Title: Silver???
Post by: Holly on October 08, 2018, 08:05:14 PM
Diane, does Ushers Storm Duster have the silver gene in his pedigree?
There is a foal from a black mare, Storm is the alleged sire, foal appears to be silver.
Just wondering if I need to test him for silver.

I would think, if he carried silver his mane would be diluted and he wouldnt have black in it from the black spots, and that his black body spots would also be diluted?

Do you have pictures of the mare and Storm?
Appy color shift can do interesting things, and while usually it seems to lighten dark colors, I wouldn't be surprised if it could darken them.

Certainly a lot of black based horses in his line, but in the sire's line, you'll note many sorrels with what is either "flaxen" manes and tails, or "mixed" manes and tails, and when I see "flaxen" on solid sorrels I think it may be worth checking for silver. Certainly can't hurt.

Diane and Chanda thasnks so much for quick reply and Diane for the pedigree!

Ok I thought silver didnt show on chestnut?? But thinking it can hide on chestnut it could be passed down.
I also question whether Storm was the only stallion on the property ....

Here are the pictures of the foal in question, I also wonder if cream could be at play , and mom could possibly be smokey black. I am going to find out dams name.

Hi Holly! *Wave, wave*

As you might now, I'm a friend of Paula's at LP Painted Ponys.  She breeds for silver, so I've seen quite a wide variety of them the last 5+ years.

Yes, that foal is silver. Yes, silver hides on Chestnut/sorrel as Diane explained. Yes, as Chanda said, appy patterning seems to modify the way other colors are expressed.

Here's a link to Paula's website if you'd like to see the wide variety of ways silver shows. Plus...you can see her REALLY NICE this year's foal crop. 😉😉😍😍

This baby sure looks silver.
cream usually mixes oddly with silver, so I'll go with just straight silver black.

So now the question  is, is Storm silver or is Storm not the foals sire.  I guess testing is in order.

ok so the foal in the second picture is not the same foal as the one in question, but that foal also looks silver.
Not sure of the sire of that foal.  Came from same place , so possibly Storms.
