pregnancy AND a driving pony after foaling.  2013 really stands out when our grand daughters were out just a few hours after she foaled - I LOVE the time I spent w/ the 5 (daughter, too) of them that day.

Notice where the "baby", Gwen, is - she's just turned 14 months old (yes, mom is just outside the cropped pic) -

I swear Stuffy is giving Gracie permission to love on her new son -

Ok so I've just had a word with the ptest seller and they believe the test is not so accurate when the mare has a foal at foot. So we could really be looking at an empty mare here.

Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Holly on January 12, 2017, 05:34:22 PM
Did they say why it wouldn't be as accurate with a foal a foot? My understanding was that the mares urine has increased estrone sulfate levels, so the presence of estrone sulfate stops the test from turning clear. If that's the case would you get false positive or false negatives?
Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Rocklone on January 13, 2017, 03:13:37 AM
A false positive. She was early in the pregnancy but the test went very dark very fast which means mid to late term so it could have been the foal
Hormones. I don't know how long they have to be weaned for the hormones to go aaay.

Boobs are still up a little more than i thought they would be after weaning and she still has liquid, but i don't think at this stage it is going to stop so i will just need to be extra vigilant with her! From last year, one thing i found was she elongated for one day about a day or so before foaling, so ill be looking out for that!

Good to see your mind's at rest about being in season. How far along is she? Far enough that you'd get a false negative and make yourself MORE paranoid??

She first covered on August 4th for a few days, for the first time after foaling but did not take. Her next proper cover was 22nd august - 27th in hand ans she was normal season very willing etc. After that she showed mild signs of season on September 17th, but was not happy to cover in hand, eventually let Banner and her loose to pasture and she let him cover her twice in a 20min period after trying to kill him a few times, but i dont honestly think he finished the job either time and she never seemed happy or willing and that was the only time she let him near her and i only let them together for about an hour before they were separated so that was the ONLY cover. She never came back in season..

I thought she may have been in last week, but she didn't show any interest in the stallions at the show.

SO in answer to your actual question, she could still test normally..but she could be due july, or august.

Ive felt a foal move, or im crazy. I know now that if in three weeks she shows signs of season ive wasted a few months thinking shes preg, but if she doesnt then that will also tell. Shes very much fat and pregnant looking, but could just be baby fat from last yer haha

Ok now we have one down one to go my focus will move to charms pregnancy!

She can be due on any of these dates:
18th June
July 5th
July 30th

I have to decide when to vaccinate her but I'm not going to do it until four weeks before the second cycles due date as that's the time I think she took.

Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Rocklone on June 01, 2017, 11:53:30 PM
I only take that pic as a precaution, last year she elongated for one pic....then was all scrunched again - and foaled! She gets a "long" lady part when she lies down.

She gave very little indication last year apart from maybe her milk changing slightly. She was always lying down at 5AM so this year ill be watching her actions - just like Goldie. Godlie always had a "moment" around 10-11PM and foaled at 10.30PM.

Earliest breeding date places Charm at 300 days today. Over the weekend i plan to clear out the foaling stable and put her under cameras :)

Bags gone up again. She's got those "chicken fillets" goldie had 😂 And elongating at the back. Not dropped at all and still wide as a house.

It made me think about foals bred back to back... does it effect the gestation? Like would they speed up haha
I'm confident she'll make 315 again but I had thought she bred second cycle! Oh well. She's happy enough. Seems to lie down around 7/9pm. So fingers crossed she foals at that time!

Title: Re: Rocklone 2016 - Charm
Post by: Rocklone on June 24, 2017, 09:13:16 AM
I don't even know where to begin. Her water broke at 11:50 and I waited about 15mins with nothing coming out then phoned her owner to come round. In the mean time I went in and could feel two hooves but no head. When owner got her she quickly deduced the legs were upside down, and I went in again to have a feel about and it was clear it was back legs, so foal was breach. Owner stayed with her while I called the neighbour and vets.

During the time we were waiting for them to come we tried several times to manipulate the foal and I could feel two hocks, knees and hips and then the front feet but I just couldn't get it to move in the right direction during contracts. Neighbour arrived just before vet and he too tried to manipulate it and by this time charm was exhausted.

Vet got here and had it pulled out in seconds cause I think neighbour had manipulated it enough so vet just had to get the hips out. He said the foal had been dead for a few days by this stage maybe longer so it was stiff, hence not being able to manipulate it so well.

Judging from the size and development I think he was about 300days and well formed in 99% of his body but his middle part was quite compressed and joints seemed quite large but again it's hard to tell. I just keep hoping there is nothing I did or didn't do that caused her to go prem. she was flu/tet vaccinated in the 4th June and wormed with ivermectin on 14th may. She was getting a stud balancer since May. I keep thinking maybe she needed more nutrition sooner, or the vaccine was off (but then goldie got the same one and nothing happened Louie)

Charm is fine. She didn't loook for the foal after and I pulled it round a little and she did lick at it but I thought she would start to get stressed if I left it so I made the decision to just remove him and Charm didn't care. Within half an hour she was up, ate a warm mash dinner and some hay. Just rested over night and today still very tired. I'll put her out tomorrow with thriller and see if I can get her dried up cause I don't think she will be suitable for a foster at the moment.

He was a bay just like meadow.

I have a photo of him if anyone wanted to see but I won't post it publicly.

Sorry end to my breeding year.

I really don't think its anything you've done or didn't do. By looking at pictures its hard to say exactly what was wrong... But you have done such a good job with your girls.
We understand though how you feel....most of us have lost foals and understand. We also understand the need to find a reason.. Just know that you have taken excellent care of your mares... Your blameless.
I am hoping that Charm continues to do ok. Glad she has done so well so far.

Hayley - I was so sad for you when I read this.  I totally understand how difficult it can be, yet it's never the same for any owner/breeder.

Thinking of you with cyber hugs, today.  Glad that Charm is doing well and hope she gets the rest that she needs.

so sorry, so sorry.  It is always so hard.  My riding mare had one beautiful foal.  He was great; walk on a tarp, jump jumps, graduate from parelli when he was 5 months.  He was very curious, with the gentlest personality and he died at 9 months.  It was a horrible death. They thought he had been poisoned, so they poured charcoal and oil down him, then it was a 3 day holiday.  I did not know he was not drinking, he would put his nose in the water , but could not drink.  (I have auto waters) I know better now how to check for dehydration.   By the time they got back his cbc he was already too far gone. They tried all medical things possible.  We were at the Special Hospital and he fought and fought.  They said he had 5% chance to make it and we were stupid.  We just told them to keep treating him--I guess we still believed in miracles and medicine.  He suffered.  I will never do that again.  We never did know what killed him.his kidneys failed, but looking back on it 10 years now, I think he ate a piece of plastic in the field and it perferated his gut, because that morning he was sick and would not eat, he had pooped out a little piece of plastic and he was was just dying a slow death- nothing could have saved him.  -----They asked me if I wanted just his heart cremated, his head, or the whole thing.  I was hysterical.  My husband paid for the whole thing and I still have him in a box. *********** U have to believe your baby did not suffer.  He just didn't wake up.  U did nothing wrong.  I had spent a fortune with my big horses with flu straws up their noses, shots, suppliments, and to lose him at 9 months was bad.  I can always get very emotional and cry about my little Ali Khan purebred Arabian colt.

Hayley please rest assured that the sad loss of Charm's baby was not your fault. Your care for and attention to Charm was, and is, first class. For some reason destiny sadly decided that this little fella was not to be.
I hope Charm is recovering ok. Sending you huge ((((HUGS)))).

Clara, so very sorry to read your story as well, it must have been terrible for you. x

Hayley, I too agree with Anna.  You can be sure nothing you did caused this little one's death.  As breeders we know sometimes things just don't go right, and we never quite know the reason.  But you are one of those who carefully watch and care for these mommas, and little ones, and it's just sad it wasn't to be.  Sending lots of {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to you.  Thank you for caring so much.

And Clara, that is such a sad story.  I'm sending {{{{{HUGS}}}}} for you, too.  Even after this time, you make sure you understand you were doing what you thought was best for him.  Don't second-guess yourself.  He was loved and knew he was loved.  All we can do is our best, and you did.

So, ladies, know you are loved here for the care and concern you have for your horses.  We all appreciate how much you do for good outcomes, but breeding is not for the faint-of-heart as most of us have learned over the years.  We can only do our best, and both of you did.  Sending lots of love your ways!
