Title: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on August 07, 2016, 08:23:33 PM
Precious, varnish appy mare, has had 1 foal,in foal to Legacy our Leopard Stallion, both around 32 inches tall.
Not sure when she is due so going to keep eye on her. ( Don't you love no breed dates!!)
She has the start of an udder but doesn't look very far along.

I feel like the udder thing is from being overweight. I sat with her this morning and waited and waited , never felt movement. I am going to order a wee foal 120. It wont give me an exact breeding date but at least i will know if shes bred!

I can't see the pictures great, but from what I can see she's not overweight enough to cause big udders really. I think most of the weight would be in front of the udder in a fatty pad not the actual udder. My guess is she is just an early blossomer lol

In person you can tell she is pretty chunky, her crest is to big and her ribs are hard to feel.... She is just like my Kate, a hoover loves to eat, and wonders why everyone else is running...LOL!

I must admit, were I to be a breeder, I'd be producing appys too. I've always loved them, since I first met real Nez Perce Appaloosas on the reservations downriver from us in Idaho. Even today, they cherish the breed they almost lost to annihilation by cavalry troops.

If I'm understanding your dates correctly, she's due late Jan-early Feb? I know you said earlier you had no breeding dates. I forget what part of the world you're in. Is that late winter for you? Brrrrr for the baby if it is! LOL And an even BIGGER brrrrrrrrr for you on foal watch!!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on October 31, 2016, 02:42:25 PM
I dont have an exact due date because I didnt breed her, she was bred at a friends place, they were put together 3/6/16, she remembers they bred soon after so that is the earliest date I have for her. She could have been covered a week or 2 later. Given how she is progressing I dont think its much later than that.
Yes Jan- Feb at earliest, I am in Texas so not cold like most have to deal with But down right freezing for us :P
I am prepared though, with foal blankets, heat lights ( if needed, the kind that hang so not dangerous for barn use) and lots of thick bedding. Got a make shift hallway on the barn so that will help this winter.
My welsh mare used to foal in Feb, so I am pretty good at dealing with early foalings, though I would much prefer March ? April foalings!!
This season I should also have a June and July foaling, which to me is worse because its just so darn hot here.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on November 06, 2016, 11:45:56 AM
Here in Florida I always bred for March/April/early May foals, too.  The heat in the summer was just so much!  Had a few early babies, and also used deep bedding a heat lamps when necessary.

Have you had good luck with the p-test? I bought 20 just to see how they worked and every single one turned the pregnant green blue color, even my 100% open mares.

Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on November 06, 2016, 08:54:01 PM
I've not had any problems using the p tests, and this season of testings on the mares have been 100% accurate, so far anyway.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Suebe on November 06, 2016, 09:38:03 PM
It was that P-test it's called. Mainly used on cattle I believe but everyone was trying it on minis here. There's a photo of the test at the beginning thread and I wondered iif you all decided yay or nay on the test. Didn't work out for me...
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on November 06, 2016, 09:53:05 PM
That's what I was thinking it was, since I remembered that people were going to try a new test.  So, we have one that is a vote for "no" if it was testing open mares as pregnant.  And one vote for a yes.

Anyone else try it?  What results did someone else get?
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on November 07, 2016, 06:17:58 AM
Yes it's the p test. So far a friend and I have gotten high % of accuracy, with one false neg( tested early) and 1 false positive. All my tests this season have been 100% accurate( to date)

Thank you. She is 280 days today and udder is still up a bit in the mornings. She has started sleeping a lot more at night, moving a lot slower and starting to look miserable. Thankfully just as sweet as always.
I am really looking forward to seeing this little foal!

This morning Precious has made some changes. Her udder was fuller. However what surprised me is that her tail head area is noticeably softer and sunk in. Her vulva is more relaxed too.
I am keeping her on camera at night as I've noticed her demeanor has changed.
She is almost 285 days. I could be wrong as I've not foaled her out before, but her body seems closer to foaling than what her udder is clueing me in on...

Remember, they can be a bit tricky, and just when you think they've slowed down -- they really just planned to have you give up and leave so they can drop that baby!!

Keep us posted, and pictures are appreciated!

Diane, your right! She sure could at any time!
And I am going by the date they were first put together, as I dont have breeding date from previous owner. That date was March 3 2016.  So she could be 187 days today.
Took new pics this evening, baby low but she is still lopsided and wide.Udder barely there.
I dont even know if  she bred right away or a month later. So I am just watching.

What are yalls thoughts? First 2 pics today, last pic a week ago.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on December 15, 2016, 06:43:28 PM
Thank goodness she's still wide, I would be more nervous if baby had lined up.  But she definitely has a "V" started and her tummy looks like it's moving forward of center.  So, I'm wondering.  Do you know her history about carry dates?

Was she with the stallion at the other farm?  Udders don't really mean much to me, since they can fill an udder at foaling, but they are nice to look at if they start one.  LOL

Any personality changes?

I'd be watching for her pushing her butt against things, rolling as a hint she's trying to line up baby, etc.  If she was with the stallion at the other farm, she may be further along than you think.  She's definitely worth watching closely.

What do you think, Anna?
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Ryan on December 15, 2016, 08:47:20 PM
Agree , i still think she looks lopsided but you know her better than we all do, so Id agree to keep a close eye on her.

Gee she has such a sweet face , I can understand why she is named "Precious"  :)
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on December 15, 2016, 09:01:58 PM
All I know was that she was put with the stallion at the other farm on March 3rd, so that is the earliest she could have bred.
Yes she has had some personality changes, she is laying down more at night, and has started standing in a new part of her stall with Bum against the wall. Sometimes she will stand with head in corner. She isnt able to eat quite as much hay as she was before during the nighttime. She has done some rolling in her stall as the evidence is on her fur in the morning :)
I only know she has had 2 foals before. Both fillies. Both appaloosa. I have no idea how long her previous pregnancies went.
Her vulva doesnt seem ready, but her tail head area is relaxing.  I do check her udder am & pm but its not much to look at.
I do have her on camera at night now :)
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Anna on December 16, 2016, 05:56:27 AM
She's a bit difficult to read isn't she?  Her body shape and mood would say that she's ahead of her earliest possible foaling dates, but her udder in that last picture looks quite normal for a mare with two previous foalings. Maybe the foal is lying a bit awkwardly and therefore making her feel a bit miz at the moment.  But as we are soon to be at the end of December and she could foal around the end of january to her early March dates (Feb being a short month), showing a little movement in her udder from now on could be correct (if she was following the 'book'!!).  I dont think you can do more than give her the freedom to exercise and roll if necessary and to keep an eye on her Holly.  Will be watching this space with great interest!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

Thanks Anna!!!

Okay, we'll just watch with you.  And lopsided is good. So we wait!  Sometimes these mares are so confusing.  We've got a ways to go by dates, so just keep us posted!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on December 16, 2016, 08:31:40 AM
Thanks yall...!
I keep feeling like she is closer than her body is telling me, but that could be because everything but her udder is gearing up.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on December 16, 2016, 07:31:51 PM
That's why to me growing an udder is a nicety, but not a requisite.  Some just fill at foaling, which makes the wait very confusing! LOL

yes it does. Her udder was puffier this morning. She doesnt seem to look any different otherwise.

Holly and everyone how do you handle the cold with a new baby? Ours is also coming during the cold, anywhere from 32-40 (F)degrees. I feel like the second it's out I want to jump in the stall towel it off and throw the blanket on but I also understand the importance of mom and baby bonding for a bit, they always lick their babies which starts that of course. What do you plan on doing and do you have any advice? I'd love to hear from anyone this is my first cold weather babe

I ALWAYS jump right in, help dry off foal, i stay in stall for hours, not interfering, but helping as needed. None of my mares have ever been bothered by this , and none have never not bonded with their foal.
I have a blanket ready for Precious foal and my stack of foaling towels.
I also provide deep bedding, draft free area to foal in.  Course the barn camera, and milk testing , so far ive never missed a foaling. ( And pray I never do!!)

Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on December 21, 2016, 03:49:10 PM
so for the past few days Precious has had a tiny udder started, but I am noticing it is starting to stay up during the day instead of going back to flaps. I hope this means she will start really building an udder.
I think but cant really tell if her belly is moving forward of center.

On a side note to Suebe in the first udder pic you can see she has some crusty stuff on the ends of her teat, thats just normal sloughing ( or so I call it) And may be able to help you see the difference in what is going on with your momma to be!

Looks like she's "centered" so watch her closely as baby will start moving forward of center.  At that point, a picture from the back will help to show that baby is lined up properly!  She is looking great !

This mornings pictures. Body shape still looks closer than udder or vulva.
I felt foal kick in the tail head area, very exciting.
Hope udder fills before she foals, so I have milk testing to help me determine foaling!

Praying for a safe and uneventful delivery, and can't wait to see this little one!

Well spent the day helping my folks clean up their yard. Put ponies up for the night, precious udder was back down to flaps.
She is confusing me with her belly shape looking like foal may be positioning. But udder and vulva doing nothing. I know that can't happen quickly, but it never has to my mares so I am feeling torn, wondering if I should be watching her close or not.
Diane, does her belly look forward of center to you? I am going to take more pics and post next barn check.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Rocklone on December 26, 2016, 09:43:29 PM
It looks VERY forward of center to me and remember charm was a wrinkly vulva, barely bagged up and not even forward of center and she foaled!

This is happening! This is not a drill! :p

She had liquid for a few weeks before but it creamed up about two nights before but I was still very yellow and thin. She never had a big bag before or after but clearly didn't cause an issue. The biggest bag she had ever was the day after weaning!

Omg boob juice!! That's so funny!!!
I can't get a drop of milk, and feel like her udder should be much fuller.
The inside of he vulva is almost the Scarlet color, but vulva isn't near relaxed, IMHO, lol she needs to get with he foaling program!

Baby looks forward of center, but not quite lined up yet, as she is still looking pretty wide.  I think some rolling will be in order, which she can do pretty quickly.

Keep us posted for sure!

It was pretty warm today so I bathed precious, she has been sweaty and sticky. Now she is nice and clean. Figured better get it done before the cold returned. Udder was a bit bigger this am, back down after exercise. Still wide. Keep on waiting, I would like to see her hang on a few more weeks.

With the up and down you may have some time. Just take note when the "down" doesn't happen. You should be almost ready at that point.

Post by: Holly on December 28, 2016, 10:03:28 AM
Well last nights down udder is still down this morning!
Gotta LOVE the mare code!
Which honestly is fine with me because she is at the earliest day 300 she could be, so heres for waiting a few more weeks!

I just peeped in on your webcam Holly. She doesn't look as wide today from the camera angle you have. Looked comfortable 10 minutes ago though. Here's a toast  for a healthy safely arrived foal. (That I am 100% sure will be foaled no earlier than 1 January 2017. LOL)

Sounds promising, GO PRECIOUS!

I think she will hang on another few weeks at least.

Well I know as soon as I say shes going backwards, udder is much smaller, vulva tight and  belly wide, she will progress forward again. So Ive said it and its true, so lets hope she gets back on the ball soon!!

Yes, baby is quite wide!  Take a nap!  Don't you just love it (not!) when they go back and forth!

Looks like it won't be long -- but time is relative....LOL  But in the overall scheme of things, maybe only a couple of weeks or so.  She's still got plenty of time, and it takes time to cook SPOTS!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 03, 2017, 12:52:39 PM
This is true! And with not having an actual last cover date I really dont know exactly how many days she is. I am going by the first day they were put together, and for all I know I could be a month off :)
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 04, 2017, 09:35:16 AM
Precious had an off night last night, she was very uncomfortable and wanted to lie down a lot. She constantly changed positions. She settled down around midnight so I checked and went to bed.
Got up this morning and was happy to see she went shopping from 12-5 am 😂
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on January 04, 2017, 06:08:51 PM
Poor little momma!  I see maid service is being done on her stall, and she is standing quietly!  LOL

Good shopping, but looks like she needs another run or two at the grocery, but you just never know!

We'll be watching!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 04, 2017, 06:34:15 PM
Yes I feel more confident now that she will develop a testable udder before foaling. I hope! Her tail head is really relaxing more. But baby still wide.  Vulva doesn't look ready but I am very happy to see changes! Udder a bit fuller last check than this morning.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Silver City Heritage Farm on January 04, 2017, 06:50:58 PM
I just checked your cam, and saw there were 3 other "peepers" too! LOL

Good to see she's done some shopping. From the camera angle, look from her rump forward, she certainly has made some changes. Her hips seem to be falling off, and her whole body aura (for lack of a better word) seems to be uncomfortable and ready to foal quicker than I'd thought. At this rate, she may pass Pandora!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

I don't know how Pandora is hanging on, I am anxious for an update!

Precious, we haven't forgotten you! We still check in on the cam, wait for updates with bated breath, and breathe a sigh of relief when we know that all is well.

So, unless Paula at LP Painted Ponys has someone about to drop a foal on the sly we focus on you.

Okay Precious, you're up!!

Cook lots of SPOTS for us, and take whatever time you need, but you KNOW we're anxious to see your new little one, so sooner is good for us!!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 07, 2017, 10:48:16 AM
I haven't been to barn yet, it's FREEZING outside!! Lol! But as of last night she was holding steady with that same small udder. The cold weather with rain had them in the barn for 2 days, so today they get freedom.  But below freezing temps again tonight so everyone will be in early.
Bear and Daisy loved the temperature btw!! Daisy even drug her rug out into the middle of the front yard so she could guard in style! Silly dogs!

OOOHHH NOOOOO HOLLY!! Musn't say THAA-aaaaat!! Then she'll wait 'til, I don't know, late February??  I'm with Diane, hold on a few more days to prepare some really nice spotty spots, then give us an uneventful delivery of an eventful foal.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

Course her udder was down quite a bit after being out all day.  I am OK with that, I would be stressed if it was when it's this cold!!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Silver City Heritage Farm on January 08, 2017, 10:00:21 AM
I see a couple of others were peeking in on her now. She's still wide though, so guess she'll hang on a bit more to paint on some extra spots.

I forget Holly, how long have you had an appaloosa focused breeding program?
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 08, 2017, 02:48:16 PM
This is my first attempt at mini Appaloosas. Do I am excited to see what we get!
Just an update on Precious. Her udder area is shaved so I wonder if that is what's making her shape look off.
She is doing great same little udder, still huge wide and low. Still jello but, vulva tight.
Let's hope she cooking spots!!

Yes I own the sire, he is my little leopard appy.
Precious udder was up this morning, it's a little bit bigger but felt meatier than it's been. The picture doesn't look much different but the size by feel does!
She is also shedding like crazy, where none of the others are. I always noticed that on Kate as foaling got closer.Kate always foaled in jan/Feb too.

Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Ryan on January 10, 2017, 04:52:02 PM
One of our biggies used to shed as she was getting closer to foal. It was a good indication to us that she was getting close as she didnt usually get much of an udder until she foaled.

Gotta take any indications or hints that these sneaky mares give us :)

Udder about the same today. Still shedding like crazy. Started having softer poo last night.
her tail head seems more relaxed but honestly it could be because she is shedding so much. Vulva isnt light pink anymore. Nothing at all to test from udder.

Yes agreed , Plenty of spots coming :)

It could just be my computer but looking at the last two udder shots , I think there is a little more filling in the last shot ....
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 11, 2017, 06:23:08 PM
i think maybe just a bit, and it doesnt go down much by evening.
I am struggling a bit with her for a few reasons. One is that I just havent foaled her out before so dont know what she will do. Another is that some things about her seem closer than others. ( ive always felt like once all signs meet we will see a foal, but I know from others that isnt always true) I am so used to the size of big horse udders that when I feel her udder for changes it seems so tiny to me. Though when I look at it I dont see a foaling udder , but I know that an udder that looks like that can fill pretty quickly, or drag on quite a while.
I am a bit worried that I am going to miss this foaling because I wont have all the signs I need. I am not even sure why I feel that way.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Ryan on January 11, 2017, 06:46:58 PM
Try not to worry too much Holly. After reading and following your threads over the last few years, you set a wonderful example to other owners expecting foals. Your always prepared, you keep us updated on changes, ask for opinions and you do all possible to ensure your little ones arrive safely into the world.

Ive seen many threads where some expecting owners could really take a leaf out of your book.

Fingers crossed that all goes well for you both ;pray. It will be interesting to look back on this thread next year if you put in her foal to see if her signs are the same.

Ryan  :)

She's getting closer!  I can't really tell - having a problem with the pics (my computer is opening them huge and then blurry) - have to pan back and forth/up & down to see what I'm looking for).

Seems to me she's about the same size both KoKo and Kechi were last year (both maidens) before foaling.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

Definite growth, and looking quite wide.  We'll have to start watching for some rolling to get this little one lined up!  All in all, she's looking great, and enjoying her hay, right now!

So her stall was open all day and she chose to stay inside. This is new behavior. Also her udder is shiney but doesn't look like a foaling udder. Vulva doesn't look ready.  Her tail has very little resistance.
I found a new collage Maker on my phone so I am able to post a before and now pic together! Love it!!

Udder is fuller in the back and starting to develop a bit in front of teats. Body much slimmer and tail head really dropping off.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on January 16, 2017, 05:28:38 PM
Well, she's still got a ways to go to be "slimmer", but it's all relative, I know.  Is she doing a bit of rolling to get baby positioned?

Went to check her since I just got home, and the cam is offline, so I'm thinking she's outside!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Silver City Heritage Farm on January 16, 2017, 07:09:01 PM
She's interesting to watch for sure! I see she's much "pinker" in the udder comparison shot. Does this have any significance in the appys with their mottled skin? Or is it just the camera exposure?

I agree she's fallen off quite a bit around tailhead. It's even easy to see on the camera. Which, by the way, I very much appreciate you sharing with us.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: Holly on January 16, 2017, 07:21:24 PM
She has been rolling, every morning she covered in bedding.  I keep waiting for her to go slab sided.
Yes it's def got the pink tinge going on, I notice that even on dark udders, as the udder starts to fill.
So far not a drop to test.
She was happy to go out today, the weather was nice and warm.  Her udder stayed about the same, even with turn out.
I am anxious to see how she will change as she gets closer to Foaling.  I am still being paranoid she's going to sneak it past me.  I don't know why I am so worried but perhaps it's because it seems to happen more often with minis and I worry much more about things going wrong.  Once I know how she usually does things I will feel better.
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on January 16, 2017, 07:31:26 PM
The rolling is a good sign, and in this case, I think you'll see quite a change as she lines up this little one.  But, we all know they can do a few good rolls and get that little one lined up in minutes, so keep a close eye, and I can't wait!!!

Last night her udder went down a lot., Lol. This morning it's back up bigger. Still nothing to test. Crazy mare, she still seems quite content, gets shifty fee when resting. She has the best little attitude with all this picture taking, and feeling up.  She sure is a sweet little mare.

I was just working on something with pedigrees, and found that Precious and Legacy had a foal in March 2008, that was a Bay Appaloosa with a mixed color mane and tail and a small star!  I haven't been able to find a picture of her, of course that was 8 years ago, and I'm sure the Clark's sold her, but she's still registered in their names.

The foal is only registered in the AMHR, not in AMHA.

Can't wait to see THIS little one!  Even more excited now!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

They also had a filly a cpl of years ago that was never registered. Also had spots!
Ok so I am going to add another picture... Sense last check her udder has grown significantly, it's so big the legs press it together.  Still nothing to test!!

Looking forward to new pics of your foal Suebe!!

OK 5:30 am check we have a full flat seamless back. No milk to test. Vulva looking a bit more relaxed. She still changing its just slow. Waiting for the boom when milk comes in. If it does before foaling!

I see you changed your cam announcement to "getting very close to foaling" Holly. Since I still see horse apples in the stall, and she's munching her hay in a rather irritated way....guess I'll head off to work and check in to more of the same this afternoon.

By the way, how's the weather down there? What's in the forecast for the next few days?

Day 323~ all thats left is the finishing touches on udder and vulva. Weve had 4 days of rain, so the ponies have been in, today they finally get to go back out. We still have a lot of standing water, but by tomorrow it will have run off.  I hope she does some good rolling today to line baby up. And I am sure the exercise and sunshine will do her good.

We're all checking in very excitedly and Precious is just standing quietly by her stall door!  Probably wishing she could go out once the water passes!

She's looking great, and we can't wait to read and see the "announcement" !!

Poor little sweetie has turned into a crabby pants. Threats to kick me when I feel udder. Turns head to tell me no. Good sign though!
Very wide and V'ed.

Yes, it's unfortunate that the personality change is more to the negative, but a wonderful sign that things are almost there!  She'll roll that baby quickly, and when she does....LOOK OUT!!  We'll all be watching and waiting, and praying for a safe and uneventful delivery of a healthy SPOTTED little one!! :)

She seems better today. Had a nice sunny but very windy day. She got to spend time outside. Her udder was down a bit this morning but is up even after being out all day.  Still no milk. Vulva seems a bit more relaxed, red but not foaling red. She's done quite a bit of butt rubbing. No rolling today, she reserves that for inside her stall lol. I will be checking at 8 tonight. Hope to see more changes!

Good morning, other Precious Peepers!! LOL

We have to make an unplanned trip this morning, so I thought I'd check in. All I saw was 3 other folk looking, intermittent tail lifting and grumpy faces at the neighbor in the stall next door.

Of course I'll check back when I get back, but I'll be surprised if there's much change. Sorry Holly! I know you'd like some s-l-e-e-p.......

Lol!!!
Yes I definitely drink coffee! A few years ago we would drink a coffee called death wish, it's super strong, a great foal watch coffee lol. Tasted like old fashioned perked coffee, which is IMHO fantastic!!
Precious spent the day out grazing. Udder shrank down to 1/2 the size. Maybe, that's a good thing, and would explain why she doesn't have milk yet. Gives me hope that when she's ready she will. Her vulva is relaxing getting deeper red and getting stretchy.
I laughed at her today, she was out front waddling all around the yard, looking for the perfect grass, all the other ponies went to the back yard. By the time she made it back there they all headed back tuo the front. Poor little caboose that can't keep up.
Anyway tonight's udder after being out all day. Center crease is still bulging a bit.

Just as well as I think you would be struggling without coffee at the moment.  Death wish sounds like the perfect coffee for foal watchers :)

That would have been great to have seen , poor girl waddling around  , she sounds like such a sweet mare :)

You can also watch on cam and I hope y'all get to catch her foal. I try to update often in case she s making a dash to the finish line! Seems earlier ( top pic) not much change, then at 10:0 check( bottom pic) less crease. Maybe midnight check will reveal more changes.

Very easy to get milk to test now. pH 8.4, calcium was 200 last night 400 this morning! I feel a great relief now that I can test.lol
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread
Post by: dcwolcott on January 28, 2017, 01:47:19 PM
Fabulous!!  That is great news!  Now remember, her values can change nicely, or dramatically.  We've had mares go from the high 7's in pH to foaling in one day, or others nicely go day by day slowing dropping.

I will be waiting excitedly for the next report!!

This kind of news is quite a tease, when the cam is down!  Hopefully, Precious is outside doing some fabulous rolling of that little one into position!!
Title: Re: Precious foaling thread

Back eating her hay, standing in the exact same place as the last time I checked and the cam was on!

Ok Precious.  You're very "Precious" but that little one is just as precious to us!  So what about it?  Soon please....unless you're using the extra time to add more SPOTS!!!!

Think..... (http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=OIP.EigKxP6nMUPWmx7sU-xDeQEnDb&w=266&h=188&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0) or even a fewspot would be great!!

I cannot tell a lie Holly......I don't stay on your page when Precious is just standing around. I'm unfaithful.  :-\ I scroll through other streams.  >:D

HOWEVER, I don't think I'm the only one!  ;D ;D ;D Just came off Sasquatch Watch (where I only saw deer feeding in a snow storm) to check in here. Seems Precious is going to follow the book. Very, very slowly.

You'll have to upgrade your toothpick eye proppers to skewers. Make coffee today, leave it sit on low for drinking tomorrow. Change out of the blue jeans your usually dressed in during checks into yoga pants. That way, every little prickly thing will be poking your forneverness and help in keeping you awake. Get a copy of your most despised song, and play it on repeat....repeat.....repeat.....repeat...repeat....repeat....repeat...(is it working yet?!)

Then, after 11 and 1/2 hours of all of the above, run in the house to piddle. Glance at live feed, see everything is the same. Run to bathroom. Pause to wash hands, get distracted cleaning dirt from under fingernails, spend 5 minutes concentrating on clean hands. Return to barn without glancing at cam and find Precious nonchalantly licking foal dry.  :P :P

I missed the birth, 'cause we had to go do laundry. Left at 6:45 and got back at 8:55 to see a lovely baby wobbling around with a proud human family looking on.

Again, congratulations. I'll also say a prayer that Precious gets over her pains quickly.

Had a very easy delivery! But soon after Precious started to have sever pains, Colt wouldnt latch on, I think he was so busy learning to use his legs! Precious was having a difficult time  so we had to get meds on board, Baby finally latched on, after milking her out and syringe feeding. It was a rough couple of hours  but thank the Lord everything worked out!
Sue thank you for calling, I really appreciate it . I really do because had I been unaware, the phone call could have saved a life! I am sorry I didnt get a chance to talk longer but I was running very low on sleep and I was very concerned about them both!
So Colt is Black, and also looks to be a snowcap. Also I can see where he will grow more white and it looks like he has spots too!
I am so pleased! His front legs are a bit knock kneed, but i think in time with more exercise and unfolding he will straighten out.
He is super personable too!

BTW his name is
Siana's A Patch E Shadow

So am I correct in calling him a snowcap with spots? He has striped hooves and one solid white one. He has a cpl of black spots in his white, but much of the skin under the white is pink. I can see where the white looks like it will spread too....

I would say he is a snowcap, since they are usually born with that perfect shock of white on their butts.  I wouldn't call him a snowcap with spots, as I think the white will expand a bit over his rump, so better to call him a snowcap at this point.  Most appy breeders want either a snowcap or a fewspot, since both are homozygous for the appy genes and throw appy on any foals they produce.  They do have tests for the LP gene and the PATN gene, and you might want to test him for them to prove what he's carrying.  Nothing better than LP/LP PATN/PATN.  These are the ones you can breed to solid mares and produce some loud color babies.

He's just a little beauty!!  Precious and Legacy did you proud!!

Momma and baby resting quietly....

I popped in for a quick check around midnight, and again just now. I'm a bit surprised that she's still so crabby about letting him nurse. She walks away, nips, and this last time even kicked out. She's tried hiding in the corner as well.

He's quite the insistent little scamp, so got his sippies in (sneaking one in from under the tail!) If he weren't so strong it would be concerning. But she nips his leg and he keeps sipping. I suppose he's getting enough as he sips until HE decides to quit. Just wanted Holly to be aware.

And I agree with everyone else... he's unfolding into quite a handsome fellow!!

Ive been keeping a close eye on his output, and he is doing just great. I have watched her and realize she doesnt like him nursing when she is eating, Most times she lets him just fine.
Today he got his first day out, put them in the chain lik garden so he could stretch and play as well as still be safe.
Lots of cute pictures coming, I will put them in The Follow our foals  section!
