Feeding hay cubes and other forages that stretch hay...

(1/1)

Chanda:
Tell me your experience with feeding other forages to stretch limited hay.

We are in a drought, hay production is down, we'll be lucky to get 1/3-1/2 (1/2 is probably exaggerating what there will be), and hay prices have gone crazy.    Last year, I paid $125/ton; highest I've ever paid is $175 or $180/ton; this year they are talking over $300/ton and that's before delivery costs in many cases.   I've been in contact with several that say they have hay, but only two have given me decent answers; one doesn't offer delivery and just too far away, the other offers delivery but expensive.  The rest just haven't replied or given me a definitive answer, not even to say "we are sold out" or "you're one millionth in line".

I know what kinds of feed items can be used to stretch or replace hay, but I've not had to do it, so tell me your experience with.  What did you feed?  How much did you feed?   How did it go?
Thanks.
