Can't believe how easy and smooth everything went. Plus my old appy mare was a good Momma but Sugar is such a great Momma! I did nothing pretty well just stood and watched. she had her out in minutes and had that baby up and walking withing 15 minutes nursing within 30! My appy foals always took hours to figure that out! Sugar kept nudging her and pushing her to her udder.

A little dark in the stall, but my first thoughts are you have a cute little buckskin filly, might be bay.
Sounds like she had a textbook delivery, something we don't often see, since they don't read the book and like to throw it in our face and say ha ha ha while she wait and wait and wait for them to do something.

Yeah i was super happy with no complications. My phone is so old and my camera on it sucks so I will get my big Dancy camera out later to get real pictures :)

Even with good cameras, sometimes stall pictures just don't turn out due to lighting and close quarters.

Ok, I looked at your other thread to see outside pictures of Sugar, she looks to be a really dark bay or seal brown.   do you know what color the stallion is?   I'm trying to figure if filly is buckskin or bay, I know I could just be patient and wait for more pictures, but it's more fun this way.

The stallion is a palimino tabiano. I am awful with horse colours haha most brown ones just look brown to me I'm bad at telling apart the bays/ seal browns etc. I think her yearling that I have from last year is a bay. I'll take pictures of her in a bit. Now sugars old owner said she had her genetics done and she's apparently the darkest version of buckskin. If she's telling the truth and she actually did that I don't know haja she looks brown to me haha

A couple pictures she does look to be a sooty buckskin, it's entirely possible; just don't see that dark terribly often (or at least I haven't).

I didn't even know dark buckskin were a thing until she said that and I researched. I was never into the genetics stuff but now I'm super interested in it all! I just never knew anything about it before.  This picture is baby syrups half sister, she was born a few weeks ago. The stallion looks just like this little fillys mare (I got permission from the owner to post this!)

Chanda, in looking at this little filly, I'm wondering if she isn't a double dilute, in which case he would throw that cream gene every time.  What do you think?

But I do think this baby is a buckskin, and it's certainly reasonable that mom is a sooty buckskin.  Remember that picture of Tide Creek Augustus, the Welsh Pony stallion who is such a dark "sooty" buckskin, he is often mistaken for a black horse.

I'm not sure.  Palominos are often born with pinkish skin that darkens with age, as do baby blue eyes turn to brown.   This one looks suspiciously like smokey cream, but if mare is palomino and stallion is palomino, that's not possible; but if stallion is smokey cream, then it is possible.   So many possibilities.
Title: Re: A beautiful filly for Sugar!!
Post by: dcwolcott on June 27, 2016, 06:14:12 PM
That's what I was thinking, that the stallion is not palomino, but smokey cream.  I wonder if we could get a picture of the stallion posted?  I was looking at her eyes and the skin around her eyes, and her muzzle skin, thinking this was not just palomino skin.

The mare is palomino for sure, but this baby looks more like a smokey cream, than palomino.  Too much dilute color going on, I think in that skin.  Oh well, time will tell, but perhaps we could get a picture of the sire -- in natural coat and color -- I don't know if they show him, but so often they darken areas when showing, so hoping we could get an "natural" picture of him.

With minis, color genetics can make your head spin, cause if a color exists in horses it seems minis can have (very few exceptions), and they can have them all at the same time, even.

Ok so I found the picture I snapped of him from like 100 feet away in February so he's got his thick coat. In the picture you can't even tell he has pinto or tabiano (I don't know what is the proper term) but in real life you can. His owner just messaged that she'd take a new summer picture. I'm not sure if she shows him. She does show her mares though. Sorry that it's an awful picture haha as soon as she send the new one I'll post it :)

I do see what you guys are saying with the pink muzzle and eyes on that filly, I never noticed that before when I looked at it.

Post by: dcwolcott on June 27, 2016, 08:17:13 PM
No, you can see his pinto patterning.

But with those dark lips and eyes, I guess I'll revert to a palomino, since there is no dilution in his eye color or muzzle color.

She also told me that i should be charging her to come and take a look because she's too cute and tiny haha there's actually not too many minis put this way. I had to drive 5 hours just to find any all when I bought sugar.

My equine vet, who has come and gone (moved away after 2 years more than a decade ago) used to love to come to the farm and check things out.  She was the most dependable vet I ever had.  But the minis fascinated her -- as she had Warmbloods and Haflingers, and was a Grant Prix rider.  But the little ones, she tried everything out on.  She loved learning to do the ultrasounds on the girls -- so I got free ultrasounds for 2 years after she got the mini instruments!  I loved it.

I was very sad when she moved away.  Never had a vet like her....EVER!

Glad your little girl got the all clear from the vet :)

Yeah this is the first time I've met this one and after 5 minutes I knew she was going to be awesome!  The vet all horse owners used around here had to close down when the race track in windsor closed so i know how that feels. He was a really great vet and nice person! If i email and ask him things he will still answer every question and gice his advice :) This new vet comes from out of town they have a office with 3 always on call so I liked that and she was just so nice!

Yes, I'm not very good at predicting which will stay blue and which won't.  Hopefully someone here has experience with blue eyes.  I only had 1 foal born here with blue eyes and I swore they would stay blue....but they didn't.

But whatever, she's just beautiful, and it's easy to see why your taken with her.

Spotty has already changed colors.  Not sure how much the appy will affect his coloring, but he's already darkened quite a bit since birth.  It'll be interesting to see his colors in the spring.

Hey guys! so Syrups legs and face are shedding out and her new colour is so different, I don't know what this colour would be considered ( a guess any way since genetically I know could be something else ) The picture doesn't really do justice. I will get new ones tomorrow and face ones. In real life it's like a light milk chocolate mixed with dark cream haha

Really hard to tell anything from that picture, but I do know their first foal shed is often their darkest shed, and their color will change a bit for their first couple years before their adult color sets.

How is Syrup?? I figure weaning time has come and gone, and she must be growing into a sweet yearling. Please check in and let us know how she...and you and your family...is doing.

Im curious to know as well.

Our buckskin tobiano filly is extremely light in coloring and has very little dark on her legs due to white markings.  It's always fun to see what other babies look like at the different stages of coloring...

Oh my gosh! My life has been a crazy mess the last few months! I am so so sorry for not being on here ! Happy new year to all of you! So far her colour is looking the same ? I'm not great with colouring! She did although have an accident this last weekend. Her right eyelid was ripped almost off, neither us or the vet can figure out what happened but got her all stitched up and you can barely tell! Also I have sugar a stud booked for the end of April:) I missed having a pregnant mare this year! Had way enough going on with pregnant goats though, but that's another story! Hope everyone is doing well!!

I will definitely load some on tonight ! And get caught up on everything on here ! Yeah my nephew who was down visiting from Toronto, came in and said " I'm not sure if it's normal but your one horses eyelid looks like it's having off" if he hadn't told me (this was around 10 am) normally I don't do a good check until I bring them in at 5. The vet said it looked super fresh and was easier to stick because of that:) thank goodness!

Syrup looks great!  Good family "catch" on the injured eyelid, no problem w/ stitching.  They heal fast if caught early like that.

and pretty sure she's a buckskin.
