Very excited she's 265 days today! :) she's on 10 cc of regumate a day only as a precaution. She lost a baby last year at 117 days due to what appeared to be an umbilical cord defect. She was flushed, then had 4 days of uterine infused antibiotics, put on hormones and rebred. She's had one beautiful healthy foal about 5 years ago before we purchased her. She's only had two owners so we know her entire history. She is our first full size horse baby born on our property, have had minis :) do you think she's bagging too soon? I text my vet not with photos just telling her she's started and she's not concerned, what do you all think?
-
It seems a little early, but yet some can take up to 6 weeks to fill, which certainly would put it in the ball park as far as timing. She's still nicely lopsided and baby hasn't dropped -- both are good news. So, we'll just be waiting and watching with you, and hope she takes her time bringing this little one to ground. ;pray ;pray
-
Are you positive on her breed dates? Any way she could be further along?
If not I would watch her closely as premature udder development can indicate placentitis. In order to detect placentitis an ultrasound can be done to check for inflammation in the placenta and if nessasary antibiotics, anti inflammatory meds too.
There are other causes for early udder development, but could also be completely normal. I would watch her close and if she continues to develop contact vet again.
Other than that she looks amazingly beautiful!!
-
Thank you and yes I'm positive of the dates. We hand bred her Feb 11-15 and I'm of course counting from the last breeding date. Wouldn't pllacentitis be highly unlikely as she was flushed prior to breeding and had 4 days of an antibiotic syringes straight into her uterus. Sparkly clean start :)
-
Thank you Diane for the words of wisdom! Aporeciate! What do you think? Wouldn't placentitis be unlikely under the circumstances???
-
My vet said she'll most likely bag up and back down over the next 2 months several times before finally getting there?! Anyone have this experience this early on??? Should I panic and have an ultrasound or just keep an eye, nothing to worry about yet?!
-
One of the other things that can cause early udder development is fescue grass? Do you know if you have fescue in the pasture? If so, you should remove her immediately, as fescue is okay during early pregnancy, but is unsafe in the last trimester. If you're not sure about the fescue, I would switch her to alfalfa during these last few months.
Placentitis would seem unlikely if she got a clean bill of health for breeding, but I'm happy to know your in contact with the vet. Certainly wouldn't hurt to ask her opinion about placentitis.
Meanwhile, we'll keep praying she holds this little one for a couple of months! ;pray ;pray
She is absolutely GORGEOUS by the way!!
-
Thank you so much! I've kept her the entire pregnancy so far in a pasture attached to one of our barn stalls where nothing is growing, it's totally boring dirt lol but I didn't want her grazing or eating random plants. Yes I tend to be a bit over protecting and worry for no apparent reason sometimes ;) haha
-
Actually fescue is more likely to cause a thickened placenta, and lack of an udder.
One would think a clean start would rule out placentitis for sure, however, if she was cover live after antibiotics there is still a risk.
-
Sorry if my reply sounds cold, I just woke up and am still on coffee cup 1😃
-
Hahahaha Holly! Me before coffee as well ;) so I text my vet early this mourning just to be safe...here's what she said...she's such a wonderful vet, she's been nothing but amazing! But I'll just keep a watchful eye of course
-
Id not be worried at all either. My yard had a mare i was watching and she had a bag for ages. They went on holiday, cause they KNEW her dates, and i was like noooooo shes bagged up!!!! but sure enough she didn't foal for a good month after lol
-
Thank you Rocklone for sharing that :) I was also thinking that our BLM burrow we adopted was bagged up for about 3 months before she foaled but she's a donkey not sure how they measure up
-
I wouldnt stress out over it for sure, just continue to watch and IF she starts bagging quickly, contact your vet.
I always like to air on the side of caution, and I have had a placentitis mare, who started bagging , though slightly at 145 days! We started treatment early and were able to maintain pregnancy.
There is no way to determine or rule out placentitis without an US. But as long as she isnt progressing quickly just keep an eye on things :)
So can we see a picture of baby daddy?
-

Thickened placenta for sure, and retained placenta, and higher risk of dystocia. But we had 2 mares on the "other forum" who completely "bagged up" months in advance of their due dates, but had no actual milk production. Babies died in utero, and although there were udders in appearance, there was no actual milk production.
-
He's such a wonderful stallion, so sweet & well mannered. We actually want to geld him early next year, he's a wonderful riding horse & trail buddy :) thanks everyone for offering your stories and info!
-
LOVELY! Cant wait to see your foal :)
-
I remember when she lost her foal. Im very excited for you Suebe :)
Fingers crossed for the safest of arrivals ;pray
-
;pray ;pray DITTO THAT !!!!
-
Thank you Ryan me too! It's been a stressful journey of worry since that happened and I'm so happy we are finally getting close. Thank you Holly!
-
Keep us posted on her progress :)

Hi! Question please...I want to buy a foal blanket, this baby is going to be born smack in the middle of winter. What size would best suit a newborn Haflinger foal? 36,42,48? Im stumped!!!
-
Oh my! I can't even guess!
-
I honestly don't know, but do know that some foal blankets come very adjustable with Velcro straps. I can't remember what you have for minis, but if they have blankets that they don't wear, one of them might be right. If I remember, when I'm on my desktop instead of kindle, I'll get you a link or two for adjustable foal blankets.
-
You might try Deb Robison at her personal email. She raised large horses for years before getting into Falabellas and American miniatures.
She might be able to help you. I'll PM you her personal email address. She makes the blankets herself, and can probably be a good resource for your upcoming little one!

-
I agree with Chanda. I don't know the size of haffie foals, but Kate's foals could fit in a small mini horse sized blanket. Typically they were long enough but to deep, so we had to hem them and take up the Velcro straps.
-
Hi,
Congrats on the upcoming winter foal out of your lovely Haflinger. Diane said that I should contact you as I make double fleece foal blankets and she said that maybe you may want one for your little one.
If so, let me know and I can make one for you.

Hickory Springs Falabellas
-
Hi, thank you so much and yes I do need one hickory Springs, however I'm stumped on the size. Do you have a website?
-
Thank you for the link Chandra and yes I see that there are some blankets the allow for six inches of growth but I'm still wondering if I should get a 36 or a 42 inch ugh I think its most important that it fits snug for the first few months then it will already be warming up
-
Thank you Diane for emailing her for me!!! Appreciate!
-
Yes, she does. It's http://hickoryspringsfalabellas.com/
-
Hi everyone :) here we are at 284 days
-
Looking super!! Can't wait for this one.
-
Shes looking wonderful and progressing wonderfully.
Looking forward to this Sueb and I hope its a safe foaling for you :)
-
Can't wait to see this little one! Praying for a safe and uneventful foaling of a beautiful baby for you!!!
Looking great!
-
So I decided to email a Haflinger breeder and ask the average length of his newborn foals so I could purchase a proper size blanket. Please give me your opinion on what this person said...
-
Lack of knowledge, perhaps (at least in this department). Horses take longer to be able to thermoregulate than cows do when babies; so an early season foal is likely to need a blanket for at least a day or two after birth. Either they don't have early season foals or they've been lucky. My March 30 born APHA foal didn't wear a blanket that I can recall, but she was born in CO and it was mild that spring (I don't recall her ever wearing a blanket, but their stall was well bedded). [She was my first foal, so I also didn't know better, either.] Mini foals born early season, definitely need blankets for a day or two (usually mother nature equips them well, so many only need a blanket for a day or two while their body adjusts and starts to thermoregulate on it's own).
They may be correct and your foal may never need a blanket, but I don't think I'd want to be caught without one handy for an early season foal.
[As you can see, end of March, no snow.]
-
I totally agree. it is better to be "prepared" just in case....than wish you had one.
I know several people here in Florida that blanket their horses. Since I'm from the Adirondacks, we NEVER blanketed a horse, even in below zero weather. However, we also never had a foal born in the middle of winter.
The first 24 hours is a hard adjustment for babies to regulate their temperature, and I believe any help we can give them, helps keep them strong and not use up whatever reserves they have after coming through what are sometimes difficult deliveries. A deeply bedded stall with high enough sides to keep drafts away, are certainly a benefit to the health of any newborn.
I'd get one!
-
No I totally agree with you guys, he threw me off with his comment. I was kind of shocked actually by what he said. I still plan on buying a blanket, it will be most likely 38-40 degrees at night. I just wondered what you all thought of his email
-
I've had 6 mini foals born here, they were born in May, June and July; I know a couple wore a blanket their first day or for a couple nights, but I really haven't used blankets that much with mine, and it's probably because I don't have terribly early foals, too cold up here, and I need to wait to even think about foaling til after calving any way, so if I need the calving barn with all the bells and whistles it's available.
Since I've had the minis, I make sure I have blankets available for foals, but haven't used them extensively. If I remember right, it was rainy when Spotty was born, so he got a blanket at least at night for his first few nights. They also got shut in the shelter, cause she wouldn't keep him inside. Bonny got the barn stall, so I can't remember for certain if Bliss wore a blanket or not (I think she did at night, as it was chilly and wet for awhile around the time both were born); as they were in the barn, I wasn't as worried, because she couldn't get wet, I gave her a big fluffy bed and she was happy.
-
I inquired with a FB group I'm on, and we'll see if I get any good answers. I'll let you know.
-
Ok, this blanket was the first suggested:
http://www.statelinetack.com/item/kensington-all-around-foal-180g-turnout/E012968%20BLK/?srccode=GPSLT&gclid=Cj0KEQiA39_BBRD0w-_rmOrc__8BEiQA-ETxXe5wckjdMhAuPi3bUIR-1ddPx1O73WSsAtUu_aENHI0aAmfd8P8HAQ&kwid=productads-adid%5E161305738065-device%5Em-plaid%5E109131490908-sku%5E445449-adType%5EPLA
Fits a wide range of foal sizes and has Velcro closures.
-
Oooooo I like that one, I like stateline too! Thanks Chandra! This is the one I've been looking at but the sizes are killing me, I'm stumped beyond and I can't find any answers :(
-

With that one, one size pretty much fits all, so should fit at birth and for awhile after.

Oops here's the one I meant to post

I like the one you chose Chandra, only concern is I don't think it has Velcro which I like so much better on babies then hooks and straps

I think they are both a combo, the front is Velcro and the belly is the T tab closure.

YES - my normal MODUS OPERANDI of story telling w/ pics, ;D
Our first Shetland foal was born in late May in Montana but DID have problems since her first time mama wouldn't let her nurse. She spent 48 hours in a vet hospital and when she came home, still wasn't thermo-regulating. Don't know if there were mini folk then who made blankets or not - we had little catalog access then, no local tack places carried small blankets and still no internet on my parent's property 20+ years later. We used a toddler sweat shirt to keep her warm for about 2 weeks - while she lived in our house overnight and in a hunting/camping trailer during the day. 2 days after she came home, we were hit hard by a late season blizzard and she then wore two sweatshirts - one on front half one on back half and was covered by horse sized saddle blankets during the day while in the camper trailer!
In July 98, the same mare had a colt in late July that also didn't do well. He, too, wore a toddler sweat shirt during the night - they were in a pen outside and thankfully we didn't have any rain until he was older (he had a hard time for a while in the heat as well - during the day).
WE used a small arabian blanket for about a week, while in a stall, on our 1/2 arab/shetland foal in January 2000. He was born in a 3' snowbank in NC - during the afternoon while the mare was turned out. They were moved two miles up the road to the vet's boarding barn as the mare also had to be treated for a retained placenta. Believe the blanket was a Schneider's blanket.
The Shetland foal born 2 days after him, in the open but then moved inside our stall, didn't wear one as he was fine. The snow had already started melting...
and this filly was born in 2004 - right before a good snow. Here the filly is 2 days old and she's a bit wet on top, but had been stalled in our little stall. She regulated her temp fine and didn't need a blanket - we did towel dry her when she was wet on top. Then at 4 days of age, she was moved from here to our new house where again she was kept in a stall in the barn as we were battered by several storms that winter/early spring. But another pic shown of her out in the snow!

So, in my opinion, while I don't agree with blanketing most of the time (I have a whole page of thoughts on that one, LOL), I believe that it's a good thing to have a blanket on hand for new born foals and DO believe that you'd like any of the blankets posted by Chanda. In a pinch, a teenager or adult sized sweatshirt CAN work for a larger foal - if you have sewing skills, you take up the bottom with string or elastic, so it's not hanging down... :)
I have also used this one - on a Shetland foal that was born in September and then was very ill in December/January. They didn't have mini sizes then, and a friend had this in Arab size. It was too big, but we tied it up and it worked well enough!

Awww paint pony I thoroughly enjoyed your story and photos of your beauties! Precious! I ended up ordering a 42 inch, I hope I'm not off too much ugh but the 36 looked so tiny when I pulled out the measure tape, hope I didn't screw this up! If so I guess I can always order the other size as well
-
Not sure how "husky" your Hafflinger foal will be. I've seen some that needed draft sizes almost from birth and others that wore pony/normal foal sizes at first and arab/cob sizes at maturity.
and THANX - :-*
-
If possible when born could you measure height and length for us for future reference?
So excited for you!!
-
How is she coming along Sueb ?
-
Can't wait to hear...and see her!
-
Hi everyone! :) 297 days today! Can't believe it! Anticipated this since the loss last year, finally so close! Any predictions? Here's her udder today...
-
Looking good :) shes definitely progressing in the right direction.
Her udder will fill a little more and her nipples will separate further and point down.
The only thing Id like to predict, well wish for , is that its a safe arrival :)
I do think that nows the time to keep an extra eye on her. As you know her better than anyone , keep a watch out for any changes to her behavior as it could be a good indication shes getting closer.
Good luck and keep us posted as often as you can :)
-
Oh, this udder is looking just fabulous. As Ryan says, nipples will separate and point down, and her behavior is a good indicator that she's getting close!
I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!
-
Me too ;pray
-
I think she's progressing very nicely! Are you going to milk test her as she gets closer?
I am thinking she will go around 320.
-
:) :) :) thanks everyone! Holly I was kind of thinking how could she go much longer then 320 too, hoping she makes it to that. She's been laying down on her side several times over the last 2 weeks moaning really loud. I had never seen that before in any of our pregnant equines until last year I caught our donkey doing that about 3 weeks before she had her baby. Is it baby position causing it or precontractions which I suppose they get?'
-
Holly, no im not going to do a milk test, I've never done one why start now ;) ha!
-
The body beautiful :)
-
She looks great!
-
Oh, she's looking grand! Yes, I'm sure she's doing everything she can to start moving that baby into position, as she needs to get him/her lined up for delivery. Plus, sometimes they are just downright uncomfortable in these last few weeks. Poor mommas!
Just keep up updated as we are all so excited!!
-
Full speed ahead, she needs to calm down ;)
-
Will she make it to 320?! Her udder is spreading like a wild fire! 301 days today
-
In one picture it appears the nipples still have room to fill, and then in the other it seems they're pretty full. I think you've got a little time, but not too much! She's moving ahead like lightning!
How about a side picture and then one from the back so we can see how this little one is riding! That might help give us some better ideas~! But what a beautiful udder!
-
Shes making good progression and definitely been to the milk bar since the last udder pic you posted but she still has some filling to do yet.
Will she make it to #320 ? I have my fingers crossed that she does :)
Just keep a really close eye on her now seeing that she lost last years foal.
Stock up on coffee and toothpicks ;pray
-
Appreciate the knowledge so much! Thank you! Her nipples are more then halfway full, and Ryan she lost a baby last year at 117 DAYS to an under developed umbilical cord, but about 5 years ago before we got her she had a successful easy pregnancy and a beautiful filly. She's been on Regumate since 28 days, 10 cc a day as a precaution only. Never any evidence she needed it but my vet could see I was worried and agreed it does no harm to have her on it. Apparently since the baby induces labor she says to keep her on it until she foals. Thanks for the good thoughts, I really want to see her at least hit 320 days! Here's a few photos
-
Here's maybe a better pic
-
She's looking great, but if she is moving that fast then in another few days you are going to have to think about 'camping out' with her overnight. Good luck!!
-
I totally agree, my dear friend, as that baby is certainly almost front of center and looks quite dropped in that first picture.
Time to start camping out! Is her personality showing any changes? I would start spending the nights with her very soon -- it's worth being a bit tired to help get this little one safely to the ground!
I'm so excited for you! She's looking just fabulous!
-
Ditto what everyone is saying. She looks to be gearing up. I can see that udder getting MUCH fuller before she foals, Though quite impressive so far!
And a word of encouragement, Kate my Welsh mare, foaled at 311 the first time, fully developed healthy filly.
-
Agree with everyones comments in regards to Camping out.
Anna I remember your Camping in the barn Photos , playing cards and waiting for the big arrivals :)
Sending best wishes for the safest of arrivals Sueb :)
-
OMG wow! :) Holly thanks! Good to hear, 311 days and perfect yay I needed that lol. Maybe she'll surprise us and drag it on hahaha! ;)she's even more full today and her udder doesn't shrink and fill like my others have done in the past, it just keeps getting bigger! Thank you so much all of you for all the help and advise, appreciate beyond words!
-
If her udder isnt going up and down , then I dont think you will be waiting much longer ....
Very excited for you ;pray
-
Sounds like she is making good progress!
Very excited for you!
-
Here's the newest photos! Weirdly Ryan she has never gone up and down with udder size, just a slow steady up hmmmm
-
The excitement is killing me! I wish you milk tested so we would know where she is at!!
-
She is doing wonderfully. From the first picture I'd say she still has a bit more to go, in getting those nipples a bit more separated and pointing straight down! Her elongation looks fabulous and with her vulva peeking open, you'd better set up the card table, put on the coffee and find a deck of cards -- and a partner to play with, if you can get one! LOL
-
Ditto the above.
If im not around Sueb, best wishes for the safest of arrivals
;pray
-
Christmas baby?? :D
-
How many days is she now Suebe?
-
Oh my Diane I didn't even notice the peeping vulva! Ugh lol! Thank you Ryan have a wonderful holiday! Haha I guess we could have a xmas baby the way it's looking but technically she's only 305 days today Holly. I have her barn stall on a camera but it gets so black out in the barn when it's closed at night that I would need to start leaving the light on all night, that way I could watch her from my iphone. Do you think the light will be disturbing and stress her out because I feel like I might have to start doing it in like a week or so by how fast she's moving along.

I've known of people to use those rope lights to give a warm glow to their barn stall, so they could see some in the foaling stall with less disturbance. I'll see if I can find a link.

I have a low watt bulb in my stall, mine is a 38. Dim enough but also light enough to see well. For night foaling. I use the camera program to tighten the picture so my barn looks lighter on camera than it really is.
My stall is a 12 x 12 and camera & light at 11 ft high. Hope that helps!

I'd either leave on a light, or run some white Christmas lights in the barn so you can see at night. The light won't bother her, but I'd be watching her very closely or sleeping in the barn if it were me. At 305 days she'll do just fine when she decides it's time. And a Christmas baby sounds delightful Anna!!
-
These are great ideas thank you! I'll look into these lights immediately. Our barn overhead lights are huge and bright like daylight, so probably annoying to leave on for sure! Here's a few pics I just took. I decided it's best to lock her in her barn stall at night now. It's a nice size 32x16. I don't trust her. She likes to be outside at night and it's in the 30's right now.
-
Not much "lopsidedness" going on now. Hmmmm
-
the baby seems to be staying like that the last two days. I suppose she'll wax prior since she's had a baby before?! Is that the most reliable sign of closeness to foaling?
-
IS PANDORA WAXING?! If so does that always mean 24-48 hours
-
Doesn't look quite like waxing yet. Typically you will see more of a colostrum build up with wax. However her teats are looking fuller. A picture from further away from under her belly looking up at udder will be helpful, if you can get it.
I am going to see if I can post a picture of waxing to help...
Ok first pic is of Kate waxing, very slight waxing, foaled 3 days later, with no wax built up, and the second picture is hours before she foaled.
N
Last picture is of typical waxing.
Hope this helps.
If you give a slight squeeze and pull down a tiny bit you may be able to express some milk. That would help you determine if it's turned to colostrum yet. If it's thin, oily and not sticky to semi sticky, and clear to slightly white, not usually colostrum. But if it's thick ish very sticky yellow to white and not see through that means colostrum is in or coming in.
Most mares will develop colostrum in 24-48 before foaling. Some don't and some have colostrum for days!
I am excited for you and look forward to your updates!!
-
Thank you Holly :) appreciate all the info also what you commented back on your thread, I'm going to jump right in and make sure that baby is warm! Didn't realize yours is also due pretty soon ^-^
-
Your very welcome!
Yes Precious is due soon, but I dont have a breeding date so I can only guess when she might be due. She is making changes so I can only watch and wait and hope that I can read her well enough to be there. I know they were put in the same pen full time March 3rd 2016, But have been on the same property before that, Not knowing if in the same pasture or not, so honestly no clue when she is due.
Hopefully your mare will also give you clear signs so you can be there too!
-
She has those indents on each side of her tail head today...yes?!
-
She is definitely filling each day and looks like she is starting to relax in her behind, all perfect indications that things are getting exciting for you.
;pray
-
That's great news!!
-
So do you all think I still have a little time???! Would you keep a close eye and not go far from home? Wondering if I should take it serious now or I probably have time because she's not quite ready yet? Or is she?! UGH!
-
Yeah It wouldn't hurt to be watching her closely at this stage.
As she is presenting you/us with signs that she is getting closer , I think its time :)
Good Luck SueB , Ill be thinking and praying that all goes well in case I miss the big announcement :)
-
All pretty positive signs that things are moving forward. Is baby lined up? Pictures please from behind and a full side.
-
Better safe than sorry! If you have the ability to stay and watch her it wouldnt hurt to do so.
Yes please updated pictures of udder, vulva, and side view :)
-
Here they are, how are we looking today at 309 days
-
Oops doubled a pic! Here's the last one

Oooooooooooh shes looking very well! Vulva elongated, boobies almost pointing down. Her belly is dropping and foals not sideways , but still back but coming close to the mid. When it gets to be more along the mid line then you are on constant watch! (but you really are already im sure!) it wont be too long now. within a week or so by my guess.
Ill vote an xmas baby!
-
Ditto! I think your going to see a big change in her udder when her colostrum comes in. Her vulva is looking very close!
-
I also agree your on the "Home straight" so to speak :)
-
I wouldn't be taking my eyes off her from now on - and dont forget that they can decide to foal during the daytime too!! Good luck. ;D
-
VERY exciting!! And if you're lucky, she will foal in the daylight! I never had much luck in that department, mine just seems to like the darkness. LOL
Praying for a safe and uneventful delivery of a healthy little one!! And I can't wait!! ;pray ;pray ;pray
-
I keep looking at her , she just looks so sweet!
-
Oh my gosh so soon! Wow thanks everyone so much! I'm really excited this is literally our first standard size horse foal and yes Holly she's the sweetest girl, best manners and disposition ever. My daughters favorite show horse. She shows her in hunters & jumpers 3'6. I can't thank you all enough for the support and always good information you all offer <3
-
OK WAXING???????!
-
That is suspiciously more like wax! Tell you what, ( this will help us better) pull off the wax, and get a good feel for it, see if its sticky. ( and gosh darn it squeeze the teat and see whats in there!!!! LOL) I see what very much could be wax on the bottom teat in pic. I am anxious to know!!
Can you get an entire pic of her udder from that angle but further out?, also updated pics of her vulva, also note the color of the inside of her vulva if its dark red/ purpleish and spongy to feel shes close!!
-
I agree that it does look alot more like wax.
And as Anna mentioned , I wouldnt be taking my eyes off her either :)
Cant wait to see the news of the arrival of this little one and Im sending my best wishes it all happens safely ;pray
-
Hahahaha Holly! Is there any truth behind breaking the seal and possibly losing colostrum? She's acting a little funny today but yes I'm not even going to leave the house at all, with my luck I'll miss something.
-
Yea she looking very good!! As for breaking the seal, loosing colostrum, no, because wax is fluid leaking because of pressure, or contractions, etc. When you milk test, or take a sample to analyse the milk, your not pulling enough out to cause a problem. Most mares continue to produce colostrum for 6-12 hours after foaling. It slowly turns over to milk.
A lot of mares wax, leak drip or stream prior to foaling and still have plenty for foal. Now if the mare had been streaming for several days prior to foaling, there is a test that can be done to be sure. Called IGG. I know a lot of breeders who do the test on every foal as a precaution. There is also a product on the market called seramune, that's given at birth to be sure foal is protected. It's expensive but well worth keeping on had if needed.
I think your mare is looking great, fingers crossed for a safe foaling!!
-
I did the IGG test on any foal that I had concerns about. But I did milk test using the "Foal Time" strips which I think are now called the "Maybe Baby" strips sold by Mare Stare. They only take 1 drop of milk, so no large quantity or interruption of baby's colostrum.
Getting very excited for you!!
-
There's more and it looks like something was dripping. She's been eating literally non stop
For 2 days
-
Building up her calories! It takes a lot out of them when they are trying to maintain their own weight and feed baby!
All looking good!
-
I can imagine Diane ^-^ would waxing necessarily mean 24-48 hours? I've never actually had a mare wax. All our past births were maidens, we never bred them again and they never waxed
-
I'm so nervous my vet thinks it's a bit early and is hoping she's waxing up a few weeks early ugh! They tend to be more "book smart" and don't see things outside the box ya know ?!
-
I would bet on that being wax. I would keep all eyes on her now.
I've had mares wax for almost a week. So it could be any time to ?. She may even stop waxing and hang on for a bit. Best wishes for a safe foaling!! So

Hi everyone it's 11:30 almost midnight in SoCal. Came out to check on Pandora, she has an entirely different attitude, very cranky very unlike her, she's literally a doll all the time. I got a super quick pic of her vulva just hours after the last one I sent you and it looks so different. Very flat if that makes sense, sorry the pic is si bad!
-
Oh my!! Looks much more relaxed!!
-
Yes, much more relaxed, and that change of attitude is important to note. Even the little "peeking" of the inside of the vulva.
Keep your "eagle eyes" on her. We'll hope for a few more days for you, but I'm not sure we can win that bet! But, we know that these ladies plan to confuse us!
-
Have you got an 'indoor viewer' that you are sitting by so she can be watched all the time? I'm a bit worried by your saying that you 'went out to check on her'. How often do you check? Every 20 minutes is not often enough which is why most of us take up 'residence' outside with our girls. Even a quick dash to the loo or to grab a cuppa can mean that there will be a foal there (without any pre-labour signs) on ones return. One year I got up from my 'barn chair' and wandered down the foaling barn to give everyone their midnight hay snack. The first mare tucked into her hay as did most of the others, but two of them didn't bother - they want wtching I thought. Walked back down the barn (50feet in length) and the first mare had a new baby beside her and was laying there still with a mouthful of her hay. Checked her only to hear 'noises' from back up the barn, non eating mare was pushing baby out, finished helping her and more noises heard. Back to other non eating mare who was rolling about, red bag, phew all ok with a little help. Got my breath back and glanced at my watch - three babies in 18 minutes - good job I wasn't trying the check every 20 minutes rota!! LOL!!
Not having a go at anyone, just offering some friendly advice and proof about how fast things can happen. :)
-
Diane I'm trying so hard to stay awake with short naps on my phone alarm. Anna haha! That's quite a story LOL! I totally understand and I missed our donkeys birth, walked inside the house came out one hour later she was licking a baby that was already standing up Lol! This time I have a camera, shows her entire barn stall, it's on all the time I'm looking at it but I keep dozing off. I walked out to check on her because she'd been standing in that same corner so long and making faces literally.
-
Suebe, is there anyway you can get your stream online? there are free ones and U Stream is very simple. That way we can help you, and call if we see something. I can do my best to try to help you get online today.
-
Thank you, How do I do that?
-
Sent you a pm
-
This is the link to U Stream, http://www.ustream.tv/ Setting up with them for free is easy, It will be helping you get your barn cam connected to your computer, which I may be able to help you do. Let me know if I can help!
-
I'm in agreement with Anna. I had something similar happen while walking down the aisle of my barn. Attended the birth of 3 little ones, one right after the other, then took a short walk down the aisle and found I had "missed" one that didn't get out of the sack. And this little momma wasn't due for a couple of weeks, and I never even guessed that baby would come that night.
The ladies are tricky!! I didn't have anyone to share my watch with, so I used to just sleep in the barn during delivery season -- and with the maidens, I slept in their stalls overnight.
We're praying for a perfect delivery for you!!
-
I hope Suebe was able to get some rest today!
-
Oh my gosh Diane that's such a sad story :( I never understood why the instincts of the mother wouldn't tell her to bite that bag open, seems like nature would have made it that way. Pandora is laying down moaning right now like she's done several times over the past few days. I've been a bit preoccupied two kids with the stomach flu puking and of course watching Pandora. I clicked on the link for the live stream but I don't understand how I can attach the cam. It's one of a dozen cameras that watch our property and home so it's an entire system. Not sure I can put up just that one
-
So sorry the kids are sick. Praying for their speedy recovery.
Sounds like the momma is uncomfortable, which we would expect at this point. I'm praying for an easy and uneventful delivery of a healthy little one, and can't wait to see it!
-
Sorry kiddos are under the weather. Hope they get feeling better soon.
If you get a chance update with pictures.
-
O, no, so sorry the kiddos are sick with that! Terrible timing, but know how that goes.
Pandora - I pray for you to go a little longer, girl, and safely deliver a healthy little one after the holidays for your family!!
Take care Suebe.
-
Hi everyone, thank you. We've had 48 hours of rain storm, last night my surveillance cameras stopped working on my phone, it said "Cloud ID offline" I ran to the barn, we have an apartment type room we built in it, like a lounge area, we also keep our entire surveillance equipment in there and you can watch every camera on the computer screen in there as well. We couldn't get it working on our mobile again, still trying so to complicate life more I sat in that room all night because I was afraid she would have the baby and I'd have no way of watching her in the house. Here's a couple pics I took to give you an idea but now until we can figure out the problem I'm basically stuck on this room or standing in the barn staring at her ugh
:-[
-
Why is it when the mares get close that all electronics go on the blink?! Must be murphys law!
You didnt mention any changes in Pandora, so I wanted to ask if there is any changes?
Hopefully you can get the electronics fixed, if not at least you have a room down there. I would have to put up a cot in the stall!
-
Hope you can get your system up and running again, why do these things happen just at the wrong time! This lady needs to get on with her foaling if only to give you a break and some well earned snooze time. Sorry to hear about the kiddies - we've just had the chicken pox here with youngest g/son.
Wishing you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. :)
-
Hi everyone hope you all are having a wonderful holiday :) chicken pox oh no. That's no fun and so itchy! Poor kiddies! it's been crazy here, feel a bit overwhelmed and to top it off my turkey girls (pets) got out two nights ago and I haven't found them, I'm sure the coyotes got them :( had them for years. So sad! Holly thanks for asking I took some new pics today, her vulva looked a tiny slimy (clear)at the opening so I'm guessing she's about to lose that plug! Got the Internet in our barn fixed . I became a ninja haha and went on a mission resetting and messing with the entire system and got it working, miracle lol! The company said they couldn't come out until next Wednesday and my husband is out of town until tomorrow. Here's some pics, Pandora was so hapoy to get out of the barn today, finally no rain and a bit of sun. Have an amazing Christmas!
-
She's looking great! Hope she holds on a bit longer for you!
-
Wow looking VERY close, i missed the xmas baby boat though so my new prediction is 29th!
-
She's looking fabulous too, and I'm so excited to see these early little ones come safely to the ground!!!!
So glad you were a ninja and got everything working again! YAHOO YOU!!
-
Hi Suebe, any new changes in Pandora?
-
Good morning, Pandora and Suebe! How are y'all getting along on this....the seems to be a "read the book" type mare thread? LOL
Is she progressing, or in a holding pattern? Have you had to do any other Ninja antics? Everything well?
-
Hi everyone <3 still waiting and happy about that because we're at 317 days!!! Love that "full term number" 320 lol wanted to at least make it there :) she's pretty miserable now, lays down moans & groans a lot! Here's a few pics I just took. Hope all is well with everyone xo
-
I wouldn't think much longer now. Nipples a little fuller and a little more pointing down, and she looks pretty good to go. Baby may move a bit more forward of center, but she's moving ahead like clockwork!
-
So glad she has held on this far! Can't wait now to see her wee one!!
-
In addition to what others said, I see the "inward looking eye" on her now. Surely it won't be much longer...maybe within 48 hours.
-
In addition to what others said, I see the "inward looking eye" on her now. Surely it won't be much longer...maybe within 48 hours.
Thank you for responding :) what exactly is an inward eye lol "feeling stupid" haha!
-
Also noticed she has cut wayyyyyy back on feed and hay the last two days, before that she was eating nonstop! Does this have any meaning behind it???!
-
She's just getting full of foal so there is less room for food. I don't know how close to foaling this happens, and it doesn't happen to all.
-
Agree with Chanda on that one. Some of ours have days when they don't finish their feed and others when they keep their heads in the feed buckets.
Isn't foal watch fun???
********************
In 2001, we had one mare come out of the pasture to her eating area to eat her feed, leave & find a thicket and drop her foal, then come back and work on finishing eating her feed while we dealt w/ the thicket and getting the foal out. That was our Arab mare's 3rd foal. I will have to re-scan a photo (print out on paper) showing him in the thicket... before we moved him. The actual foaling didn't take long - I was in the barn setting up individual feed buckets for the evening feed and of course missed the actual foaling (I had just delivered 2 foals up at the boarding barn that weren't ours, but missed our own while I was literally "right there". Also goes to show just how fast a foaling can go). Chaunter's feed pan was right outside the door of the barn and I missed her leaving - knew something was "up" when I saw her trot back up to her feed pan and went looking. She did follow our daughters and I back to her baby - the ponies on the other side of the fence that were done eating & already turned back out, were standing right there looking over at the baby. Compared to our Shetlands, he was HUGE (he wasn't actually all that big for a purebred Arab) & all legs. Getting him up and out was a very painful experience - I ripped my flannel shirt and skin, too, in several places. I don't think I've told this story on this forum before...
In 2011, I had Koalah up in the "stalls" under our carport. We knew we were close. I also badly needed to clean out those stalls (dog kennel separated into two stalls) - they were very wet from water that had flowed into the carport while getting too much heavy rain for several days before. She didn't appear to be going to foal RIGHT then, so I lead her up to the barn and tied her in her "old" (previously normal) spot while I was portioning out feed. I fed the barn ponies first (they were all tied at their buckets) and I believe I stood and watched Koalah for a while. Didn't seem like anything going on. Her vulva was big and loose, she had milk (didn't have milk tester yet, sooo...) but not waxing or dripping. She had started to "drop off" around her tail head but thinking back - she doesn't ever get real loose there until "after" foaling (probably loosens as she's foaling - like some women don't have fully open cervix until baby is pressed right up against it). She was still wide. So I set up the next group of pony's feeds and took them outside to feed. Came back in, checked - still OK. Went down to the kennel/stalls and started cleaning, took first load out to the bonfire/burn pile, back to finish cleaning - then heard water running and wondered if I'd left the spigot in the barn on, then a loud-ish plop and I took off running. It didn't even look like she'd taken her head out of her bucket - she foaled standing up. I did not finish cleaning out the stall - got towels, tied up the placenta, unhooked Koalah's tie, gathered up the still wet filly & Koalah followed me down to the stall. Then she and I helped dry the filly together and she was colicy and kept laying down while working on passing the placenta... We dumped shredded paper and wood shavings down on top of the dirty stall - I'd clean it more later.
Yes, I've told this story before. But it's such a surprise and such a cool story.

This is a pic of Koalah tied in the barn (different spot) in 2014. She IS in foal here, but just barely. She was bred in July (accidental exposure - one cover) and foaled on 5 June 2015.

Great pictures, and I just LOVE the stories!!!
-
Yes! Love the stories they are quite amazing HAHAHAHAHA! Beautiful pony and her foal! Does anyone know what "Silver City" meant by "inward eye" I'm so curious :)
-
Btw Pandora is acting very strange today. She loves going out in her pasture during the day, I pretty much have to drag her in the barn stall at night just to be safe but today she's refusing to go out and is kicking for belly a lot and does have a more loose manure. Her body shape also looks odd, rear more pointed and she looks long ( I know strange but...lol) and her back more swayed then before. Do these things stick out as a good possibility that we may finally see this baby today

While I don't know how quickly she'll get there, but it does sound like she's in the home stretch, I'd keep a close eye on her.
-
I agree with Chanda, mine usually get where they want to stay stalled as they get close. That combined with pointy Look means her backside is relaxing more!! Go Pandora!!
-
By the way... New pics!!
-
Hi Suebe, just a quick check in to explain my "inward looking eye" comment.
It isn't easy to explain as it's an expression in the eye. I haven't foaled out enough mares to know if all mares do it, though all our Arabians did. Additionally, I'm unfamiliar with your mare.
What I noticed in your last photo was a certain dreamy, unfocused look. A kind of pensive, preoccupation. As if you went to someone with that same far-off gaze to ask "penny for your thoughts?" In some, they may startle easily while others are grouchy when you disturb them. They seem to be concentrating on an inward assessment of themselves, distracted but not in distress (that comes during actual labor LOL.) It's a certain dreaminess. *shrug* Like I said, difficult to explain.
So, there's an uneducated teacher's lesson in mysticism for today.
-
ALL are signs she's in the home stretch! Be an eagle eye today and until that little one arrives!!
-
Eeeee it's gonna be very very very soon!!!
-
OOOOO - are we in the homestretch???
GOOO Pandora!! We are waiting on you.
-
Hi <3 Pandora had such a bad night (me too no sleep) foal watch kind of sucks so exhausted. Anyway, she paced a lot all night and peed a flood so I went out early and cleaned gave her new bedding. She's miserable and her rear is jelly pretty much....but yet it all drags on lol but hey we made it to 320 days today!!!
-
Yay for 320!! Sound like she is miserable and thats awesome!! Maybe she will ring in the new year with a new foal for you!!
-
Holly yep that "magic number" gives me a little comfort lol she doesn't seem to get a break from the misery now, there's no down time for her it seems, this has to be ending soon poor girl! Hope your precious gives you some strong clues soon, the guessing game can be exhausting xxx
-
I'm watching her on the camera pretty steadily from last night until right now. She'll take a bite of food walk away stand in the corner, cringe, kick her belly, ears back tail up, look completely miserable, pace the stall, take another bite and it starts all over again, between peeing and loose manure put not cow pie. How long can this go on?!!! Silver City I totally get what you're saying, very interesting :))
-
Wow!! Can you post a new udder pic? Please close but show entire udder. Sounds like might be first stages of labor!
-
She needs to hold on 9 more hours (well 9 hours Mountain time), so she can be the first of 2017, rather than the last of 2016 (and be 1 year old tomorrow). Can't wait to see this little treasure.
-
Chandra HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I couldn't agree more!!!
Holly I'm running out for that udder pic now, by the way the only thing Pandora is not doing much or at all is rolling, is that strange?!
-
Here's her udder as of 3:20 Pacific time! Eight hours forty minutes until the new year, will she make it ???
-
Ive had some roll some not. My good friends mare did the exact same thing your describing for about 3 days before she foaled.... I will be peeking in on and off all night to check for updates!!
-
Well yay for you you've made it to the new year so your Newborn foal is not a yearling haha!
-
Don't see a new baby be-bopping around the stall, so she made it!!!
Looking good just standing quietly. Happy New Year little momma!!
-
Happy New Year Suebe and Pandora!!
I think I'm a dork.....I can't find a link to your cam. Am I confusing you with Holly and Precious? (Even though I just checked on Precious.)
Looks like we'll do more waiting to see who gets the first 2017 baby here!
-
I'm confused too hahaha I never hooked my cam up to anything, I didn't know how... happy new year everyone!!!
-
Here's pics from today! Yay we made it to 2017! Hope everyone has a healthy & happy new year <3
-
She is looking great!!
I predict that her udder is going to go BOOM one last time before she foals.....
I hope it does so you KNOW it's on!
-
Like "boom" soon hahahahaha! Or could this drag on for weeks. She has long candle stick wax on and off, it breaks off then is back again. I'm so exhausted, I know you all can relate but I'm wondering if I need to be this on top of things all night. Any new predictions on time frame lol sorry haha :)))))
-
Yes you need to be on top of it, I know how hard it is! Wish I could help you watch, I understand needing to nap. Honestly she could foal with that udder looking just like it is!
-
Oh crap lol ;) ok then who needs sleep! It's so overrated HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
-
Lol!!!
-
And it looks like that baby has finally lined up -- as she looks definitely slimmer from the back!
Hang in there! We all wish we could help you watch, but it sure looks like she's ready to go any time she decides!!!
-
Oooooo yay thank you Diane!!! Hey Holly do you think this is a slight "boom" or my imagination, be honest lol I can take it ugh haha
-
Oops forgot to upload the pics hahaha pregnancy brain kinda...for Pandora ;)))
-
It looks like her udder has squared off a bit. I think it will do more, ( just because she has had this udder so long with out foaling) But I could be wrong too... Let me show you a pic of Kate when she goes BOOM. She always foals after the BOOM, and your mares udder reminds me so much of hers. ( course each mare is different!) And its possible Pandora will foal on the udder she has!
First is Kates in the almost ready( teats still touching, like Pandoras) ,second is the BOOM Teats separated.
-
Suebe, are you and Pandora okay??? Winter hasn't hit you a good hard wallop in the last couple of days has it?
Without an update, I get to imagining.....did Pandora go into a holding pattern? Is she trying to let Precious catch up so that she doesn't have to foal alone? Doe's she just want to drive poor Suebe UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY MAD????!! LOL
-
Yes anxiously waiting for update!!
-
Hahahahaha Silver City all of the above! ;)) Pandora is driving me freaking crazy! Holly thank you so much, good example pics I get it :)) still waiting this is nuts! She has the same false labor every night ALL NIGHT! Moan, groan, kick belly, stretch, lay down get up, never turns into anything more, what's up ugh!!!!!
-
They just LOVE to keep us guessing!
-
Hahaha the night you say to hell with this I'm going to sleep for an hour she will foal!
-
Rocklone totally agree!!! That's always how it works Hahahaha! Was up all night again but this morning there's about 6 cow pie manure piles and her wax is very yellow and there's a tiny bit of fluid leaking from the bottom of her vulva, don't think it's urine the way it's leaking down?! so maybe ......... ugh lol
-
LOL!! The last Month of a mares pregnancy is the longest month EVER! She cant hold on much longer!!
-
That sound like a very exciting update. Praying for a safe and uneventful foaling for you, and can't wait for the announcement AND PICTURES!!!!
-
Thank you Diane <3 she really does look to be in the first stage of labor...all day lol but I do believe she has a very faint bag leak. Barely but continually leaking. I honestly think this should all finally be over tonight but I will never say never hahahaha ;))
-
Hope she has a safe foaling!! And hope it's tonight!!
-
So is there a new foal?
-
THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE <3 you all made this experience even better xoxo SHES HERE!!!!
-
Congrats! That last picture is priceless.
-
Beautiful pictures, beautiful filly and beautiful Pandora!! Congratulations to you, and thank you Lord for an uneventful birth.
Was she born after midnight? If so, what a nifty present for All Kings Day! And what an equally fine gift.....peace, sleep, BLESSED REPOSE! LOL
Enjoy your new baby, and after some sleep you can let us know what the family (two legged and four) think of the new addition.
-
One of the other things that can cause early udder development is fescue grass?
P.S.......if she WAS born after midnight, no coincidence, only a wonderful example of how prayers work.
-
Oh, she is fabulous!!! Thank you Lord for a safe delivery and such a BEAUTY!!!
Those pictures are just beautiful, and what a priceless picture that last one is!!
